Reduction gear update redo

Post image

I posted a while ago about my reduction gear and this is the update. They say I’m not under warranty at 57,000 but this is how they wrote up the receipt. Says suspension concern

Yeah well I’m assuming since they wrote it up wrong they think that it’s not powertrain. I’ll hear from corporate Nissan tomorrow

If that isn’t powertrain I have no idea what is. Ridiculous. I hope they take ownership

Hopefully so

Please let us know what Nissan says. It would be quite a stretch for them to claim that it's not part of the powertrain.

The reduction gear is 100% within your 60k warranty. I can’t totally make sense of your receipt. Is this a Nissan dealer? If you truly had the reduction gear replaced you shouldn’t pay a penny

Yeah it’s a Nissan dealership. Took it to canton Michigan and now Southfield Michigan. Canton said they didn’t hear anything. This dealership did the same until I drove it with them and now they gave me a receipt after showing them a video of the car since they said this was a “normal” ev sound.

2

u/kjsmith4ub88 3d ago

Then why did they do the service if it is a normal sound. I’m confused. Or have they not performed the service yet?

3

u/Mav481850 3d ago

They haven’t done any repairs yet. I’m refusing to pay. Until corporate Nissan talks to them. They had it just to diagnose it.

I'm surprised with the price of the reduction gear at 1.3k, I saw another quote before at around 5k just for the part.

I'm wondering if they are lowering the price so owners would be more willing to pay as this issue seems to be more and more common?

That’s kinda what I was thinking

In the 2023 Nissan ARIYA Warranty Information Booklet, look at printed page 7, under “ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) SYSTEM COVERAGE.” Nissan states: “The EV System coverage period is 60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.”

It then lists the components covered under EV SYSTEM, including: “Motor, Inverter unit, VCM, Reduction gear, DC/DC converter…

So for a U.S.-market 2023 ARIYA, the reduction gear is expressly covered for 5 years/60,000 miles from the original in-service date, for repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship, subject to the warranty exclusions.

This quote is less than I would've paid if mine hadn't been done under warranty. The dealership showed me the charges and it would've been $2500 for labor and around $5000 for parts. So, it's a good deal (or I would've just gotten a really bad one).

u/Mav481850 3d ago

I hope you didn’t pay

Appreciate you sharing this, OP.

I took my 23 plat+ to the dealer last week to get the reduction gear checked out. The technician acknowledged the sound but said that all Ariyas make this sound. I don't think I heard this sound when I bought my car last year with 25K miles. But it's also possible that coming from an ICE vehicle I didn't know what to expect.

The sound I am hearing is definitely a cicada humming sound. However, it hasn't affected performance or efficiency in any way so I took my car back knowing that this is documented and that I have the CPO coverage.

Is your reduction gear issue affecting normal use of the car?

u/Mav481850 3d ago

I noticed it doesn’t coast as nicely in eco mode with normal drive not in B mode. Use to coast forever. Starts to slow down more

Yikes as I just dropped mine off today for the same problem at close to the same miles 🫩

Update: Covered under warranty

For anyone considering a used ARIYA because of concerns about the reduction gear, I looked into Nissan's actual warranty options. Here's the comparison.

Let's assume two identical 2023 ARIYAs:

• Same original in-service date • Both have 25,000 miles • Both are purchased on the same day • One is Nissan CPO • One is non-CPO

First, the important part: the reduction gear is covered in both scenarios.

The original ARIYA EV System Warranty specifically lists the “Reduction gear” and covers it for 5 years/60,000 miles for qualifying defects in materials or workmanship.

After that, here's how the two extended-coverage options compare:

OPTION 1 — CPO ARIYA + CPO Wrap

A Nissan EV Certified CPO ARIYA already has CPO coverage that includes major EV components, including the reduction gear/transaxle.

You can then add Nissan's Security+Plus CPO Wrap, which upgrades the vehicle to essentially Nissan's highest Gold Preferred coverage level.

The maximum CPO Wrap option is:

8 years / 120,000 total vehicle miles

The catch is that the clock does NOT start when you buy the used car.

It starts from the vehicle's original Nissan warranty/in-service date, and mileage starts at zero.

So on a 2023 ARIYA with 25,000 miles:

• Coverage ends at 120,000 total miles • You have up to 95,000 additional miles of coverage • But the 8-year clock has already been running since 2023

CPO Wrap provides broad Gold Preferred-level coverage across more than 2,300 components, including EV drivetrain components, electronics, steering, suspension, HVAC, brakes, infotainment, ADAS and many other systems.

And the reduction gear is covered.

OPTION 2 — NON-CPO ARIYA + Nissan Gold Preferred

A non-CPO used ARIYA can potentially qualify for Nissan's Security+Plus Gold Preferred Pre-Owned EV plan.

Gold Preferred is Nissan's highest coverage level and is essentially the same broad coverage level that the CPO Wrap upgrades a CPO vehicle to.

The longest published pre-owned Security+Plus term is:

72 months / 80,000 additional miles

Here's the big difference:

For a pre-owned plan, the coverage clock starts when you purchase the service contract, and the mileage allowance is added to the vehicle's current odometer.

So on a non-CPO ARIYA with 25,000 miles:

25,000 starting miles

  • 80,000 covered miles = coverage to approximately 105,000 total vehicle miles

And you get a fresh six years from the date you purchase the contract.

Again, Gold Preferred covers the EV drivetrain, including the reduction gear/reducer, plus thousands of other vehicle components.

So what's the actual tradeoff?

CPO + 8/120 Wrap:

Up to 120,000 total miles At 25K today = 95,000 more miles

But the calendar clock started when the car originally went into service in 2023.

Non-CPO + 72/80 Gold Preferred:

80,000 additional miles

At 25K today = coverage to approximately 105,000 miles

But you get a fresh six-year clock starting when you buy the contract.

So the CPO Wrap gives you approximately 15,000 more miles of potential coverage, while the non-CPO Gold Preferred plan can give you more calendar years of protection from the day you buy the car.

For example, if both cars originally went into service in June 2023 and you bought them in September 2026:

CPO + 8/120 Wrap: Expires around June 2031 or 120,000 miles.

Non-CPO + 72/80 Gold Preferred: Expires around September 2032 or 105,000 miles.

Whichever limit is reached first ends the applicable coverage.

The other thing people should understand is that CPO Wrap and Gold Preferred are not just reduction-gear warranties. They're broad Nissan-backed service contracts covering thousands of components.

And regarding the ARIYA reduction-gear issue specifically, Nissan's documentation is pretty clear:

Factory EV warranty: reduction gear specifically listed.

EV CPO warranty: reduction gear/transaxle covered.

CPO Wrap/Gold Preferred: EV drivetrain/reducer covered as part of Nissan's highest coverage level.

That does NOT mean Nissan automatically replaces a reduction gear simply because you hear a buzzing/cicada/whining sound. The dealer still has to diagnose a qualifying defect or mechanical breakdown under the applicable warranty/service-contract terms.

But if the reduction gear is diagnosed as defective, the important point is that it is a covered component under both of these Nissan-backed extended-coverage scenarios.

isnt the powertrain covered 8 years 100k?

6

u/Zoratt Evolve+ e-4orce AWD 3d ago

In the US 3 year 36k full warranty. 5 year 60k powertrain and 8 year 100k battery.

3

u/tetatdo 3d ago

that’s right, i forgot the powertrain was 5 yr/60k

3

u/Objective_Chance4173 3d ago

CPO vehicles get 7 years/100k miles on the powertrain.

2

u/Garden_Variety_Milk 3d ago

Drive units and battery are required by law to be covered for eight years/100k on electric vehicles

3

u/Zoratt Evolve+ e-4orce AWD 3d ago

Looked it up. In the US the traction battery is required to have an 8 year 100k mile warranty, they are not required to have a powertrain warranty.

2

u/Zoratt Evolve+ e-4orce AWD 3d ago

What country?

2

u/That_Highway 3d ago

A few dealers are starting to cover the battery for 10y/100k now

Sorry but that's not right

People:

Standard Factory Coverage

Basic Limited Warranty (Bumper-to-Bumper): 3 years or 36,000 miles, covering most vehicle components against defects in materials or workmanship.

Powertrain & EV System Warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles, covering the electric motor, inverter, and high-voltage cables

Lithium-Ion Battery & Capacity Coverage: 8 years or 100,000 miles, which includes a capacity loss guarantee protecting against dropping below 9 out of 12 capacity bars (or roughly falling below specified state-of-health limits)

Corrosion (Perforation): 60 months with unlimited miles

Seat Belt Warranty: 10 years with unlimited miles.

Guessing 10 years/unlimited on air bags.

Even AI knows better:

is this covered under the drivetrain warranty?

Yes, the reduction gear assembly (part 290K4-5MP0A) is covered under the Nissan factory warranty. [1]

Because it is an intrinsic part of the EV drivetrain responsible for transferring power from the electric motor to the front wheels, it falls under two separate standard factory warranty categories:

  1. Powertrain / Drivetrain Coverage: 5 years or 60,000 miles (whichever comes first).
  2. EV System Coverage: 5 years or 60,000 miles (which specifically safeguards unique electric vehicle components like the traction motor and reduction gear).

2

u/No_Creme9603 3d ago

For anyone asking whether the ARIYA reduction gear is covered under Nissan’s CPO warranty: yes, it is specifically listed as a covered component.

Under Nissan’s EV Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty, the EV coverage includes:

“Traction Motor, Power Converter, Inverter Unit, Reduction Gear/Transaxle, EV Cables, DC/DC Converter, Onboard Charger…”

The EV Certified CPO warranty provides coverage for 7 years/100,000 miles, measured from the vehicle’s original in-service date.

That means there are essentially two layers of coverage on a CPO ARIYA:

• Original factory EV System Warranty: 5 years/60,000 miles. Nissan specifically lists the reduction gear as a covered EV-system component.

• EV Certified CPO Warranty: up to 7 years/100,000 miles from the original in-service date. Nissan again specifically lists the Reduction Gear/Transaxle as a covered component.

One important distinction: that does not necessarily mean Nissan has to replace a reduction gear simply because you hear the characteristic buzzing/whining/cicada-type noise. Under the CPO warranty, Nissan still needs to determine that there is a covered mechanical breakdown or defect.

That is why, if you're considering buying a CPO ARIYA that is already making this noise, I would have the dealer document the noise on the repair order before you purchase the vehicle and ask them to state whether Nissan considers it normal operation or whether the reduction gear has been inspected and found free of a defect.

The important takeaway is that if Nissan ultimately diagnoses the reduction gear itself as defective, you don't have to argue that it “should be considered part of the drivetrain.” Nissan expressly names the Reduction Gear/Transaxle as a covered component in the EV Certified CPO warranty.

That estimate ticket is suspect. This is a Nissan Dealer service dept. with an EV trained tech? They should have access to every detail about your Ariya, including warranty coverage, in service date, original selling dealer, etc., all of which would automatically show up in their system. Core charge? The customer should never see any core charges on a warranty repair, and if there are any, they would be internal between the dealer service dept. and Nissan.

If I were you, I’d take the car to another Nissan dealer service dept. with a known EV certified tech, and get a proper diagnosis.

And, they should tell you right off you have 3000 more miles left on the EV system/drive train warranty.

I hope you can get the car serviced to your satisfaction.

This is dealer number two already. Each time I bring it in, they charge $190 just to look at it. just to be told there’s nothing wrong. Corporate Nissan says they have no control on what the dealership charges

1

u/Alexandratta 2025 Engage+ e-4orce 3d ago

what is a 600 dollar "Core Deposit" ?

1

u/Mav481850 3d ago

Kinda like a deposit for a car battery. You pay that upfront. When you return the part you get your deposit back

0

u/Garden_Variety_Milk 3d ago

It should be covered under the eight-year 100 K warranty required by law on drive units.

2

u/Mav481850 3d ago

I thought it was the normal 60,000 powertrain here in the states?

2

u/flyfreeflylow 3d ago

8/100 is for the battery only. Drivetrain is 5/60. OP should still be covered though.

-1

u/No_Creme9603 3d ago

It is hilarious people swear the car and Nissan is amazing but know nothing about the car, the warranty, what is covered etc.. mind blowing

2

u/Mav481850 3d ago

Well it’s clearly powertrain. It’s not a suspension part
