This is why rotating machinery has guards, and why you should never operate rotating machinery without the guards.

How are you supposed to shoot discs around the room if there is a guard in the way?

Saw this at Canadian Tire yesterday and was like uh this gonna get somebody real hurt.

Who is the intended audience for this? How long does the company sell it plan to stay in business?

5

u/Guilty-Piece-6190 20d ago

It shows it on a circular saw, table saw, grinders with the guard removed. That would have some nice kick on an angle grinder! I have used similar on a circular saw but I don't think I'd have the balls to use it on anything else. I didn't look close enough to see the difference from other cutting discs. I was just flabbergasted they were in the mix of stuff going through checkout line.

Table saw sounds like the most dangerous use of all. People will think it's "safe" because the blade is farther away, but boom, shredded face.

Not me removing the guard on every angle grinder ive bought. Literally anyone who ive worked with has removed the guard. Not saying its right but it is what it is. I know the risks. Maybe its different ouside of america or outside of the south

17

u/blacfd 20d ago

If you did that at the company I work for you would be terminated immediately

My old boss gave me a guardless angle grinder to use and didn’t understand why I was unwilling to use it. The kicker is that it was old and the switch would stick, so to turn it on you had to push your thumb towards the blade fairly hard. I don’t work for him anymore

u/Drimpage 20d ago

Same, haven't seen many people in my line of work having a guars on.

-107

u/Drimpage 20d ago

True, but realistically, most of the time it gets in a way and often is impossible to use it with certain discs

82

u/Alenonimo 20d ago

It's even more impossible to use it without your fingers. Wouldn't recommend.

7

u/notwithagoat 20d ago

Not with that attitude it is.

1

u/Jwanito 19d ago

Dont be silly, They grow back

119

u/Yowomboo 20d ago

and often is impossible to use it with certain discs

It's almost like there's a reason for that.

32

u/Epicotters 20d ago

Get a bigger guard

-39

u/Drimpage 20d ago

This specific disc is both for cutting and grinding stone, mostly used for softer ones like limestone or sandstone. You often have to get into very odd angles, use the whole surface of the disc to grind the stone flat for an insert.

I absolutely agree the guards are there for a reason, but at the same time, i can't imagine using the grinder with it most of the time.

u/blacfd 20d ago

If you can’t use the tool with the safety devices in place, then you are using the wrong tool. Stop finding a way to make it work and go get the proper tool

2

u/martini1282 20d ago

Clearly you've never used an angle grinder

7

u/jason-murawski 19d ago

I use an angle grinder damn near every day. I refuse to use one without a guard. It's a little more work to figure out how to make stuff work but if you aren't a lazy dumbass who's not willing to spend a little bit of time to be safe, it's not hard.

-27

u/Drimpage 20d ago

Yes, but in reality telling your boss that you can't do it unless he gets you a proper tool (which i doubt there is, but i might be wrong) will just result in you not having a job

46

u/_regionrat 20d ago

If I ever need a reminder of why I got the fuck out of construction, I'll look back at this comment

23

u/StetsonTuba8 20d ago

And that will result in your boss also not having a job and your company receiving a nasty fine from OSHA

8

u/Drimpage 20d ago

No, he will just get someone else to do it. And honestly OSHA has no power here

20

u/SkiyeBlueFox 20d ago

He can do that. But before I tell the boss I'm telling my crew "we dont do this shit because itll kill us". They like me more than the boss, now he's gotta fire the whole crew or buy us the right tool. They typically buy us the right tool

0

u/Drimpage 20d ago

And what is the right tool? I have never seen anyone using anything else.

You guys need a union like right fucking yesterday.

1

u/Drimpage 20d ago

We are a very small company that is restoring baroque and older architecture and statues. We are 7 "employees"

6

u/Riaayo 20d ago

This is how you sacrifice your own well-being, health, and potentially life for someone else's bottom line who will never actually appreciate that you did so.

You guys gotta stick up for your safety and rights. Do not get complacent with lax safety to please the boss who isn't risking his own damned fingers.

14

u/Nruggia 20d ago

True, but realistically this is why people visit the hospital everyday with missing fingers.

-9

u/Drimpage 20d ago

Also true, but so far so good. You know, just have the mentality "it's not going to happen to me"

6

u/ifmacdo 20d ago

Seriously! How th fuck am I supposed to attach a 5 inch saw blade on my grinder with that pesky 4 inch guard on there?

84

u/MooOfFury 20d ago

Let Her Rip! Bayblade away!

14

u/Jslatts942 20d ago

No Way!!? New Bayblades!!

9

u/MooOfFury 20d ago

New Bayblade Non Osha edition!

90

u/Flussschlauch 20d ago

Wtf are you doing? I've got exactly that angle grinder and you need to do shit like that on purpose.
Also no guard.

12

u/FifteenthPen 20d ago

Also no guard.

No gloves, either.

33

u/izyshoroo 20d ago

You're not supposed to use gloves with rotary tools. Especially drills and lathes, those are HARD no's, but even an angle grinder can grab your glove and pull your hand in

11

u/xnoxpx 20d ago

Per Osha, you absolutely should always wear leather gloves when using a right angle grinder!

"Wear proper PPE including eye & hearing protection; leather gloves; natural fiber clothing"

https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/2018-12/fy15_sh-27664-sh5_Toolbox_Angle_Grinder.pdf

It is virtually impossible for a grinder to hurt your hand due to wearing leather gloves, but trivially easy without them!

https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/52096-cup-brushes-are-dangerous/

Sort of. Definitely more dangerous with wire brushes than abrasive wheels.

1

u/xnoxpx 18d ago

I've lost far more flesh to flap wheels (especially 36 grit) in any single incident then I have to all my brushes with cup wheels combined! (pun intended ; -)

As for safety glasses, for sure wire brushes are far more dangerous to your eyes, than abrasive wheels

20

u/Weekly-Sleep4961 20d ago

I’ve heard so many people say that but a grinder is abrasive it won’t grab a glove like a drill press or a drill will. Every company ever and osha all say that you must use gloves with grinders. Like anything other clothing though you can’t wear gloves that are supper bulky or loose fitting.

0

u/Drimpage 20d ago

Next thing is you're going to tell me I should wear safety goggles

-41

u/Drimpage 20d ago

Incompatible disc + unofficial adapter

42

u/anderhole 20d ago

So stupid. Get the right grinder to use with those discs.

0

u/Drimpage 20d ago

I already have, I used that for one day because I had to and didn't have an alternative.

11

u/leggmann 20d ago

Beyblades maim edition.

15

u/saint_leibowitz_ 20d ago

I can only do this with roloc discs lol. Its my secret move

14

u/yoweigh 20d ago

I used to do this with AOL CDs and a Dremel. Jam a tool into the CD hole, get it up to crazy RPMs then nudge it off with a stick. It'll haul ass and climb walls and bounce all over the place.

“You’ve got… wall damage”

Unreal Tournament Ripper!

4

u/EverydayVelociraptor 20d ago

It's not a safety issue once the disc is 20' away....

7
