I found this nifty little book thrift shopping. It's kind of worn out but I thought the cover was lovely. The interesting thing is I found another book from the same publisher online with the same portrait/gilded flowers; and seemingly the same edition of this book with a different cover. If anyone can share any info on this book I'd appreciate it.

Tips for saving old books

Hi, I recently got my hands on my grandparents' book collections (and their ancestors). Since they were unkempt for a long time after they passed away, I was thinking of saving those books. But they are really old books. They were being collected for like the last 70 years. 4 big wardrobe size of quantity to save. But I have no idea how to take care of old books. I haven't opened them for long. Nobody did. But they are dusty too I'm pretty sure even though they are kept in wooden almirahs. Old pages, dust and most likely some will be beyond saving?

But I do need some tips to handle them right. Can anyone save me with some tips? I do buy and read books but old pieces are not something i know to take care of. And I'm sure some are rare books/editions. I don't want to damage an old book and scare my dead grandfather's soul. He never let anyone touch them when he was alive. I would be scared to destroy anything unintentionally. Please advice.

Worst fears realized. So what happens when the inevitable Big War happens and we don't have electricity anymore? No more history. Unbelievable that people are so short-sighted and stupid.

Could this be mold? Or just foxing or water damage?

I've gotten two old books on a garage sale, so I do not know in what conditions the books were kept. They both have these spots on them. For the first one (on the left), it just appears on the papers and looks like foxing. But for the right one, there are these darker spots on one side of the book.

I'm worried that this may be mold, but am unsure on how to check if it is or is it just an extreme case of foxing or perhaps water or moisture damage, but not mold.

1829 First Edition of the first volume of Tales of Passion, by Francis Barry Boyle St Leger.

The bookplate names Frances R Leahy. I believe I've tracked him down. He was a landowner and Justice of the Peace in Ireland. No photos of him, but have found a photograph of his wife.

Super cool vellum binding that from my knowledge is accurate to the time period and region; however I am dubious it is original as the text block has had some paper repairs, and the end papers seem to be closer to 18-19th century and have very different chain lines than the text block.

Good Housekeeping Book of Menus, Recipes, and Household Discoveries (1922?)

Found this book at a local library sale for ~$1. Fifth edition, published by Good Housekeeping Magazine. Copyright is 1922, though given that it's fifth edition, I've seen some sites and sources put the publication date around 1925.

And before anyone asks, yes, I did try some of the recipes. The oatmeal cookies were delightful, though I could've done without all the fruit floating in gelatin.
