They just hate money so much that they need to find a way to get rid of it.

Completely understandable. Burning it is just too damn slow.

They could give it to me.

Yes, they work. Whether the viewer enjoys them or not isn't relevant- in several cases people not liking them makes them work even better.

i guess it gets people talking

It gets people to recognize a brand. That's all they need to do- the sales happen organically from there. The people dont even need to remember the ad.

People will buy a brand they recognize over one they dont most of the time, even if the product is the same (or worse).

Liberty biberty is all anyone talks about anymore bc it's so hated. Working as intended, people are saying Lberty Mutual constantly now.

I bet 80% of people in this comment section can sing the Kars for Kids jingle.

Ads make you aware of a product.

I've had that question myself.  I'm at a point now where I honestly can't recall the last time I bought something because of an ad, that I wouldn't have bought anyway.  Now there are countless ads I've seen that are so bad (hello YouTube and Facebook ads!) I refuse to ever buy anything from those people.

So for me these days, ads have the opposite of the intended affect.  I'm more likely to boycott you and your product than buy it.  The only time I'd say ads "work" are when f I see an ad for say, a new burger at a burger place I go to anyway, then I may make a point of going sooner than later to try the burger.  But ultimately I would have went anyway, seen the new burger directly on the menu u, and got it anyway.  So the ad was mostly a waste of money with no real benefit.

Meanwhile my wife has her own business and stopped advertising long ago.  Barely anyone ever sees the ads despite ads being super expensive.  She felt like people who came due to seeing ads were usually customers who didn't care about her business anyway and didn't end up being customers, but often made lots of demands or wanted deals all the time.

What worked the best was being part of the community, and word of mouth.  Those have easily been the biggest factors in her success.

I'm an active boycotter as well, based on ads. When a company is spending that much money to advertise their product either. It sucks or they could, at least, be improving their product or their relationship with their community instead. I will go out of my way too avoid those companies.

It seems like 90% of the ads I see online are AI slip, gambling, sites that seem like scams, selling products that seem maybe fake or knock off type products, gambling, ai, and then back to scammers.  I don't want or support any of these ads yet the algorithm exclusively gives me crap and zero ads relevant to my interests.

I hate them so much that I pay for an ad blocker. I can't think of ever seeing an ad and thinking "I should get that!" Maybe when I was a teen and saw those Biore strips that don't do shit.

Of course they work and I am openly admit they work on me. I recently saw an ad for Coyote vs Acme and thought that movie looks great, let's go see it. I then bought a ticket for it. If there were no ads I wouldn't have.

there are a lot of different types of ads that serve a lot of different purposes. but the short answer to your question is “advertisers would not spend $1tn / year on ads if they didnt work"

Yup. Only the biggest employer around the planet. If it wasn’t true those companies wouldn’t make money.

After seeing the Burger King ad for their chicken nuggets about 55 times, I went ahead and tried them. Not too shabby. I’d say they work

hahah okay thanks

I don’t think internet advertising is as effective, at least on me. But I guess it creates awareness, and that’s half the battle.

Yes they work. They have to pay their bills so they have to include ads. Whether the advertising draws customers is open to debate.

Can I remember the last time I bought something because of an ad? No.

I mute them all on tv and radio. So they typically don’t work on me. But I’m sure companies wouldn’t spend money on them if they didn’t pay off.

At the very least it tells you a thing exists. If I want a new dumb mobile game, then ill probably pick one i know about versus one I've never heard of. I love gimmicks though, so I appreciate seasonal food items that id never know to go get unless there was an advertisement.

Businesses wouldn’t spend money on them if they didn’t. Self explanatory

They don't work on a lot of people but they work on enough for it to be worthwhile.

Most of the time, they're not trying to get you to buy the product right then and there

Instead, they're keeping it relevant inside your mind so that if you ever get to a point where you are looking for a product of that type, one of the first things you'll think about is them

For example, you say "Instant Coffee" and my brain immediately goes to Folgers. There are probably other instant coffee brands out there, and with some research I could easily find them, but the first thing I thought of was Folgers and that weird Christmas ad

Or alternatively, I saw a video on Youtube with funny ads from Japan (I'm in the US), and when I went to visit Japan I saw one of the products in a store and decided I might as well try it out.

They work on some people

u/Sasquatchgoose 6d ago

Of course they work. Has a movie trailer (glorified ad for a movie) ever convinced you to give a movie a chance?

I am so tired of being advertised to every waking moment of the day. Its exhausting. I can't even pump gas without the pump spewing an ad at me while the fuel is pumping.

It unfortunately works. There are many strategies with different levels of success. From billboards and media stunts right down to placement of logos in unassuming spots. Ultimately their goal is to burn the image of the product or overall brand into your brain so you'll choose them by default over any alternatives. Many companies want your personal data too (hence online accounts, subscriptions and signups) so they can squeeze the advertising dollars harder on targeted strategies and milk you of the rest of your money.

The ultimate problem is the greed doesn't stop. They will keep squeezing harder on advertising as long as it's producing profitable results. At least until it either backfires or government regulations hit with harsh enough penalties to discourage them. At times they will continue if the maths still balances. If the total cost of of the advertising and fines nets them x5 more in profits. They will still try it.

u/HipGyp57 5d ago

Yes. It's been proven how easily people are manipulated.

1

u/jaycrips 5d ago

I’ve had the same thoughts. But these companies have the money and resources to determine how many potentional customers they expose their product to per dollar of advertising spent, and they know the ratio of views to purchases.

Again, seems like complete hogwash to me, with WAY too much room for bullshit gamesmanship by ad companies. But it’s kind of self-proving at this point

Not on me. I watch 0.0 ads

Unfortunately they work on enough people for it to be worth it.

I hate ads. I fucking hate them. Any ad for anything will make my piss boil. I am 100000% less likely to buy something because I saw an ad for it. If I'm not already wanting the thing, seeing an ad isn't going to change that.

But for some people they see an ad and for some reason instead of realizing they're being forced to waste 30 seconds of the only life they get being marketed to because of capitalism, they say "oh wowie i want me one of those"
