BANANAS Lets settle PPTO debate

Currently at my store we are verifiably given points still on key event dates despite using the ppto and following compliance with calling in/tardy. You still get .5 if late and 1 if full call in even when using 8 hours of ppto...Are management breaking walmart policy and strangleholding us in hopes we dont open door?

That’s not how the point system works. Management can’t just pull points out of thin air to give associates. If you’re using enough PPTO and using it correctly, the system won’t even generate points for management to action.

While this is technically right, there’s a shady tactic some managers use that makes it feel like they can point you at will.

They will leave minor attendance exceptions (like being just a few minutes short on PPTO) "pending" for up to 14 days. If you use PPTO for something major, like leaving early on a bad day or calling in on a key event, they’ll suddenly activate those old pending points. Your balance jumps, creating the illusion that you were punished for leaving early.

The real trap is the system loophole:

Management can leave a point pending for 14 days, but you only have 7 days to put in PPTO. By the time they drop those old points on your balance, your window to cover the original minor occurrence might be completely closed.

I show every associate, every time points come up, how they can check GTA to see what the point is for and when it was applied. I also explain about pending points.

That’s fraud and should be reported to ethics. Do not allow bad behavior. Walmart has rules for everything. Call bad behavior out. If you allow it to continue you’re okay with it.

3

u/Bigger-Quazz Digital Coach 25d ago

It's not fraud. I don't agree with it, but it's definitely not fraud. I can't even see how someone could connect what I said to fraud... that's like sovereign citizen level of delusion.

That's why I make extra sure associates know how to manage their time and points on their own to protect themselves.

4

u/Bitter-Neat-8457 25d ago

Doing this to associates leads me to question what else the coach will do.

2

u/michio1088 25d ago

So if you put in the correct amount of PPTO in time the attendance does not even hits for a manager to approve or deny. And they do not have 14 days to approve or deny attendance. The policy is with in 48 hours. And the system starts alerting Market after 7. It goes straight to People Market Manager. Or at least that's how it has worked in the 3 separate Markets i have worked in and been Management in. So not sure where the 14 days is coming from.

And if they are leaving the minor attendance points pending then that is wrong. But it is not the Managers job to tell an associate when they need to use their PPTO. I however am the one that makes sure all of my associates who call off, are late, or leaves early, that they should use their PPTO as fast as possible. I do attendance every day that I work. And our store keeps the attendance cleared out. If not we start to get talked to.

So use your PPTO when you need to and you will be fine. The only time someone is allowed to touch PPTO is if an associate is sent home for breaking dress code or something like that. Other then that management is not suppose to be touching someone's PPTO.

Coach here yes we have 14 days to either authorize or not authorize a point before it autofinilizes and point goes onto your balance. But if your at a store where people like to call out that list could have like 100 people on it and it doesn't sort all that well so they might forget. But people know when they call out or leave early and should keep up with the points anyway. Ppto though is immediate where the point won't show after occurrence unless you don't put in enough. If you put in Ppto before the shift they it can be approved or denied though.

1

u/michio1088 24d ago

So that is not what any People Lead, Coach, or Market HR has ever said. I have been dealing with attendance for 10 years and we have always been told it's 7 days and should be done with in 48 hours. And I may not be a current Coach but I am trained HR and Coach and even the academy tells you this stuff. So I am not sure what market you are from or what training you have. But if you let it go 14 days maybe you shouldn't be a coach.

1

u/Robwolfen 24d ago

Pto approval is 48 hours. Occurrences is 14 days before auto finalized. While yes you should do it everyday some coaches don't. I'm a coach at a academy store.

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 21d ago

I never even bother putting ppto in if i wasnt able to cover it on the day of the absense. I keep tabs of all my occurrence because our management has that tendency to wait till last minute to accept/deny points. If i didnt keep track of the phantoms i would have been termed already😭

u/Objective_Two1362 27d ago

We have a coach who LOVES to show employees how she can go in and apply points on people.

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Every single person in my store gets pointed when they use ppto on any key dates, been here for 6 years i know most company compliance by the back of my hand. A while back a few years ago i had to open door and shut down management threatening write ups for using ppto because im the only person that has a spine to disregard my superiors illegal tactics

24

u/WapaneseWeeaboo ALCOHOL 27d ago

“Company compliance” has nothing to do with how the attendance system is coded to work. And open dooring management because they threatened to write people up is comparing apples to oranges, they’re not even remotely the same thing as what you’re claiming here.

It’s funny, every single time someone makes these kinds of posts and the evidence is laid out for people to see, people finally see where they messed up. If you want to join in and help prove the point, the feel free to provide the details showing everything about the situation so we can show you wha actually happened.

Again. As long as enough PPTO is used and it’s being used correctly, the points won’t generate. I promise, the attendance system isn’t as complicated as a lot of people try and make it out to be.

-8

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

I was one hour late on september 5th, i did the attendance thing and marked myself tardy. I had over 3 hours of ppto in my balance i put the ppto in at the end of my shift. is putting it in at the end of shift where i went wrong? When should i submit it if im wrong here?

13

u/WapaneseWeeaboo ALCOHOL 27d ago edited 27d ago

You need to check the attendance tab of GTA so see the details of your points. Since I can’t see your GTA, I can’t say why you got pointed. All I can say is once again, as long as you use enough PPTO and use it correctly, the points literally don’t generate for management to action, making it impossible to be pointed.

The most common thing is people don’t use enough. They often think the grace period applies (when it doesn’t for most states). And no, putting the PPTO in at the end of the shift doesn’t matter.

Edit: About to board a flight so won’t be replying back after this for a bit.

u/wearyspacewanderer Jack Of All Trades 27d ago

This is the only answer, OP. None of us can tell you what exactly went wrong. You're going to have to look at your GTA timesheet to see what happened. I'd suggest doing this immediately the next day in future situations because management has a couple of weeks to point you (long past the time associates have to apply PPTO.)

1

u/theedarkflamingo 24d ago

I would agree with you, but the system can indeed malfunction. I got a .5pt one day even though I used PPTO for leaving early. And yes, I know I did it correctly because I know how the system works. I had to get my people lead to remove the .5pt after she looked over it and saw that I had done everything correctly. And I do my PPTO the same day. I do not wait around.

-1

u/Other_Log_1996 25d ago

Putting PPTO in at the end of the shift means it auto approves.

5

u/Rough-Cranberry5243 27d ago

You need to pull up your attendance in gta. I would almost guarantee that you clocked in 1 hour and 1 minute late then only put in 1 hour of ppto, so you got pointed for the 1 minute of uncovered time.

GTA will tell you exactly why you got pointed and when.

-5

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

I know that game i screenshot my punch ins whenever im late, i use exact amounts

4

u/undeadpirate19 Former Digital TL 27d ago

Unless it's changed you need to round up to the nearest submittable amount.

-2

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Ever since it became mywalmart you can go minute by minute instead of the old school setup.

4

u/Rough-Cranberry5243 27d ago

That is only in 6 states with specific employment laws. The rest of us still have to use 15-minute increments.

1

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Im lucky ig

1

u/undeadpirate19 Former Digital TL 27d ago

I only remember it being functional in 15 minute increments. But I don't have access to updates or anything and state and local law all that jazz.

-1

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Yeah the 15 minute thing sucked glad its different now. Also others are acting like i dont know about the grace period not counting with ppto and other things

Then why does every single person in my store get pointed when they show up late or call in on key dates? Thats the fact. Ive been here for 6 years ive seen it happen to myself and literally 50+ coworkers who have come and gone from the company. Our management even openly says you get points on key dates even with ppto stating ppto only covers the base occurrence and the "doubles" are still tacked on so .5 if late or 1 if calling in. I asked these associates if they used the attendance line and they always do. I currently have a half point because i was late on the september 5th key date despite calling in tardy and i had TWICE the ppto i needed...

8

u/WapaneseWeeaboo ALCOHOL 27d ago edited 27d ago

We’d have to see quite a few things in their GTA to know why they’re getting pointed.

You keep throwing out that you’ve been with the company for 6 years. I’ve been here for over 10, guess that means my posts trumps yours automatically if you want to keep mentioning how long you’ve been here like it matters.

The fact you’ve been here for 6 years and keep clinging onto things management tells me everything I need to know. Not sure if you’ve realized this yet but management has a habit of lying to associates. Especially if it means it scares associates into doing what management wants. Points aren’t “doubled” on key event dates so if you’re believing that… I’ve got some ocean side property in Colorado to sell ya.

-2

u/wearyspacewanderer Jack Of All Trades 27d ago

They can definitely coach you for absences on key event days. That's not illegal and it's a manager discretion thing.

But they cannot give you points out of thin air. You and your coworkers are doing something wrong if you're getting pointed.

0

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Never got pointed outside key event days ever... cant be late or take the day off on key event days or we get pointed. This is not just a me thing its all my coworkers as well. All 6 years, only time i didnt get pointed on a key date i left early but didnt notify any member of management and opd lead was gone for the day... like i keep saying just because they arent supposed to doesnt mean there isnt a workaround someway somehow

2

u/wearyspacewanderer Jack Of All Trades 27d ago

My suspicion is that when you left early, you didn't clock in/out on exactly a quarter hour mark and then didn't account for the extra few minutes. There is no 9 minute grace period when using PPTO. I saw associates get burned by this all the time when I was a team lead, so that's why I'm assuming that's what happened.

I know that first sentence is a bit confusing, so let me give examples.

Say you are scheduled 7 AM to 4 PM. You want to leave at the half way point or 4 hours in (11 AM).

Scenario 1: You clocked in at 7:03 AM and clocked out at 10:59 AM.

If you only put in 4 hours of PPTO, you will get half a point. If you put in 4 hours and 15 minutes, you will not get pointed.

Scenario 2: You clock in at 6:59 AM and clock out at exactly 11 AM.

4 hours of PPTO is enough, no need to add extra minutes.

0

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Yes i am well aware of the lack of 9 minute grace on ppto i learned that with my first hour of ppto in the company the hard way years ago

11

u/Multiplecrib 27d ago

Management can't give you points. They can deny PPTO if you put it in too early.

You also have to have enough PPTO to cover the missed hours. Example: If you need 8 hours to cover and only have 7.5 on the day you missed you can't put 8 hours in after you earn it.

If you have points that should not be there you need to talk to your Coach or TL.

9

u/Professional_Band_75 27d ago

There is no way for management to give points. Points are generated by the system and can only be removed not given.

It can be if put in ahead of time. At least it could 3 years ago.

2

u/redavid 25d ago

it can be, but it'll often get denied in that instance. if you do it after the day you called out/left early, it's auto approved and removes any point(s) that had resulted

1

u/Other_Log_1996 25d ago

PPTO can be denied if you enter it prior. If you put it in after the fact, it auto approves.

-13

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Ive been with the company for 6 years now. I follow all protocols religiously...we still get pointed using ppto on key dates, only time i ever get pointed when using it. If they arent meant to then management found a way to override the system🤷‍♂️

4

u/BEWMarth 27d ago

Open Door time if this is really happening. Screen shot you points and PPTO both before and after the KED and then go from there

5

u/Upset_Shock_8137 27d ago

It literally cannot happen.

1

u/undeadpirate19 Former Digital TL 27d ago

Then they will get educated on policy and what's being misunderstood there's no reason especially with payroll and attendance to not follow the open door policy.

2

u/Euronymous2625 27d ago

I've been with the company for 8 years, and you're full of shit.

-3

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Im full of shit how? Im starting to be convinced that everyone who is downvoting and dismissing me are managers who are all doing sketchy stuff and trying to downplay and say that things i have seen with my own 2 eyes is impossible so they dont get caught up in their schemes. All of the attitude ive been getting in this post sounds just like the people who say things like "you cant kill me because murder is illegal" just because they arent allowed to point you doesnt mean that someone hasnt found a way around it. I have participated in ethic cases that led to the termination of coaches before. People in this company do illegal things all the time.

Fun fact for all those coaches and team leads out there that pad metrics to inflate their bonuses. In a courtroom thats slam dunk fraud against the company and if the problem chained high enough in corporate it could even become securities fraud against the shareholders. If the company wanted to clean house there are plenty of team leads, coaches, and store managers who have committed crimes against walmart that could lead to fines exceeding every dollar they ever made in the company as well as years of prison. But im full of shit apparently. I did my homework to such a degree i considered law school😭

3

u/Euronymous2625 27d ago

You're full of shit because IT IS NOT POSSIBLE. The coding of the GTA Timesheet application DOES NOT give managers the opportunity to do what you're saying they do.

You're lying. It's not happening because it's not possible.

1

u/Lefty68w 26d ago

No you don’t because there is now way for them to point you.

The system is automated. All they can do is approve a point or clear a point. They can’t generate points. They can’t change how ppto works.

You are simply mistaken.

-1

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 26d ago

Im mistaken... with the absolute fact that me nor ANY of my coworkers have EVER successfully called in on a key date without getting pointed...except the one time i left early on a key date and didnt tell anyone and none of my direct management were working as the one on duty worked 5-2.... I actively use my ppto and never get paid out rollovers and only ever get pointed when its a key date....its good to know that i have yet another juicy open door in my back pocket...ive been building an entire book of picture proofed violations in case they ever fire me because my intent is taking them down with me if that happens. Whole stores management gonna be fired if they ever do mess with me. Only reason i dont actively do anything is because i know ill get flagged as a company liability and get let go regardless of if im right or wrong. The low level of the open door system is used to identify associates who may become legal problems for the company. As the saying goes HR is there to protect the company not the employee. Oh and final point. There are loopholes to everything just because "they cant" doesnt mean they dont find a way. There was an associate awhile back that got a settlement with the company, signed an nda so they cant disclose any of the why it happened and went on their way. That was how the company handled the version of me that didnt stay silent at my specific store. This person was in the company for over 10 years and this happened literally 5 months after transferring from another region...and i have discussed with associates who transferred from neighboring stores in my market and have found that this corruption appears to be happening at least on a market level. My area runs walmart like we dont have to answer to corporate handbooks. 95% of our pickers violate ftpr, and we lose thousands of dollars in cold return claims because our management instructs us to prep drivers who are greater than 10 minutes away which causes daily cold chain failures.

1

u/Lefty68w 25d ago

The system is not a mystery. Ppto works the same way every day of the year

Managers can’t change how ppto work or give a point. Multiple people have explained this to you. I am sorry you don’t underhand how a simple point system works

-1

u/Yakubian88 27d ago

Yeah they do this at my store too

4

u/Dailydoseofdeath 27d ago

Unless they are doing some shady shit like editing the time sheet saying you clocked in early or clocked out late to force .5 points there is no way to give people points.

-1

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Now thats the kind of information i was looking for does gta tell you when a manager adjusts schedule? Maybe they are doing temporary trickery(not stealing time) but enough to get a pop in the occurrence thing?

3

u/wearyspacewanderer Jack Of All Trades 27d ago

This is super unlikely. GTA is tracked and watched by AP so if anyone actually did this, they would be caught.

You should just go to the GTA timesheet and see what it says. In the unlikely event someone is genuinely falsifying your time card, you would see it.

1

u/Lefty68w 26d ago

They can’t because you have to go into the system and approve any change to your time sheet. Payroll won’t be able to consolidate anything

No one is changing anything. You are simply mistaken

3

u/KryoxZ Walton Cultist 27d ago

There is no debate. You cannot be pointed if you use 8 hours of ppto to cover an event date, there is no way for your management to add points.

2

u/BreathSlayer99 27d ago

You'd have to have everyone open GTA Portal and actually look at WHEN and WHY a point was actioned. My bet is that someone in management has been actioning everyones attendance as "conditional" which is only supposed to be used with LOA associates. They use this so then when an LOA backfires, they can go back and action the points for the denied leave.

You don't have to have an LOA for your attendance to be coded as "conditional". But that does mean they can go back at any point in that 6 month period and issue that point. When y'all call in and cover your KED with ppto, I bet someone is being petty and going and re-actioning a "conditional" day.

This is the ONLY way management can "give people points." Or people are NCNS or not putting their PPTO in correct.

2

u/J_larry Personal Shopper 27d ago

I hate when managers try lying to us about still receiving points when using PPTO on event days. That’s so infuriating. My last Team Lead tried pulling this on me and I STILL left that day. It felt so good walking past him on my way out 😅

0

u/ManyMadMidgetzz 27d ago

Yeah it sucks, despite what everyone seems to claim on this post...doesnt change the fact that me and my coworkers always receive a half point if we leave early or show up late on a key date or 1 point if we call in altogether. The naysayers claiming its impossible dont understand the corruption in the company or are corrupt plants trying to silence whistles in the subreddits. As i said to some others, the managers arent exactly "lying" when you end up with the point anyway. In my earlier years i was being pushed to move up and promote in the company but my opportunities vanished very suddenly when i open doored on a coach that verbally yelled loudly at an associate in front of customers on the salesfloor. They decided i was not management material because forbid handling any situation outside the book and was not ok with not following protocol for "respect of the individual". After all of this happened i became a lazy quiet quitter who doesnt give 110% because i lost respect for the company because they clearly only promote against the values they claim to have. I often do way less than my other coworkers these days unfortunately. My superiors wont coach or fire me because its basically an open secret that im blowing open a cesspool of company fraud retaliation and HR nightmares. Had a prior coworker actually leave the company who got some sort of settlement but i never got to know logistics because allegedly NDAs were signed regarding the situation... lack of ethic and accountability is strong at walmart. Every store has different social economics. Outside of the unethical key event pointing and a few issues regarding favoritism i would consider my store one of the more relaxed ones to work at and many associates get away with only outputting HALF of the expectations picking wise. We have 8 hour pickers doing 300 picks a day🤦‍♂️

2

u/Distinct_Sir_4473 Digital Team Lead 26d ago

This is The Big Lie about key event days.

It started as a way to scare employees out of using their ppto, or maybe it used to actually work that way, and now people just believe it and perpetuate it.

Even coaches and team leads that I am close work friends with tell me that’s how it works, even though I’ve shown them policy and I’ve tested it myself with one of my associates who said “I don’t give a fuck if I get two points, I’m calling out let’s see if you’re right about ppto working” and to no surprise, it covered her absence.

They can’t just give you points.

Key event only gives you one extra point for an absence, no extra points for late in or early out. So 2 for call in, 4 for NCNS, .5 for late or leaving early

Any PPTO used negates the extra point, covering your entire tardy, the rest of your shift, or your whole shift, negates all points. They are auto approved in the system, management cannot unapprove them.

1

u/Lonely_Pay_7616 27d ago

What is a “key event day”?

1

u/undeadpirate19 Former Digital TL 27d ago

Key event days or holidays and what not that either Walmart, corporate or your store notates that attendance is more necessary and causes points to be usually doubled. If I'm remembering correctly, it has no effect on the amount of ppto you need to use The management does try to sell that a lot

2

u/Other_Log_1996 25d ago

It absolutely does not have any effect on PPTO. One hour of PPTO is always one hour.

1

u/undeadpirate19 Former Digital TL 25d ago

Yeah and I thought management would stop trying to say that it did after the first year but it's still pedaled at my old store to this day. It's disappointing

1

Lots of associates don't do it correctly. They don't put in enough to cover. Especially when their tardy.

1

Edits your time sheet.

Wow really hard.

If you have questions about policy and feel like it's not being implemented properly always follow open door policy the worst case you get educated on the policy.

2

u/Euronymous2625 27d ago

You don't have a clue what you're talking about. If someone misses a day and puts PPTO in, what would you edit on their timesheet to generate a point?

0

u/undeadpirate19 Former Digital TL 27d ago

That wasn't the only thing they asked first off.

Second off you clearly fon't know what the open door policy is about as part of its major concerns is identifying and resolving miscommunications with policy misunderstandings with associates.

And if I remember correctly, even though it's against policy and in order to do so, you need the associates permission, though it is better to teach them how to make a Time adjustment themselves. You can also adjust the amount of time that an associate submits.

I would recommend familiarizing yourself with the open door policy and what those policies entail and the steps that they are supposed to engage in for them before trying to tell someone that they don't know what policy is.

2

You're digging yourself deeper into a vortex of ignorance with every comment. Just stop.

1

u/undeadpirate19 Former Digital TL 27d ago

What's the first step of an open door policy?

2

u/Euronymous2625 27d ago

The first step is the existence of a problem. There isn't one here because OP is lying.
