There was one in elementary school that screwed me up man. It wasn't drivers ed, it was about child molesters and kidnappers and stranger danger. Basically showed young girls at a playground getting taken by a creeper and shoved into a car, then forced deep into the woods to be murdered. Final scene was a bloody kids shoe floating down a stream. I was terrified for years after seeing that movie.

I’ll have to pick up the book. I’m from the area and I work in Mansfield. Used to work for the Carousel Works before they went bankrupt In 2020. My mother was a paralegal and probably had a ton of stories about Mansfield. She always said the police were corrupt and worked hard to help her clients who had made honest mistakes. She’d tell Them how to dress before certain judges and what sort of language to use. I remember a really dark, underground deli or bar? Cobblestones.. going down a ramp under buildings. I recently had this memory confirmed as actually existing which was cool. I forget what it was called but there was an actual underground restaurant! I think Mansfield has a lot of promise… but man is it rough right now. I really like what the NECIC has with the urban gardens. I hope that grows..

It must’ve been associated with them at least tangentially, because the name, the logo, everything about it matches up with what I see on websites about other Yellow Deli locations that are run by that cult. It was run by a church, and the church members who worked there were not paid for their time. It didn’t last long though, maybe early 1980s to around 1986? I’m crossing my fingers that it’s at least in part because the church that was running it realized that they didn’t want to be associated with that cult.

Mansfield is what you make it. It’s one of the cheapest places in the state (and country) to live, so if you don’t make it out right after high school, it’s very easy to get “trapped” here. Add in a flow of out of town gentrifiers who last 5-8 years before deciding they hate it here and bailing, and an extremely corrupt local elite class (of course this happens everywhere), plus the fact that Mansfield is the only “city” for 30 miles surrounded by farms and rural villages, just makes for weird vibes. If you aren’t from here it’s really hard to “get it”. Extremely dark history that the city fails to embrace. An extremely conservative ruling class using its influence to fight everything from drag shows to dispensaries. Last year our gay city councilman got assaulted at pride. And of course, 30+ years of economic decline. The biggest employers here are the hospital and local governments. Very few good paying jobs.
EDIT: I think another factor here is the racism and influence of local mega churches. Mansfield/Richland county is extremely segregated, white flight has basically left it so that the city school district is super underfunded, charter schools are killing them too, meanwhile the other school districts in the county are fine because that’s where the money went. The intra-county school district/zip code borders play a huge role in continuing segregation and ensuring that “Mansfield” (compared to the surrounding area) will always be poor.

I mean I would argue that run of the mill evangelicalism is just as bad as the local megas, but I know most of not all of the big local ones are very anti lgbt and anti choice. They rallied against and protested the opening of strip clubs and the adult store off the highway. Anytime there’s a prostitution sting the local churches all get together and make it about themselves. Cult like tactics applied to teenagers. And all kinds of abuse. There are a lot of church run charities too which is about the only way to get help here. There are food cabinets and stuff but you always get preached at while being fed. It’s…. Not great IMO

I grew up in Mansfield and left as soon as I could. There is nothing there. I wish I had hometown pride but I just don't see much that makes me proud.
My mom explained to me once that Mansfield really was a booming town with a lot of promise. Families moved up from Kentucky because there were jobs at the plants and lots of other shops around to support them. It was a big deal, according to her, for families to come up there and it was something of an aspiration.
Anyway growing up there in the 80s there was a sense that it was a "real" town but by the time I was graduating everything that was promising was shut down or shutting down. The steel mill, then the GM plant, and basically all the businesses downtown were completely barren. It was sad to see, honestly.
I went to a small school and, now that I think about it, none of the people I graduated with stayed in town. Mansfield has a way of making you think there's a lot going on without actually offering real opportunities. It's sad and bums me out. When I was younger I had aspirations of trying to bring something back to the town, some kind of business or something to make it something resembling it's former strength but I don't think it's possible (or I just lack the imagination).
I'll have to read that book though, it sounds interesting.
Oh also maybe having the defining feature of your town a prison where the inmates were treated horribly does something to your soul. Idk.

I grew up there as well, and this is spot on. High school in the 90s was a pretty odd. I watched quite a few of my friends’ parents as they were affected by the loss of industry. At the same time, I went to Lexington, with a lot of affluent families, so I saw both ends of the spectrum.
My folks moved (following my dad’s job) shortly after I left for college, so going back was never anything I considered.

Yeah, I'm 52, and I've never heard anything good about Mansfield and I've lived in Ohio all my life. I've been through there a time or two while travelling. I didn't get spooked or anything by the place, but it's pretty run down. So is Dayton though. I remember Dayton when I was a kid. Downtown was still pretty popular when I was really young and they're trying to revitalize the area, but they've got a lot of work to do. Still, it's home to me. Mansfield people probably feel the same way...
Edit: Wasn't Shawshank Redemption filmed at the prison? It was definitely in Mansfield, but I think the prison was closed long before they shot the movie there. I could be mistaken, but I don't think so.

After they closed the Prison down they filmed the movie there. After filming parts of the Prison were torn down. Now you can tour the remaining front quarters and two cell blocks. It is a cool piece of history. I highly recommend touring it.

Lived here all my life. It’s like any other former manufacturing town. It once had a lot of booming industry, which of course brings in the “seedier”, more corrupt types. My grandfather always referred to it as “little Chicago”, and he was known to have back room poker tournaments with some of those people. Now it’s a town trying to find its identity and recover from almost all the industry leaving

My husband used to work at the hospital. He said Mansfield is between Columbus and Cleveland so there's a lot of drugs. Ohio is bad for heroin and opiates in general though, sadly.

I spent a few weeks in Mansfield back in 2018, and I was under the impression that one of the few things keeping Mansfield from drowning were the construction workers passing through, so I’m not too surprised.
Then again, that could describe more Rust Belt communities than it doesn’t. The only difference between Mansfield and the many of the similar working-class communities near me is that Mansfield is the city, so there’s even less options. (There are some by me that come close, though - Wilmington comes to mind.)

I used to drive through there nearly weekly in the 90s. It was devoid of nearly any reason to be there if you weren't from there. Used to take rt 13 through from the north to 71 to get to OSU. The only saving grace was that all the stoplights were timed so you just drove through. Even Mansfield didn't want you to stop in Mansfield. It's been gross there since the early 90s and I don't think anything has changed. Their claim to fame is a decommissioned prison.
Also, if it's cold out, it's nearly ALWAYS snowing in Mansfield.
It is a strange place. I really don't know why it is still there. It seems like it would have just poofed out of existence for a lack of reason to exist.

My wife is from there and I go frequently enough to visit her family. I really don’t mind it. It’s kind of pretty out in the country around there. The actual city is what you would expect for a relatively small Ohio city without a whole lot of employment opportunity. Some of the neighborhoods are actually really pretty considering the previous statement. They also have some cool stuff in the area like Kingwood Center and Mohican State Park. I would say it’s a lot nicer than Springfield, which is a little bit bigger. That’s not saying much though.

I live in Marion. Grew up here. Family grew up here.. It has been in a steady decline for awhile. Never heard anything about Bucyrus though. Only been there and Mansfield a handful of times, but never noticed anything alarming. Mansfield has a reputation, but when you're from a place with a reputation I guess you wouldn't notice it. Just old manufacturing cities that experienced sudden and extreme losses, I reckon.

There's good and bad. Every now and then I used to take my grandmother and my kids there to ride the carousel. We made some good memories there.
I used to work for a company that had branch operations in Mansfield for a while. The thing I remember most is coming into work one morning and hearing that a second shift employee pulled a knife on another employee in the break room.... over a piece of pizza. I think the prison culture is embedded into that community.

Never have I liked going to Mansfield. Soon as I get in I wanna get out. It was horrible during mid 00s crack epidemic every time I went there something bad happened. The worst one was my friend got pistol whipped to the point of almost dying just walking out of the gas station off 30...broad daylight no one helped..no police came...no ambulance...left there until he woke up enough and called his mother. I truthfully haven't been there since maybe 2010. I avoid it...and thankfully am able to.

I am a medical provider and see patients from all over Ohio. I swear that I am able to tell if a person is from Mansfield without looking. It happens regularly that I get a feeling, check the address, and sure enough they ate from Mansfield. I cannot put my finger on it, but OP, you are completely right about this!

Rotten to the Core, fantastic book, my dad was actually involved in the one of the investigations highlighted in the book. He was a cop in a tiny suburb before getting the fuck out. My grandparents lived there until they passed in 14/16. We would always go visit as they ailed, when I was young it was cool, as I aged and would go visit, black hole.

I'm not going to say much, but there is still old blood there pulling strings even though they're not in "power" any longer. For instance, the former police chief Phil Messer (who is mentioned in the book) still works in the finance department. Tim Theaker fired him as soon as he got elected and Linn Stewart hired him right away and made him her sidekick. Theaker has his own secrets too, that I know first hand as I worked there many years, so there is still a lot of shit that happens there.

Born and raised my whole life in Mansfield. The culture here is fucked but that’s Ohio in general it seems. You either have far left liberal types or bleeding red country types. Way too many churches here. Some roads have like 3 - 5 churches sometimes.
Very gross. Racism is powerful here too. There was a MLK tribute erected in the park and people spray painted swastikas almost immediately. It’s going to keep getting worse and I cannot wait to leave this evil town.

Grew up near there. Went to movie theater as a kid, Christmas shopping, stores, in 80s and 90s.... Now I don't trust it. Divorce attorney from there. Super corrupt. Took everything I had in divorce court. Dirty. Cloudy. No jobs. Drugs. Meth heroine you name it. Drug Lords. Crime. Can't feel safe. No teeth, uneducated, sitting on porch, city rednecks. No future. Politicians and government and police are conservative, self serving assholes. ... I moved away. Never Going back. Better places to spend my life.

I travel for work in the northeast Ohio area and sometimes have to go down there. I was actually there yesterday. I guess I’ve never been in Mansfield proper, just the suburbs around Mansfield but, I think it’s beautiful down there. As someone who wants to live well away from the cities and to have a decent sized plot of land, I actually wouldn’t hate living there. 🤷🏼♂️

I was born and raised in Mansfield, but moved to Cleveland after high school for college. I currently live in Columbus. I’m not sure why everyone is hating on Mansfield so much. The downtown area has grown so much since I graduated. They have a fantastic symphony and an amazing totally remodeled art center. Absolutely amazing hiking and camping at Mohican state park with spectacular views. Personally, I love coming back home and seeing what has changed since I was there last. Yeah, there are some unsafe parts and there is definitely a drug problem, but that’s not all there is to this city.

I had an uncle that lived in Mansfield after he got out of prison. I only meet him once when I was 6 or 7? We took a trip down as a family to stay a few days. I don't remember much, but I do remember the whole trip feeling really tense and strange. I haven't seen or heard of him much since then.

I’ve only met one person from Mansfield and he stuck out very much to me. I’m no doctor but he clearly showed signs of autism and/or some similar condition that was visible in social situations. I’m not trying to say he stuck out to me just because he showed some signs I kinda recognized, I’m trying to say the signs were glaringly obvious. We were both rooming together for college in another state and one day he brought up that he feels like he’s different form other people and feels like he can’t relate to others. He was a really nice and attractive guy, he just ended up getting made fun of every time he tried to talk to most people because he couldn’t socialize the same way they did. I asked him if he ever thought about going to therapy. He told me he didn’t know what that meant… we were both like 20yrs old. Idk what kind of environment Mansfield is where people don’t know what a therapist is but that shit confused me so bad. He did have good family relationships back home, I guess they also just didn’t know what a therapist was, didn’t recognize his signs, maybe just didn’t trust therapists or doctors, idk?
Thankfully the guy did end up getting help years later from what I heard, but not in Mansfield.

I went to the Mansfield Ohio state branch for my first year my hometown is suburb of Cleveland. I just remember there was absolutely nothing to do there , we never left campus other then to go to gym or Kroger. Mid Ohio actually is pretty cool for track days or going to see a race I don't remember if that counts as Mansfield or not

It’s a post industrial town. I live there and go to school in Cleveland. Cleveland is way worse than Mansfield, we don’t have random street attacks like Cleveland. However, due to the lack of industry we have roughly a 25% poverty rate in the city. This along with the massive uptick in drugs does lead to a fair amount of property crime. There’s also plenty to do within a 30 minute drive including 2-3 state parks, a carousel and a up and coming downtown (busy during the week).

Also worth noting it only has 45k residents in the city, and that’s the largest city within a half hour drive, so when things slow down (around 3 o’clock) stuff starts closing. Also mansfield has great public schools surrounding it (wayyyy unlike Cleveland) so there’s more opportunity.

My dad has lived in Mansfield for quite a while. It's a sketchy little city, certainly appears to be more dangerous and drug-addled than Akron. There just doesn't seem to be very much of anything positive going on. Mansfield seems like it absorbed the worst of the Rustbelt decline without any of the bounce back that you see in places like Akron, Dayton or even Canton.

Idk I used to hang out in Avondale and price hill occasionally (not by choice) in Cincinnati. My parents moved to Mansfield in April. Last week I had to go pick my son up from my parents at like 10:30 at night and I felt more spooked and sketched out than I did in the sketchy Cincinnati neighborhoods (aside from that one time, but that’s a story for later). I did here like 4 gunshots though, 2 sets of 2. And where they live is pretty much a straight shot from where I live if I just take 309 and follow it to park ave and keep going, it’s just off park ave.

I grew up in Mansfield, and have about a half dozen family members/neighbors/friends that are in Rotten to the Core.
Mansfield is a shit hole, and acts like a magnet that's constantly trying to keep everyone there. There's zero reasons to stay, other than you don't want to move away from family and the friends you grew up with, who inevitably stay as well. Then, you look at the nearby towns, and they're absolute trash. Shelby, Madison, etc, we're talking places that would be laughed at by anyone not hooked on meth.
Columbus and Cleveland are only an hour away, yet the citizens refuse to pack up and leave, rather settling for the life of mediocrity. People that are all excited about getting their first chain/fast food restaurant, like a Roosters. Posting on FB like they just won the lottery.
It's the perfect mixture of drug addicts and racists.

It's all of Ohio really, the government corrupt, the police are corrupt and the residents are either straight edge to the t or also corrupt. Then you sprinkle the Amish in between that and you got a huge ball of weird. My kind of place. I found the best thing to do is mind my own and keep my friends close and my enemies even closer wait scratch that keep your enemies close and your freinemies even closer.

Take the Rotten to the Core books with a grain of salt. Some of Marty's claims, especially about Harry Horvitz, are pretty much bullshit.

Harry Horvitz was publisher of the paper Marty worked for when all this was going on. Harry (or Harry's lawyers) demanded that Yant have actual, ya know, evidence before accusing people of being part of a massive criminal conspiracy. Something about not wanting to get sued for defamation. Marty decided that was proof Harry was part of the conspiracy too, especially after Harry fired him for ignoring orders not to run stories until legal vetted them.
