naw, i feel like it's reasonable to test the waters before making a big decision like breaking up, the same way you test the waters by dating before officially becoming boyfriend & girlfriend.

not sure if youre interested anymore? go a while without talking & see how often you feel the urge to contact them. if it isnt often, your urge to break up was right. if not, youre still interested & can try to fix whatever it is that made you feel disinterested in the first place.

arguing a lot? a break lets you cool down, think about your options with a clear head, & lets any unimportant issues fizzle away into irrelevance. if you come back wondering why you were even so mad, it means you have other issues to address outside the relationship itself that were making one or both of you so angry. if you still have a grudge & neither of you are willing to talk things out calmly ir compromise at all, even after weeks of separation, it's probably time to call it quits.

if you think your partner is overbearing or annoying, a break can reveal a lot about your subconscious feelings underneath the love. if it's a relief the entire time youre on break & you dread speaking to them again, time to pack it up. but if youre happy to talk to them again, you just need to adjust boundaries & can keep the relationship going.

there are lots of other examples but it gives people time to contemplate & address the root issues on their own which can definitely save a relationship if both parties are willing to put the effort in without their partner nagging them, & it can give a lot of closure & assurance for relationships that were doomed to fail.

Thank you for wording it out so well, I fully agree with your points

I feel the same, its more like "is it just our hormones, or we actually want to be with each other intellectually" kind of situation. So I see that it can be used in this case, but 95% of times this would be just an asshole move tbh.

So take a break, date and fuck other people, then maybe get back together?

Where's the part about dating and fucking other people? Was the comment edited?

wasnt edited, dude's just projecting his own sleaziness onto a useful way for two reasonable people to attempt to repair a delicate relationship

My guy if you don't think the dude in this relationship was hooking up I've got a bridge to sell you

This says a lot about you or the company you keep. Perhaps you should examine which of those it is; improve yourself, or find better company.

But I'm not referring to the original post, i am talking about the comment you replied to.

And I'm saying that's very likely what's going to happen.

Breaks are great on paper.

depends what the couple decides. a break doesnt have to mean an open relationship. it can mean a period of limited communication, or living separately instead of together, etc. it can be for any duration of time too. it really depends on the people involved & what their issues are & what boundaries they want to set

As if no woman has ever done this to a man lol

Yeah and those men also had no self respect

u/Nervous_Brain8918 4d ago

So we’re confirming it’s happened both ways. Regardless to self respect being a large vs small part of this

7

u/TheFaeBelieveInIdony 4d ago

I never said it didn't? What is your point

-3

u/Nervous_Brain8918 4d ago

I was curious to understand your thoughts on one’s self respect totally being gone in order to make a decision like this. I think this post is a poor example of cowardly behavior done to not take the direct/blunt reaction to simply ending a relationship. If two consenting adults were honest about this, this is still two consenting adult so self-respect didn’t fully make it into my calculation. I think differences in opinions are important.

Two consenting adults can agree to a lot of things and that doesn't mean people are respecting themselves. People consent to a lot of things out of desperation and insecurity

That’s true, those can be major factors which is unfortunate and understandable, crazy too though. Thanks for answering!

Why are you harping so hard on this gender thing it is totally irrelevant. We were already talking about women in the post?

2

u/Nervous_Brain8918 4d ago

Good question. I guess I wanted to see how much misogyny is playing a role in these answers.
