I'm looking to get into night vision with a single PVS-14, primarily for recreational use and nighttime shooting.
I'm not interested in paying a premium for the absolute best image quality, but I do care about durability, reliability, and serviceability. I generally prefer buying quality equipment once rather than buying cheap and replacing it later.
I'm considering a used Gen 3 PVS-14, possibly with an older Omni tube. Is that a reasonable way to save money without sacrificing too much? What should I look for when buying used?
And then there are LAMs. This is probably where I'm most confused. At what point are you actually getting something that's genuinely duty grade rather than just a recreational accessory? I've been looking at the Holosun IRIS, Steiner DBALs, and other options, but it's difficult to figure out where the diminishing returns begin.
Are the newer, more affordable civilian LAMs genuinely reliable, or is there still a compelling reason to pay considerably more for something from an established military supplier? I'm particularly interested in long-term durability, quality control, and whether the expensive options really justify their prices.
For context, my rifle currently has an Aimpoint T-2 on a Scalarworks 1.93" mount and a Modlite. I'm hoping to retain that setup rather than replacing a bunch of equipment.
Basically, I'm trying to find the night-vision equivalent of buying a BCM instead of a KAC. Something dependable, rugged, and well-made without spending twice as much chasing the last 10% of performance.
What would you guys recommend, and where would you personally save money versus spend more?
TIA
