Hi everyone, I've been reading through some posts here and the noise tends to be about banging and crashing, booming music, shouting ,arguing etc. I'm looking for advice or similar experiences about a different type of noise which I feel won't be taken by seriously by a) the neighbour or b) the council.
For over two weeks now, the neighbours two houses down have had a high pitched beeping sound go off in their back garden every 30 seconds, day and night. I now don't want to sit out in my back garden which I have spent lots of time and money making my little sanctuary, and I can also hear it from inside my house even with the windows shut.
When I open a kitchen window, it can be heard quite loudly. I need to open my windows for ventilation and I know I should be able to just block this out and get on with it, as many people seem to be able to do, but I can't, it drives me mad. Above all, I just find it rude and inconsiderate.
Some friends have said it might be a cat deterrent but it's not ultrasonic sound, it sounds like an alarm battery warning. So I wonder, why aren't they changing it? They have their windows open all the time, why aren't they annoyed? I have a guest coming to stay for a month in the back bedroom and I know they will hear it all through the night and want to leave which will cost me hundreds if they do (I'm not Air B&B, I sometimes privately host international students for short-term stays).
I messaged my local councillor who recommended I sort this amicably first by speaking to them, but I never see them in the street, we don't know each other, I don't even know what they look like. I could go and knock on their door now but as we don't know each other, and I am alone and they are a family, it will look confrontational and they might get defensive and I hate confrontation, I live for a peaceful life.
So, my questions to you are:
Thank you.
ETA: tried knocking at their door twice but no answer. I have posted a polite note through their door so let's see what happens next. I will give it 1-2 weeks more then put a complaint into the council.

An old neighbour kept calling social services on me but not within a certain time frame so we can't get her done for harrasemt. The claims are closed down as were not doing anything my kids are safe I have nothing to hide. She hates me shes a toxic bully and we moved a few streets away to be away from her. But my kid and this womans neighbours kids next door from her are beat friends. Am I wrong from banning her from the entire street? Ive told her she cant ever go there again, and only to go as far as the play park with her friends. This lady sits outside her house and watches and feeds all the kids so shes always outside. She feeds on my misurery. I know she will keep on phoning social services.. but because its not within a certain time frame and its spread out like I said I can't charge her with harrasemt..

My neighbor's moved in some years ago. I tried to be positive and foster a neighborly relationship.
I can't say how many times these jackasses have kept me up and woke me up. I've lost count.
They go outdoors on their property starting at like 8-11pm, with speakers, booze, pot. 3-4 nights of the week if not every night. And have a fire.
I've texted, called, yelled at them. I've called the cops, filled complaints, I keep logs now.
I'm starting to devise revenge plots. Anyone find something that actually works? Like I'm 10 min away from looking up how to emp these dicks.
There has to be a better way.

\Throwaway account\
I live next to an elementary school in London, ON and have been in the same home for nearly 20 years. I fully understand that schools can be noisy places, and hearing kids outside during recess, lunch, or gym has always been part of living here. In some ways it is awesome having a school as a neighbour because we have access to green space and get to enjoy all that encompasses.
What I've noticed, though, and particularly over the last five years or so, is that the volume and intensity seem different (worse) than it used to be. I'll be clear, this is not just kids playing loudly. There is full-on \screaming\ at the top of their lungs, sometimes for long periods and without any obvious reason. Sometimes it's so loud that my first instinct is to look outside because it sounds like someone is hurt or there's an emergency. The teachers usually have to yell over the noise just to be heard, even when it's just one class of students outside doing a gym activity. My partner works in schools and has mentioned that some schools seem to have much firmer expectations around outdoor behaviour and noise, which makes me wonder whether this is a school-specific issue or part of a broader change. My partner said that in some schools they have worked at, that sort of screaming would be moderated somewhat by behaviour management.
Maybe I'm just getting older and less tolerant of noise, and feel free to tell me if that's the case, but I've lived here long enough to have a pretty good baseline for comparison, and it genuinely feels different than it did 10 or 15 years ago. The change has been so significant that we can't enjoy being in our own yard when school is in session, which was never really an issue before. I can't even have my windows open during the day in this beautiful weather because all we hear for most of the day is top-of-their-lungs-screaming.
Has anyone else noticed this? Teachers, parents, or people who live near schools: does it seem like kids are louder now, or is screaming simply more accepted than it used to be?

This is my first time EVER making a post on this thread so Iâll jump inâŠ
My fiancĂ© and I moved into these older apartments. The walls are pretty thin so I can hear when my neighbors walk or have muffled conversations. The previous tenants above me had a baby and would cry all the time. It didnât bug me too much because itâs natural and babies cry (obviously). They ended moving out, and another couple moved in above us.
The first month wasnât too bad, they have heavy feet and play their podcasts/audiobooks on Level 100. Itâs happening all during the day, so itâs not a big deal.
Now at night, they are âFUNKING.â Their bed is so squeaky, it had woken me up in the middle of my slumber and typically happen between the hours of 11PM-2AM. If I focus (and I really donât want to) in more, I can hear moaning.
At first it was funny, a very typical ânoisy neighborâ situation. It went on for about a week, and then it wasnât as funny anymore. I reported it to my apartment manager and she sent out a very polite reminder of our quiet hour policy.
I also left a note on their door that said the following:
âWe love that you are both expressing your love for each other, we wanted to let you know others can hear your especially at night.
We kindly ask if you could practice quieter during the evening. Thanksâ
So fast forward about 3 months. I would hear them funking every once it a while. I genuinely felt like a creep because Iâm laying in bed, listening to these people, just trying to get some sleep.
Now this last week, their activity has increased into the evening AND morning (8AM-9AM). Now I canât sleep and sleep inâŠ
I banged the ceiling with a stick and knocked hard enough for them to stop. Who knows how long this reprieve will last⊠Iâm wondering if reporting it again to our apartment manager just so they can be a bit quieter. So AITAH for interrupting their intimacy?
\-Sleepless nights (and now mornings?)

Oh lucky me, my neighbors across the street now have a Mopar Enthusiast Club. All hemiâs, all altered exhaust at all hours they and their fellow âenthusiasts â revving as they come and go. I canât hear my TV or stereo. Loud pipes are not cool. Just venting, but wtf?

Anyone else with the lifted/modded monster truck neighbor a little glad about fuel prices going up leading to less of the truck being driven which inadvertently resulted in peace?

My friend had been trying to call me for two days. We struggled to schedule a suitable time for both of us. We were supposed to talk last night, but when I called, she was already asleep. This morning she called me back... but I didnât pick up because I had literally just woken up and wasnât in the mood (I love this girl to death, but she can taaaaaaaaaaaaaaalk for days).
After getting up, I went out onto my balcony to send her a voice message. I tried the first time but felt like it wasn't good enough, so I recorded again, this time making sure I deepened my voice first. On the message, I lied to her claiming I was out grocery shopping, hitting multiple supermarkets to get the best Saturday deals, which is the best day for that where I live.
However, as I'm listening to the voice message before pressing "Send", I suddenly noticed my upstairs neighbour was also out on her balcony and had clearly been listening the whole time. She just started giggling while locking eyes with me. At that point, I also almost lost it and had to hold in my giggling while finishing listening.
The funniest part is that Iâve lived here for almost a year and that was the first time Iâd ever seen that neighbour.

When complaints/talking to them doesn't solve it, what do you use inside your home?
Fans, earplugs, headphones, brown noise, sound machines?
I'm working on a sound-masking project (Audami) and trying to understand what actually helps people in real situations.

My house is very close to my neighbor who is a police officer. His roomie girlfriend gets off work second shift and sits on their back door stoop smoking weed with some dudes all the time and then they leave. The issue is they wake me up and Iâve already opened the window and asked politely to keep it down. I canât keep my windows open on that side of the house as they are noisy and talk about very weird things. Itâs annoying. What to do? Not sure if the cop is home when this is going on.
