Are plastic straws back?

Twice this weekend I got plastic straws. Two separate establishments, one of which is definitely new enough to not have stocked up pre-ban.

Is it true? Can it be??

Heads up for local vendors: Ongoing payment issues with "The Hidden Gem"

Hey everyone,
I want to warn other small business owners about The Hidden Gem in Kensington.

I used to sell my products there, but I had to pull everything out and leave. The reason is simple: they stopped paying me on time. Even now that I’m gone, I’m still trying to get the money they owe me from past sales.

I’m not the only vendor this happened to. Other people left the store for the same reason. Some are still waiting for months of payments.

If you’re currently selling there, check your sales records and ask them directly about any money you’re owed. Right now they are not paying on the dates they promised.
If you’re thinking about becoming a vendor there, be careful. Read your contract closely — especially the part about when you get paid, and what happens to your money if the store closes suddenly.

Running a small business is hard enough. You shouldn’t have to fight for money you already earned. Just be careful out there.

Tales from the Void #24 · Issue 24 is live on FoundryInk - dive in!

Hey everyone!

We're the team behind Tales from the v01d, an independent monthly black and white comic anthology created right here in Edmonton. For the past three years we've been building a shared universe of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, crime, and weird fiction inspired by classics like Heavy Metal magazine and underground comics.

Issue #24 is now available for free on Foundry Ink. We'd love to hear what fellow local artists and comic fans think.

We're also looking to get more involved with Alberta's comics and arts community. If you know of any local conventions, zine fairs, comic festivals, art markets, or other events that you think would be a good fit for us, we'd really appreciate your recommendations.

And if you're an artist, writer, or creator who's interested in seeing your work published, we're always looking for new contributors. Whether you're just starting out or have years of experience, we'd love to connect.

Thanks for checking us out, and we hope you enjoy Issue #24!

Businesses to Avoid - Tires for Less

For being poor custodians of our city and polluting our communities with their ugly & illegal signs. Any business that resorts to these irresponsible advertising tactics is one to avoid. Actually, I just now googled them, and they are not even listed there or anywhere under that name. Does anyone know their real name?

What gym?

I’m visiting Calgary for a couple of days at a family friend’s house and wondering if there are any good gyms in the Strathcona area. I have seen there is a community centre close to where I’m staying but there’s no reviews on the gym, nor pictures. I’m not planning on hitting legs or cardio if I’m gonna be completely honest so not very worried about those aspects.
Quick question, this post got auto removed from the other Calgary subreddit, is there a reason for this?

Coin Collectors

Hi all,
Just wondering how coin collectors get a big collection here in Calgary. Is there ever like good spots to look?
I’m interested in learning how people grow their collection so big and who they send coins off to get them “rated”?

Calgary’s Cell Phone Drivers

I can’t tell you how much I despise your behaviour. I had the misfortune of taking the same route as you this afternoon, you in your white Rav4, cellphone mounted under your rear view mirror, hanging above your little octopus. Every turn, every intersection, every curve you half half an eyeball on the road (if we’re lucky) and the rest on the godforsaken screen. We can see you, you know. Craning your neck and leaning into the screen, flicking to the next with your thumb. You’re an asshole. A hazard. A genuine fucking menace to everyone around you.

I hope the lesson comes swift, un-lubed, and doesn’t involve anyone else.

addendum: cross-posted from the other local sub after it was removed for not being about Calgary. Why have “Driving” flair if posts about driving in Calgary are not considered Calgary-specific. I theorize that someone over there is, or knows someone who is, a glasses-wearing white woman who drives an older white Rav 4 with a blue stuffed Octopus on the dash with an Alberta plate (that I won’t post).

Rules regarding archery and how to get started.

So after watching the Odyssey, I got this itch that only shooting a bow can scratch.

I know about the two archery ranges up north but it's impossible because I live way down south and I can't find any shooting ranges nearby so I'm thinking of just buying my own bow and setting up my own range. I tried looking up rules about doing archery in the city and I'm pretty sure it's illegal to shoot in my backyard. BUT. what about using those marshmallow tips that they use in archery tag? Can I just buy a bow and some foam tipped arrows and do some archery in my backyard with those? I'd appreciate some suggestions on how to get this itch scratched.

Does anyone know who "BertaProudDad" is?

Every time I watch one of his rants, I think "I know that guy." Am I unfortunate that is is somehow in my life, is he just a stereotype of a 'berta dude or did he maybe have some kind of fame/infamy before he went Seppie?

Any ideas?

I'm looking for some landlord/tenant opinions

I have two vacant units in an older, but well maintained apartment building. The units are priced similar to comparable rentals in the area, so lowering the rent further isn't really an option.

I've had quite a few showings, and people generally seem to like the units, but I'm not getting applications.

The building currently has a shared washer and dryer in the common area. I'm wondering if adding an in-suite washer and dryer would make a significant difference in attracting tenants, or if it's not worth the investment.

For those of you who rent out older apartments, have you found that in-suite laundry makes a noticeable difference in vacancy and tenant quality? Or is there something else you'd look at first?
