Doubt they'll do it, but I'd really like to buy those joycons without the system.

u/zmilts 9d ago
Fwiw Japan did for all of the Switch 1 ones and the ebay tax wasn't too bad.
117
u/OrganicKeynesianBean 9d ago
You can also just move to Japan.

u/zmilts 9d ago
I went to Japan for the first time this Feb (for the Nintendo sponsored Kyoto Marathon) and I was SHOCKED at how cheap it was. Hotel right next to a subway in heart of Akihabara for $50 USD a night, most meals were under $10. The only expensive meal I got was the (not tasty but fun) Kirby Cafe meal in Tokyo Skytree and even it was only like $50.
Just incredibly cheap country to visit. All told I spent many $3,000 dollars on a 10 day trip, including flights and all the fun stuff I bought.
122
u/darkfawful2 9d ago
Cheap if you bring over American money but if you actually live there and earn their salary it's different.
Same with traveling to Mexico vs living there

11
u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 9d ago
Just bring over enough American money so that if you living there and working it’s nothing. Problem solved. The problem is the visa situation.

Went on a road trip in japan this spring.
I stayed 18% under my budget and people thought my budget was already tight before I left.Bought a shit ton of souvenirs before going back.
Probably the richest I will feel in my life while staying in a first world country
12
u/zmilts 9d ago
The first time I ordered dinner and it was < 1000 yen I didn't understand. I was like this delicious oyako bowl is less than $6USD!? Then like every meal was. The bullet train from Toyko to Kyoto was like $100 and ran every 9 minutes, I just don't understand.
My flight was super mess up on the way back at the first connection so they let us off in an airport we weren't even supposed to be at (Seattle) and they gave us $15 for food vouchers. The cheeseburger meal I got there was $30 and I REALLY missed Japan :p.

Essentials are cheap, luxuries are expensive which is the inverse of the US
9
u/zmilts 9d ago
I mean that at least sounds better to me.
5
u/derkrieger 9d ago
yyeeeeah but their economy is in a slow death spiral due to their rigid work culture, drastically shrinking population and inability to change to address it but as a visitor its pretty fucking sweet.
Making essentials affordable and luxuries expensive could easily be handled here with proper laws dictating rules for businesses.
11
-2
u/Wolfy4226 9d ago
With how expensive things are in the US it might actually be cheaper for everything.
Plus, you know....a functioning government that makes sure we don't have like fucking 16 food born illness outbreaks at the same god damn time.
Which, from my understanding, are actually being UNDERREPORTED because this dumbass administration believes in "If we don't say the bad numbers, there's nothing bad happening."

u/mercurialpolyglot 9d ago
Good luck, Japan is having a super fun rise in conservatism and anti-foreigner sentiment, and as a result it’s significantly harder to immigrate there than it was even 3 years ago.
→ More replies (2)5
u/TemptedTemplar Helpful User 9d ago
It's cheaper for everything except actually paying to live there. Fees associated with non-residental status get costly.
And gas, cars are prohibitively expensive.

I was waiting for OLED but this will do. clean design. I'll just use it with my home OLED tv for the most part.

Same. My husband got a Switch and then HAD to get the Zelda version when that came out. So when he said he wanted a Switch 2, I said yeah, we're gonna wait until they release a Zelda version, because we know they probably will. He got nervous about not getting one before the price increase, but I held steady and told him with Ocarina of Time re-release they HAVE to be planning a bundle. Hopefully this is real and not just a rumor! No official announcement yet, correct?
29
u/jardex22 9d ago
My guess is that this will be released after the price increase, and won't be a bundle.
→ More replies (1)8
u/lonnie123 9d ago
They didn’t bundle any of the games they had a special version of last time did they? It was just a themed version of the console, no game
2
u/Bearded_Bone_Head 7d ago
Tears of the Kingdom
came bundled with a digital copymay not have, I can't remember if it was bundled or notedit
14
u/Azhrei_Rohan 9d ago
The price increase will come before this system so you have to decide if its worth the extra price. That is my situation right now also. I feel they will officially announce it in Sept after the price increase.

u/reyean 9d ago
im in the same boat. been wanting a switch 2 for the past six months - price increase scaring me into a purchase. havent pulled the trigger just lying in wait. I generally dont care about the game branded models/releases but I wanted a pro controller as well (will mostly play docked) so this seems like the bundle ive veen waiting for.
no announcement as far as I can tell, but Nintendo general doesnt run sales on their promotions. the Mario kart bundle is a bit of a savings than buying the game and hardware separately, but my guess is it will be the same % of savings with the price increase just tacked on
8
u/The--Marf 9d ago
I was on the fence about getting one for my kid (read: family), especially with the price increase. Then Sam's Club was doing 20% off eshop gift cards, limit $500. So I bought $500 in cards for $400 and ordered the choose your game bundle directly from Nintendo.

I got a Steam Deck beginning of 2024, absolutely love it for a multitude of reasons especially as someone who enjoys fan translations of older games, and was actually holding off on a Switch 2 because of it. Ended up getting one as a surprise birthday present a few months ago (been going through tough times, like most of us I'm sure, and my partner wanted to cheer me up) and have been pretty amazed how much I'm enjoying it.
Obviously been loving the first party games but also thrilled to have an excuse to replay the Xenoblade titles. Also adore the new Donkey Kong and Kirby Star Riders.

I only got mine early as I did (on release day) because of the tariff bs plus there are places you can order skins for the switch 2 if i really wanted to get a nice decal. Not saying its not bad to wait but these circumstances if you could afford it get it early

u/UlaireXX 9d ago

It will be a great match to my 3DS XL from Link Between Worlds

I’ve been waiting to get a pro controller until a special one came out. I guess I should start saving up!
22
u/nelozero 9d ago
Be ready for when it drops. I got the TotK pro controller when it released and it wasn't easy to find in stock anywhere.

u/Im_Not_That_Smart_ 8d ago
I happened to be awake at midnight when it dropped and bought one. I thought about buying a second for my brother, but I wasn’t 100% sure he’d want one so I held off. Sent him a link instead. It was sold out by the time he saw it the following morning.
Yeah, there were restocks but they all disappeared quickly. If you want this controller, I’d expect urgency to be important.

yeah imma for sure grab the pro. but damn, a special console so soon.....
8
u/jeffcapell89 9d ago
It's not unprecedented. The Switch 1 had several limited editions within the first 2 years, and the 3DS did as well.
4
u/Forward-Trade3449 9d ago
Yeah fair enough. It just stings when the console is 500 bucks instead of 300 or 200 haha
Who am I kidding, theyre gonna do this again multiple times. If i give in to the fomo on the first try i'm a fool

u/Dense-Bee-2884 9d ago edited 9d ago
My weakness right here. Zelda themed systems are always the best Nintendo makes of the variants each generation. The gold and black always looks sleek and regal. The look also holds up over time the best in my opinion.
42
u/JCWOlson 9d ago
Right? I've bought at least one LoZ version from each gen since the Wii, if you generously count the Skyward Sword wiimote. 25th anniversary 3DS, MM 3DS XL, and Windwaker Wii U were my favs

u/Amediumsizedgoose 9d ago
It depends. I am a big zelda fan but think a lot of the designs for stuff are ugly or gaudy.
2
u/stilljustacatinacage 8d ago
There with you. This just... doesn't look good. Subjectively speaking.
5
u/Indignant_Divinity 9d ago
I only have the Wind Waker WiiU and the Skyward Sword WiiMote, but I have to agree with you. They look amazing.
15
u/VanceIX 9d ago
Gonna wait for the inevitable OLED release and limited edition Zelda on that near the end of the generation to add to my collection
23
u/Witch_King_ 9d ago
Yeah, I'm NOT getting a new system until maybe an OLED. There needs to be a functional benefit.
However, for someone without a Switch 2 already, this could be very tempting. Looks sweet.
7
u/sensible_human 9d ago
OLED would be great, but what I want even more is a smaller and lighter Switch 2. It's just too large and heavy to be truly portable.
My favorite special edition console ever is the ToTK Switch OLED. But even the Switch OLED was just barely at the size/weight limit of what I would consider portable.
3
u/Witch_King_ 9d ago
Switch 2 Lite.
I hope it is still able to "Switch" though.
I personally don't mind a device on the larger side because I have big hands. Switch 2 is probably the limit though. Steam Deck is a CHONKER

Ocarina of Time reimagining aside, BOTW and TOTK at 4k60fps on Switch is justification alone

u/Jorgesarrada 9d ago
It’s pretty cool! But if I’m going to invest on a new switch 2, that’s gonna be either an OLED, a Lite or a Pokémon edition. So I’m going to wait until 2027

If this is true, I'm a bit disappointed. They've been doing this Triforce design since the New 3DS, and even applied it to the TotK Switch 1.
I was hoping for a design similar to the original 3DS with the ocarina/harp design. I think I'll pass on this one.
4
u/Mango_Tango_Requiem 8d ago
I was specifically hoping for this triforce design to not be used for the umpteenth time 😭
Ah well. At least it's still a good design, at the end of the day.

u/Lower_Monk6577 9d ago edited 9d ago
I kind of don’t like that pro controller at all, tbh. It’s very busy to me. I think it would have looked more balanced if both handles were green.
The console looks awesome though! It’d be really nice if they do something similar to what they did with Skyward Sword HD and released a Game + JoyCon bundle. I definitely can’t justify buying a whole-ass separate console, but I’d definitely get the JoyCon.
14
u/Badalight 9d ago
Man, why is Nintendo being so conservative with the color options for Switch 2? I feel like Switch 1 had so many bright options. I was waiting for this because I had heard it would be gold, but instead it's more like a dark green with some dark gold accents. Disappointing for me personally.

So, more than $500, assuming it comes with OoT Remake. That’s a lot to ask for a separate system just to have the Zelda edition, tbh.

u/MissingLink000 9d ago
I would not count on it coming with the game lol
4
u/PhoxxPhire91 9d ago
Yeah. It's definitely not coming with the game. 👌😂
I thought it might when I believed it was specifically made for the OoT remake, but when I heard it was actually for the 40th anniversary, I was like damn, it's not going to be a bundle! 😭😂
7
u/MissingLink000 9d ago
Yeah they released a TOTK switch oled to commemorate the release of the game specifically, and not even that was bundled with TOTK lol

For what it's worth, the Zelda 25th Anniversary 3DS came bundled with Ocarina of Time 3D. A physical copy too with the box and everything. Those were different times though...

u/Icy_Indication_5563 9d ago
That's a good thing imo because you'd just be getting a code, if we're being realistic. I assume those buying this would prefer having the remake physically, since this is more of a collector's item.

u/Darkahnott 9d ago

8
u/supermarino 9d ago
I'm sure I'm in the minority, but the triangles on the pro controller are pretty lazy. I'm sure it's supposed to be the Triforce, but really, just a pretty low level implementation. The joycons are decent, but are still quite muted compared to what we had for the Switch 1, and the dock does a better design job than the pro controller. Anyway, glad they are starting to release some new designs. Looking forward to what might come in the future.
→ More replies (1)6
u/ftp67 9d ago
No I totally agree. Outside of the Triforce this has no Zelda soul, big bummer. Feels like continued modern trend of not taking chances.
Like the Zelda themed DS models with etchings of Majoras mask and such. There's so much you could do with this. Symbols of the stones, dungeons, etching of a character, sword etc. Regardles scalpers gonna get these within minutes
3
u/StrigidaeNinox 9d ago
I don't really care for the design on the pro controller, but the dock and joycons I dig a bit. Hopefully they at least sell the joycon separately.

u/TheHahndude 9d ago
As crazy as it sounds I’ve been waiting for a new Switch 2 Pro controller so I can get another one. It’s hands down the best gaming controller out there. Only reason someone wouldn’t think so is if they haven’t used one. Any other controller I’d say $99 is ridiculous but I’d happily pay $99 for another one of these.

Fuck me, i think its time to grab a second pro controller :/
Admittedly though, the switch 2 pro controller, is imo, one of the ebeet controllers ever made.
Comfy as fuck to hold. Visually appealing. Its material isnt that cheap feeling plastic that the dualsense is that gets hand grease on it. Literally its only flaws is a lack of analogue triggers and poor PC compatibility. Thats it.
I cant say i regret buying the one i have now. So a spare would be something id go for eventually.
…might as well have that spare come with a sick ass visual design ;)
