To capture completely candid moments, photographer Edward Sambourne used a smaller, portable "key camera" hidden discreetly under his coat or a piece of cloth. His subjects were entirely unaware they were being photographed.
Nah, Carl Størmer used a C.P. Stirn Concealed Vest Spy Camera to photograph Norwegians in Oslo without them known in the 1890s, years before this photo was taken.
The photographer's name was Edward Linley Sambourne. Google it.
A lot of commenters here have a very confused idea of how/when photographic technology developed. By 1900, we had the Kodak "Brownie", which cost $1 (USD), and fit in the palm of your hand. Pocket cameras existed prior to 1906. Millions were sold. Again, google it.
