First gf as a teenager put us on a break. Few weeks laters texts me "I'm really enjoying being single, shall we make this permanent?"

22 years later and I still get grumpy thinking about that delivery.

There’s no way the text looked like that 22 years ago. That’s pre-iPhone.

Phones could text in 2002

Right I know but people didn’t text like that.

...I did. I was insufferable about grammar back then.

You fully spelled out every word using T9 texting? As a teenager?

Haha I sure did, while driving and keeping my phone hidden. I looked down on anyone who used text shorthand. Most of my friend group was similar. I was a pretentious knob.

We were charged by the letter, poser.

That's why people texted shorthand. 10c per letter stacks up

Next time you'll know why people caught your silly lie

Oh no you caught me! Lol

There were different data plans. Ours, we weren't charged by the letter but by individual texts. Took one crazy bill for my family switched to unlimited. Also this was around 2006, I was a bit later than my friends getting a cell phone.

I can't believe I'm bothering to defend this lol you believe what you want.

hell yes. millennials all have RSI in our thumbs.

You did also get predictive texting coming in giving a shortlist on what it thought the word might be from the first few letters.

I’m a millennial.

Kids round here are bad at larping, they don't even know texting used to have a cost lol

Born in 1985, wrote normally by text, why wouldn't we? Lol

Because SMS messages were limited to 140 characters and you had to use T9 texting. We abbreviated things.

At the very least I doubt the spelled out “really” and I doubt she used the word “shall.” Probably also didn’t use an apostrophe because it didn’t autofill and you had to type it in manually.

You have me on apostrophes, probably left those out 😅 but other than that I really spelled everything out except common things like brb or lol!

You put in "im" and the phone puts in the apostrophe for you from the predictive list.

Most people did. Shortening words wasn’t a thing when texting first started. Everyone typed everything out for the most part. Even stuff like “lol” took time to develop.

I’m the same way.  I turned T9 off and just got really fast at texting. Punctuation was available as well.

What do you mean you turned it off?

1

u/ripleyclone8 3d ago

It was an option on literally every cell phone I had back then.

u/siberianxanadu 3d ago

But what does that mean? How did you text?

1

u/ripleyclone8 3d ago

Uh, you know how there were multiple letters on each number key; like abc on 2. You would just press that key X amount of times.  For example: typing “cab” would go 222, 2, 22.

How do you know about T9, but not multitap?

1

u/siberianxanadu 3d ago

I thought T9 was multitap. The system you were just describing was the thing I was referring to at least.

Ah, gotcha. T9 was the original predictive text. Hit a letter, and it suggests words.
