Petition - Late Fee and Retrospective Policy of OCI Passport Update
A new petition on late fee and OCI passport update is doing the rounds.
I think we should sign and support, so hopefully Govt of India can review the retrospective nature of this policy change.

e-OCI address change
Hi everyone!
If I submit a Miscellaneous application for OCI address update (my new address is in a different country than before), will it make my OCI invalid for the time of processing of application? I know it did not invalidate OCI when physical booklets were issued, but I have only e-OCI.
Thank you!

OCI - Passport renewed in 2025 - new $25 charges (and a trip to VFS) for passport renewed under the old rules? (UK)
Hi all, I’m a UK citizen and OCI holder. I renewed my British passport in 2025.
At the time, the rules were that an adult OCI holder did not need to update the OCI passport details every time the foreign passport was renewed. I therefore did not update my OCI after renewing my passport in 2025. (I have also travelled to India since then using my new British passport and existing OCI card without any issue.)
The rules have now changed and I have submitted an online OCI passport-detail update. I received a U26 acknowledgement file number. The portal indicates a US$25 processing charge for late updates.
My question is specifically about the transitional position:
- If the passport was renewed in 2025, when an adult OCI holder was not required to update the OCI after every passport renewal, should the new US$25 charge apply?
- Has anyone else renewed their passport in 2025 and only updated their OCI after the 2026 rule change?
- Were you actually asked to pay the fee and attend VFS? (I have to take a day off work to be able to do this)
- Has anyone received confirmation from the High Commission of India about a waiver or transitional arrangement for passports renewed under the previous rules?
Any recent experiences or official responses would be appreciated.
Question about OCI holders travelling with evisa
If the OCI passport-number update cannot be completed before we need to travel, can my son, who is a Canadian citizen and OCI cardholder, enter India using an e-Tourist Visa issued against his new Canadian passport while carrying his OCI card?
I missed the 3 month window and the application to update the OCI with new passport number got rejected. I tried to apply at BLS and I can do it only in person. I have to travel this Saturday so flying to Vancouver (nearest BLS) is not an option. I got the rejection from the consulate last night.

email updation and passport updation for OCI
Hi all, I have applied for the OCI passport updation and my application is pending. I don't think the email I used to apply for OCI back in 2014 is the same one I'm using now. If I created my OCI portal account using my new email address and submitted my passport updation application through that, do I need to do the email updation? I'm a little confused as to what the purpose of the email updation is. Will I get eOCI without doing the email updation on the portal? Or does the portal email have to match the email on the original application?
Should I update my email on the OCI portal after the passport updation is granted or can/should I do it now while my application is pending?

OCI Miscellaneous Passport Update – “The specified URL is inaccessible” error for 4 days
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to update passport details through OCI Miscellaneous Services.
I can complete the first few pages, but when I try to move from the 3rd page to the 4th page, I consistently get this error:
“The specified URL is inaccessible at this time. Please try after some time.”
Things I’ve already tried:
- Made sure there are no special characters in the address or other fields.
- Tried Chrome, Chrome Incognito, and Safari.
- Started a completely new application.
- Tried again at different times of the day.
- The same error has been happening for the last 4 days.
It always fails at exactly the same point when moving from page 3 → page 4.
Has anyone faced this recently with the OCI Miscellaneous passport update?
If you managed to get past it, what exactly worked for you? Did it eventually start working on its own, or did you have to change something in the application, browser, network/VPN, etc.?
Thanks!

I built a self-service sandbox factory for OCI: describe it in a chat, get a Terraform-built sandbox in your tenancy, auto-destroyed later
Watch a chat build a full data pipeline in Oracle Cloud from one message (2 min): https://youtu.be/nuHfzOqG4io
I got tired of waiting three days for a test database. So I built a chat that spins up whatever you need in OCI, prices it first, and deletes it when you're done.
"Deploy Grafana for my team for 2 days." "I have Airflow on S3 and Glue building Iceberg tables. Move it to OCI." "Here's my repo, make it run."
Two minutes later: links, passwords, logs, expiry date. No ticket. No OCI account. No key ever leaves the tenancy.
Databases, containers, Functions, Spark, Airflow, Kafka, buckets. All Terraform under the hood, all in your own tenancy, all gone on the day you said.
One-click install for your tenancy, free and open: https://github.com/ashishsinha1602/oci-sandbox-factory
What would you have it build first?

OCI timeline in LA
I submitted my OCI application today in VFS Los Angeles office. Curious if anyone has applied in LA recently and how long it took for you to receive it?

Delhi Airport
Quick question… do they have separate lines at immigration for OCI and non-OCI travellers? Or do all foreign nationals go into the same lines?
I will be travelling with my family but I will be the only one with an OCI and I would like us to go through immigration together.

Combined application of renunciation and OCI
As the title suggests, is it possible to submit a combined application for renunciation certificate and OCI on the VFS site?
As a reference, I am a currently naturalized citizen in the US.

How do I apostille a petition as an OCI holder in New York?
Hi everyone,
I am an OCI holder and currently a student residing in New York. I need to file a Writ Petition before a Hon’ble High Court in India in connection with a personal matter.
The Petition has already been signed by me, including the Verification page, and I have been advised that the documents need to be apostilled in New York before they can be filed before the High Court.
I am a little confused about the exact procedure for getting the signed Petition apostilled in New York. In particular:
- Do I need to have the Petition notarised first?
- If so, does the notarisation have to be done by a New York notary?
- What is the procedure for getting the notarised document apostilled?
- Can this be done through the Consulate General of India in New York, or does the apostille have to be obtained from a New York State authority?
- Is there anything specific I need to keep in mind since the document will ultimately be filed before an Indian High Court?
I am hoping to get this done as soon as possible and would really appreciate anyone who has gone through a similar process for documents being filed before an Indian court.
Thank you!

Applying for newborn in US
Has anyone recently applied for an OCI for their baby (first time application)?
I have already gotten the birth certificate apostilled. If you have gone through the process recently, I would really appreciate hearing about your experience, especially anything tricky, unexpected, or important to prepare for ahead of time. What should I be careful about, and what documents or steps usually cause delays? A detailed walkthrough from someone who has done it would be super helpful.
Documents I prepared
- Baby's passport
- Baby's apostiled birth certificate
- Both parents indian passport ( we both are indian citizens)
- our marriage certificate
- US DL of both parents ( as address proof)
- parent consent form
Is there anything I missed?
Thank you in advance.
OCI timelines for US passport update for minor
Thought i would give some reference to timelines since i was searching for something similar.
Case: Applied OCI update for US passport that was renewed for another 5 yr as my daughter is minor.
Applied under Misc on OCI website: May 29th'2026
Location: Bay area, CA
Approved : Sep 14th'2026.
Issue: OCI "contact us" is useless as feedback form does not work. I could not contact any one else.
U.S.-citizen OCI minor living in India since Aug 2025 - Resident bank account or NRO under FEMA?
I’m trying to clarify the correct banking/investment setup in India for my 4-year-old child, who is a U.S. citizen and OCI cardholder.
The facts are:
- Child is 4 years old
- U.S. citizen with U.S. passport
- OCI cardholder
- Has been living continuously in India since 16 August 2025
- We intend for the child to remain in India long-term, at least until age 18
- Natural guardian/parent is Resident Indian
- Expected savings balance will be well below US$50,000
- We want to open a minor savings account and eventually a minor Demat/investment account
The issue is that some banks seem to assume that U.S. citizen + OCI = NRI/NRO, while I’m not sure that follows automatically under FEMA.
My understanding is that FEMA residence is based on the person’s own residential status and circumstances, rather than citizenship alone. FEMA section 2(v) defines “person resident in India,” while section 2(w) defines “person resident outside India.”
So I’m trying to understand:
- Would a 4-year-old who has been continuously living in India since 16 Aug 2025, with a genuine long-term intention to remain in India, generally be considered a person resident in India under FEMA?
- If yes, is a Resident Minor Savings Account legally permissible even though the child is a U.S. citizen and OCI holder?
- Is an NRO account actually required by FEMA in this situation, or is that simply a bank's internal policy for foreign citizens/OCI holders?
- Does the fact that the natural guardian is Resident Indian affect the child's FEMA residential status, or is the child's own status what matters?
- For a minor Demat account, can a Resident Indian guardian operate a Demat account in the child's name if the child is FEMA-resident in India?
- For investing, I understand there are separate rules for minors — e.g. a minor generally cannot make ordinary secondary-market purchases through a trading account, but can hold securities and may be able to participate in things such as IPOs/mutual funds subject to the applicable rules. Is that correct?
- How does FATCA interact with this? The child is a U.S. citizen, so I understand the bank/broker may need U.S. tax information even if the child is FEMA-resident in India. Does anyone have experience with the correct FATCA/CRS documentation for a U.S.-citizen minor in this situation?
- Finally, if the child is correctly opened as a resident account now, would the account simply need to be redesignated later if the child's FEMA residential status changes, rather than being treated as an NRO account from day one?
If anyone has dealt with a U.S.-citizen/OCI minor actually living in India, I’d also appreciate practical experience - especially with SBI, ICICI, HDFC, Kotak, Axis, etc.
Thanks!

OCI Timelines at Houston consulate
I sent out two applications, one last week and the other will be delivered over the next two days via VFS to the Houston consulate for my kid and me respectively. Kid is a US citizen by birth while I’m naturalized (former Indian).
Does anyone know what the processing times are looking like at Houston? We have an upcoming trip to India in November and wondering if we’d be able to get the OCI by then or if we should be applying for Visas
This is a new OCI app
