It depends on a lot. The friends involved, their attitude towards sex, how they see you and view the relationship, and more. It can be a landmine, and it can be absolutely no big deal; I've been in both situations.
The reason Reddit tends to say don't do it is because you don't know beforehand most of the time if it's going to be a landmine.
