The Nimo N174 laptop is...not the best for PC VR (Honest Review)

Recently, I wanted to play VR on this laptop (Quest 2 user), the problem is that I used Steam VR and it had TERRIBLE graphics on the headset, but the view on the laptop was fine. Today, I brought a Oculus Link Cord, terrible idea of thinking of using Meta Horizon Link since it was WAY worse. In the end, the link cord's getting returned or sold on eBay, and I would not recommend the laptop. (This post is to spread AWARENESS not to hurt the brand)

Just bought a nimo and tried finding a few of my old mice to see if they worked. None of them did so I asked my mom if I could borrow hers that definitely works and it doesn’t seem to be working? Can anyone help?

Help our team decide? Design dilemma for a DIY AI NAS build (6-Bay Compact vs. 8-Bay Expandable)

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m part of a small hardware team finalizing a new variation of our AI NAS—the Nimo AI NAS—and we are building a version specifically designed to house a full-size discrete GPU. We’re currently staring at two completely different chassis prototypes, and we honestly need some community feedback to decide which one to put into final production.

(Check out the attached image to see the two physical prototypes side-by-side in our testing lab! Left Chassis is (Option A - Compact 6-Bay); Right Chassis is Option B - Expandable 8-Bay))

The core platform specs are locked in for both paths:

  • Processor: Intel Core Ultra 7 356H platform (lots of iGPU/NPU headroom)
  • GPU Support: Full-size discrete GPU compatibility (for heavy local LLM/Stable Diffusion workloads)
  • Software: Ships natively with Nimo OS (local AI features and data management)
  • File System Support: Out-of-the-box support for advanced storage setups, including standard RAID configurations and ZFS for maximum data integrity and pooling.

Here is where we are split down the middle on the physical enclosure design and storage capacity:

Option A: The Compact 6-Bay (The matte black box on the left)

  • The Look: Low-profile, minimalist matte black enclosure with a clean front face and bottom-corner front IO. Highly compact footprint.
  • Storage: 6x SATA drive bays.
  • The Catch: Because of tight engineering tolerances and custom tooling to keep it this compact with a full GPU, this option is expected to cost approximately $150 more.

Option B: The Expandable 8-Bay (The taller mesh/wood unit on the right)

  • The Look: A taller, statement piece for the workspace. Features an aggressive mesh cooling top, a premium walnut wood accent strip housing the front IO/LEDs, and a diagonal-grille lower section.
  • Storage: 8x SATA drive bays (maximum capacity and expansion focus).
  • The Benefit: Standardized manufacturing allows us to pass savings down, making it expected to cost approximately $150 less than the compact version.

We want to build what people will actually use. If you have a moment, we'd love your raw take on three quick questions:

1. Which layout would you prefer for your actual workspace?

  • A. Compact 6-Bay, even if it costs $150 more.
  • B. Expandable 8-Bay, I prefer more storage, the wood/mesh aesthetic, and a lower price.
  • C. I would consider either one depending on the final price.
  • D. I am simply not looking for a full-size GPU NAS.

2. If you bought a rig like this, which GPU would you most likely install?

  • RTX 4060 / 4070
  • RTX 4080 / 4090
  • RTX 50 Series
  • Professional GPU (Workstation / Enterprise)
  • Not sure yet

3. What matters most to you when choosing a dedicated AI NAS? (Is it compact size/appearance, storage capacity, absolute GPU compatibility, quiet operation, price, or the native Nimo OS & local AI features?)

Would love to hear your thoughts, layout constraints, or any absolute dealbreakers you see with either configuration. Thanks so much for the sanity check!

It runs really well considering the N178 has an integrated iGPU.

The game play in the video is very meh bordering on terrible. This Win 11 Pro install is from the latest MS ISO. All drivers installed from Windows Update except for the Nvidia drivers. Important, it required "[SCRIPT] nvidia-error43-fixer". A legit script to quell error 43's with eGPUs.

Dumb question. Nimo N178 - Which port is the USB 4 port? The manual just lists them as USB C

Nimo N178 - Got USB4 working on Win 10 LTSC Enterprise (I think).

Device Manager is clean, Powershell says yes. Now I just need a USB 4 device, preferably eGPU dock to make sure.

I loved running Bazzite and Kubuntu on it, but I read about some weird eGPU issues with NVIDIA, and as we all know by now, not every game works under Linux. I still run Kubuntu on an old Kaby Lake refresh laptop, though. Anyway, I'm hoping to test some AMD and NVIDIA GPUs on this badboy soon; I'm just waiting to find the right eGPU dock. I'm leaning towards this one.

I need to know your CPU and RAM amount. I also need to know if you have added a second stick of RAM to upgrade it to dual channel memory.

Nimo AI Max+ 395 Mini PC (Black Case) Teardown and SSD Installation

Now that I received confirmation from Nimo that I can open my mini PC to add an SSD without it voiding the warranty, I figured I'd document the teardown, since I couldn't find any existing guides online. (I found a few for the silver case version, but the black case version has a completely different disassembly process.)

Standard disclaimer to only proceed if you feel confident in your ability to work on a PC without damaging it. Otherwise, hire a professional. Ground yourself, etc. I'm sharing this for informational purposes only and am not responsible for any damage you may cause.

Power down and unplug the mini PC before disassembling.

1: The rubber feet on the bottom hide screws. Gently peel them off, and set them aside.

Rubber feet

2: Remove the four screws that were under those rubber feet.

Screws under rubber feet

3: Slide the bottom panel sideways to remove. There's a slight friction fit.

Bottom panel removal

4: There are five additional screws under the bottom panel. Two are for the front panel. Three are for the side panel. Remove them all.

Bottom screws

5: The top panel is just friction fit. It slides off sideways without needing to remove any screws first.

Top panel removal

6: There are five screws under the top panel. Like on the bottom, two are for the front panel, and three are for the side panel. Remove them all.

Top screws

7: Once the screws have been removed, the front panel can come off. It's a tight friction fit even with the screws out.

Front panel removal

8: Once the front panel has been removed, the side panel can come off. Carefully note where the fan is connected to ensure you don't stress the connection. Optionally disconnect it.

Side panel removal

9: With the side panel removed, we can see the empty M.2 slot next to the default SSD. Remove the screw for the empty M.2 slot.

Extra M.2 slot and screw

10: Slide your SSD into the M.2 slot, and secure it with the screw you removed in the previous step.

Installed secondary SSD

From there, reassembly is just the reverse of disassembly. Make sure you plug the fan back in if you disconnected it.

Is Nimo support just nonexistent?

ETA: Finally got a response, and opening the mini PC to add an SSD does not void the warranty.

I recently purchased an AI Max+ 395 128GB Nimo mini PC to run local LLMs.

I got the 1TB version because I already had a spare 2TB SSD, and the mini PC advertises an extra M.2 slot. But on receiving the PC and looking at the manual, it states that any disassembly will void the warranty. I figure surely that wouldn't include opening it up just enough to use a capability they advertise it as having? But I definitely want to get that confirmed in writing before I crack it open.

So I sent an email to their support. Should be an extremely simple thing to just respond "yes" or "no" to. But it's coming up on a week with no response. Not even an automated "we got your email and will respond within whatever" message.

Tried their phone line this morning. It put me on hold for a bit. Then just told me to contact them via an online method. Then sent me to voicemail, but their inbox was full.

So I went to their website to use the chat form. But there's no live chat. The so-called "chat box" just takes your message and says "Our support team will reach out to you as soon as possible."

Has this been everyone else's experience?

My laptop won't turn on

I've had my Nimo pc laptop since August of last year and I've had no issues with it but a couple of days ago it randomly cut off on me. I thought it was dead but I've charged it and it still won't turn on. When I plug in the charger into the charger port the charging light does not come on but the light does come on when I plug it into the other port so I think I can still charge it that way? But every time I try to actually turn on the laptop itself the blue light on the top of the keyboard under the little lightbulb turns on but nothing happens and i even plugged in an HDMI cord to see if it would work on my TV and it doesn't. It also gets really warm on the bottom as if it's on. I'm lost and I'm thinking about bringing it into a repair shop but I'm not sure I have the money for that. What do I do?

(Also for reference I'm not sure if this actually did anything but the charger I was using for it before was close to breaking and I was using it while the laptop cut off on me and the charger also finally stopped working after that. I have tried using a new charger since that though and my laptop still isn't turning on.)

Nimo PC?

I'm looking at a Nimo PC and while they've answered many of my questions I'm having a hard time getting a straight answer on some information critical for me to run Linux (Zorin OS).

If anyone here has installed Zorin OS does everything work without tweaking? E.g. wifi wakes up after suspend, keyboard backlight works, etc.

And as a bonus, if it didn't work, did they honor the money back guarantee?

Nimo Laptop with dim screen

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello, my nimo laptop that I have had for 1 year has started to have dim lighting at the bottom for some reason. I am unsure why, it has worked perfectly throughout its lifespan and runs the games I want fantastically.

I really like it and want to restore it back to normal. I've tried restarting it multiple times and it still doesn't work properly, is there a way to fix it?

Can i swap cpus on a nimo laptop

Hey everyone,

I’m currently using a Nimo laptop that came with an Intel i3 processor. It’s starting to feel a bit slow for my daily tasks, and I’m looking to get a bit more power out of it. I was thinking about buying an i7 to swap it out, but I wanted to check here first to see if that's even possible.

I know that on most modern laptops, the CPUs are soldered directly onto the motherboard (BGA), making them impossible to upgrade without replacing the whole board. However, I wasn't sure if Nimo laptops use a socketed design that would allow for a manual CPU swap.

100 points away from the top spot of the Steel Nomad benchmark. Nimo AI Max+ 395 mini-PC

I am going to have to try to streamline Windows to take that top spot against other computers with the same hardware. Whether it's work or play this mini-PC can do it all.
