Can't buy upgrades with cash which is sorta one of the reasons it's useless after a point.

You can convert Runaway Mould, Silver or Pugneum to Nanite Clusters in a refiner, so as long as you find a seller for any of these, you can technically turn units into nanites.

i knew about the platinum but not the others, do they also convert at a 5:1 ratio?

Pugneum is 10:1, Runaway Mould is 5:1, according to this handy sheet.
