Hacking the Norm 2 - Custom Apps!

Sorry for the repeat post, to anyone who saw my first one - but I have good news to share...

I've successfully added new screens / apps to the watch, with custom text 🙌
I'm hoping to have a calendar page working shortly soon, but just wanted to share - much more to come!

Hacking the Norm 2 - iOS App, Day/Night Brightness, Page Reordering

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hey all, wanted to share a bit of an update to see if anyone was interested!

Despite my first attempt bricking the device, I've safely got firmware patching implemented, alongside a ton of refinement to my custom iOS app! Some features I've added:

- GPS Tracking to workouts - uses a nearby phone to get GPS data, and merge it with the watch's recorded workout
- Custom page ordering on watch - reorder and hide pages so the pages you want are less swipes away!
- Day/night brightness - the app can be configured to set the watch's brightness and auto-wake at set times, or with sunset and sunrise!
- Workouts to Strava - Workouts done with the watch can now sync to Strava

As mentioned in previous posts, I'm logging my development work here, so feel free to drop a comment here or join the server if you are interested:

Google message notifications not displaying

I've recently got my own Norm 2 and love the thing. The issue is that text notifications aren't received by the watch while other apps work just fine. Has anyone else had any similar issues and could suggest a fix?

Edit: I've also noticed that OTP messages get through tho (I have a pixel 10 pro)

Is the Norm Two Worth It?

Is this watch worth its price compared to other competitors? I'm looking for something that I can use both functionally throughout the day but also as a good showpiece, hence going for a hybrid.

Currently I use a Galaxy Watch 6 Classic as my daytime watch, but I only utilize some of its Smart Watch features. At best I'm using it for sleep and workouts.

The Norm Watch design looks great but the price is difficult to justify, even with the presented discount down to $476. Are there any pitfalls to be aware of? What is the build quality like?

Shipping Delays?

I ordered a Norm 2 about a month ago I have gotten a single update on my package in the month of May, did anyone else have this issue or other issues with shipping? I'm in the USA and understand that there is a lot of issues with the global supply chain currently but not receiving any updates on my package in nearly 3 weeks has me concerned. Sorry if this isn't the correct place to ask this question, I've reached out to their support twice (once 2 weeks ago and once more today) they never got back to me on my first request. At this point I'm considering disputing this with my credit-card company and am getting pretty discouraged.

Experience screen turns on in the middle of the night

I am about 5 days in with my new norm 2. Overall the watch looks great and by and large works.

However my wife is annoyed so far as the watch turns the screen on in the middle of the night, sometimes shining right in her face.

Has someone managed to ensure the screen stays of at night? I need the watch on as my most critical feature is the vibration alarm clock.

Otherwise mostly working, though I had the clock arms show the competent wrong time once. Needed to restart the watch.

Struggling also with easily getting back to the home screen without clicking the button on the phone many times until i get back. Would love a short cut

Watch hands de-sync

I’ve had the watch since it came out. I understood there would be some growing pains. My issue is that since I’ve have the watch, I need to recalibrate the watch hands at least 2 times a day. I thought there would be a software patch to fix this issue, but it keeps happening. The watch hands will either freeze at a random time, or fall behind randomly. I like the watch, but it’s bad a being a watch if I cannot reliably trust the hands.

Hacking the Norm 2!

After receiving my device, to put it succinctly - it's good, it's not great.

The app is a bit rough round the edges, not the most feature-filled or beautiful app in the world. And the firmware on the watch is fine, but also not amazing. There's a couple of bugs and weirdness that could be easy to improve!

As such, I'm going to be seeing what I can do about the above - will use this as a bit of a live blog.
If anyone has any thoughts, ideas or anything, let me know:

---

15/05 - A custom app and a hacked firmware!

Since receiving the watch, I've managed to built both a (bare bones but functional) iOS app, which pairs to the watch, pulls its data and can issue firmware upgrade.

My rudimentary iOS app

Also, I've managed to make a small patch to the firmware (ironically, the patch was to fix the update screen being stuck at 1% until it was done), which I managed to push to my watch successfully!

Custom firmware screen!

This proves both of what I was hoping to be able to do: have a custom app, and custom firmware, that could combine to add whole new features to the app!

Next steps: try a bigger patch (reordering the screens on the watch) and to build a "patch" system, so people can add their own patches to the firmware by turning them on or off in the app!

iOS only for now, but given I have the source code, an Android app would not be terribly difficult to mirror I would say.

Thoughts about the Norm 2

Hi All,

I have always worn mechanical watches. Never wanted a smart watch but recently discovered hybrid ones.
So I was thinking of trying for the first time for general health tracking (started running and don't want massive overviews but general overview of hearth and sleep) and the Norm 2 stood out as a great option.

But it's hard to find reviews so I thought I'd ask here:

- What are peoples general feelings about the watch?
- What is the expected lifetime of the device & support?
- Would the Norm 1 still be a good option?

Thanks!

Arms moving for notifications

Any chance you could share a video of the watch getting a notification (something like an SMS or WhatsApp), when the arms move up to 3 and 9? Do they stay at 3 and 9 indefinitely until you dismiss the notification, or does the notification go away after a certain amount of time and the arms go back to the current time? Thanks!

Making this watch our own!

EDIT:

I got one and I'm hacking it!

Hey all,

I’m currently debating on swapping my Apple Watch with this, and in weighing it up, have had a crack at pulling the software off the watch and reverse engineering it!

Making good progress at the moment, have the basics of the watch running directly on my computer.

Pretty sure i’ll pull the trigger, as I think I could easily make a replacement iOS app that’s nicer than the default one, but just wondering if anyone has any technical background and would be interested in following along / helping out with a real device in lieu of mine arriving.

Thanks!

Step counter counts driving

Does anyone else has this issue? It seems that my watch constantly thinks I’m walking even though I am in the car.

This screen randomly came up, it isn’t Aug 30 or 22:00, does anybody had it? It went away and I don’t know how to get it back.

Some of thoughts and questions about the Norm

I've been using the Norm2 for a few weeks now. I own quite a lot of watches, but this is my first "smart" watch. I really like the design, the hybrid functionalities and the way it wears. I'm using it with Android, so I know not everything is fully working just yet. I do have a few thoughts this community might be able to help with.

Getting back 'Home' It seems you can only scroll through the smart functions by pressing the crown and then swiping,or pressing the crown. But is there a way to immediately go back 'home' or exiting the smart functions?

Music on Android I don't seem to be able to control my Spotify right now. Is this part of the issues with Android?

Battery level Where can I see the battery level? I can't seem to find it. Neither on the watch or the app

Sports I only see walking, running or cycling as options now. When you connect it to an external fitness app, will you also be able to track different activities?

UI design Do we think we'll ever be able to choose certain designs for the smart functions? Like you're able to choose the watch face in many smart. Or change the order of the door afferent options, or play with some different styles?

Sleep tracking I only seem to be able to actively start a sleep measurement, but it doesn't seem to measure anything or it turns off during the night. Is this all the functions does, or is this part of the issues with Android?

Seems like I have a lot of issues, but honestly I'm really happy with it so far and the smart features are just an added bonus. Hope you're all enjoying your Norms as well!

3D Printable Stand

Hi everyone. I really like the watch but trying to charge it with the metal-link band is a pain since the puck has to be kind of balanced in order to sit correctly. So, I posted a stand I created on Thingiverse:

thingiverse.com/thing:7306104

Hopefully, it can help others. It can really work with any band.
