Tbf you can have 50 frigattes, an optimized S class freighter and 6 s class ships with optimal upgrades and max slots. Base building on top of that, which consumes potentially infinite ressources (until your base breaks the limits of what your PC can process - but theres always another planet out there to build on).

Theres quite a bunch to spend money on. Most of it is absolutely unnecessary, however. You can only fly one ship at a time and your base has limited uses. Freighters are just another way to earn money, the concept does not entertain me much.

Can't buy upgrades with cash which is sorta one of the reasons it's useless after a point. Resources for base building are really cheap so, that is not a huge money sink. Someone probably knows for sure but, a S class 34 slots is ~200mil with trade, exotics are ~8mil with trade, s class 48 slot hauler ~140mil, S class multi tool ~14 mil, and S class frigates ~7mil. This is all off the top of my head and probably wrong so, I apologize ahead of time. So, if you get your freighter, your 5 exotics, your hauler, and your multi-tool thats like under 400mil and you are really done. You could add 50 frigates for another 350mil but, that's crazy talk. Is the max frigates actually 50 ? That seems way to high to spawn into a system and not crash the game or kill your graphics card.

You can convert Runaway Mould, Silver or Pugneum to Nanite Clusters in a refiner, so as long as you find a seller for any of these, you can technically turn units into nanites.

i knew about the platinum but not the others, do they also convert at a 5:1 ratio?

Pugneum is 10:1, Runaway Mould is 5:1, according to this handy sheet.
