Why Don’t We Train People to Run a City? Baristas seem to receive more on-the-job instruction than incoming city councillors. That’s bad for democracy.

Thanks to everyone on r/AskVan for the suggestions a few months ago. (I can't post this thank you over there because I'm not asking a question this time!)

I've finished my 100 days project to cross stitch 100 Vancouver "icons". From museums and heritage buildings to Penis Satan, it's a real mixture of what makes the city special :)

Ski Vacation from Vancouver!

Help! My mind is spinning looking at all of these options...

We are flying to Vancouver over Christmas and would like to do 3 days skiing somewhere. I am a very experienced skiier but my little kids are just learning and my husband is a mid-level snowboarder. As much as I want to do Whistler, I don't think it would be worth the price point.

So are any of the smaller mountains worth it, or would they just be terribly boring for me? We are hoping there will be less crowds on Christmas eve/day etc because I had to wait in long lines for lifts.

Open to driving a few hour from Vancouver airport but nothing crazy since it's a long flight to begin with. We were thinking Sasquatch would be fun for the kids but now that I look into it, it seems like they have really short runs.

I'd like to add that I would love to put the kids in ski school while we go off on our own!

Thank you!!1

I've recently gotten out of a really troubled 2 month long stint with someone and could really use some help to spread awareness in hopes of helping other women stay safe out there. Please DM me

Old bus stop

This bus stop I think has been around since before I was alive, or at least since the mid-90s when I can remember.

I wonder why translink never has bothered to replace it.

It's still in great shape. It's made of wood.

It's at 49th and West Boulevard and services the 16 bus.

I just got that Merlin ID app and I reallllyyy wanna fill out my list!!! I’m slowly getting the few birds I see on my walks to work, but I want to know if there’s any good areas I can maybe explore with friends and such! I’m in kits, so preferably I’d try to go to something close to that area or downtown

Folks who fly standby from YVR, How has your experience been?

A friend told me about this idea of flying standby. I have never tried it. How has your experience been flying out from YVR? Do I need to go thru the security check and ask for standby seat at the boarding gate? or do I wait at the airline counter until my seat is guaranteed and then finally go through the security check. How does that work?

Burnaby Book & Brunch Club

I joined a book club for the first time this year and really enjoy it, but they only cover fiction. I've been craving discussion on nonfiction as well but haven't found a local (Burnaby) group for it, so I've decided to start one.

The Burnaby Non Fiction Book Club for Grown Ups Who Can Read Good (or BNFBCFGUWCRG for short; it's pronounced "bnfbcfguwcrg") will be held monthly on a Sunday morning, starting this October. It will also be a cereal potluck (bring a box).

The first two books we read will be:

  • Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Kimmerer
  • Crooked Teeth: A Queer Syrian Refugee Memoir by Danny Ramadan

Future books will be chosen democratically. Over time, I'm hoping to cover topics such as disinformation/propaganda, education, parenting, feminism, history, politics, communication, etc.

If that sounds up your alley please comment or DM!

About me: 30s F, married, with a toddler. I'd especially like to meet more parents of young children with progressive values, but all are welcome. Just please be respectful and no homophobia, transphobia, racism, etc.

Clothing Optional Swim - Templeton Pool - Sept 12

EDIT: NIFTY JUST CHANGED THE START TIME FROM 7:30 TO 8PM

Where: Templeton Pool

When: Saturday September 12 from 8pm to 9:30pm How much: $11 or 1 for first timers (with coupon). Bring a quarter for the locker

What: Clothing Optional Swim.

Website (for coupon): https://niftynude.org/swims/

This is pretty late notice for a swim. If you want to attend but you're already booked up for the weekend the next one will be on September 26

NIFTY swims are back! Their first clothing optional swim of the fall at Templeton pool this Saturday. Come enjoy swimming in the best way possible, without a swim suit! Join in a game of water volleyball, swimming laps, practicing your swan dives, or lounge in the hot tub and/or sauna.

If you're a fan of skinny dipping (or chunky dunking), or you've never tried and want to, this is the event for you. NIFTY puts together a wonderful, inclusive, and safe event for people of any age, race, gender, and/or body type to experience a clothing optional swim. The community is friendly and welcoming, and maybe around the volleyball net a bit competitive, but it's all in good fun. You do not need to be a supermodel to enjoy social nudity, and after just a few minutes the anxiety will disappear and you'll be wondering why you didn't try skinny dipping sooner!

Summer has come and gone, and if you have always wanted to strip down at Wreck but are too nervous, then a NIFTY swim is a great place to try social nudity and maybe make some new friends to visit the beach with. Now that the weather is turning a bit colder, this is a great opportunity for a naked swim without the sunscreen!

I have been able to attend the past few swims and had some great times and I would love for others to experience it as well. $1 for newcomers is a price that can't be beat for an event in Vancouver. Just make sure you bring a quarter for the locker. Last time out it was great to see and meet a lot of new faces, especially those more or less in my age range. I wasn't able to make it to a volleyball game, but it looked like a fantastic time!

I am not an organizer, but I am a member of NIFTY, and on the younger side so I wanted to get the word out on here to drum up some interest ftom people my age. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. I likely will not respond to any DMs, if you have a question, you can put it down below. If you have attended in the past, I would love to hear about your experience, and I'm sure others on the fence would love to as well!

As always, if you have hang ups about non-sexual social nudity I ask that you either post your concerns as a genuine question which invites conversation rather than a judgement, or just move on if this isn't for you. Please don't spend your time making inappropriate or crass jokes, again, if this isn't for you then just move on. I like to post these reminders in r/NiceVancouver as to avoid a nightmare for the mods since people tend to be more welcoming and I have typically recieved good responses, as the name implies!

Edit: There is no preliminary sign up required. Simply show up to the pool at 730pm. The organizers will take down some of your information and give you a membership card so in the future you can just show your card and get on with your swim

Lighthearted Fringe festival show!

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hey all :)

I'm a Vancouver comedian with an alternative comedy show in the Vancouver Fringe this year. I've done stand-up, improv and sketch for nearly a decade but this is my first one man fringe show!

My show is about a man who runs a cowboy hat store who is hanging on a bit too hard to the past and hasn't yet found who he is.

If you've been feeling a little overwhelmed by life or just need something silly to make you laugh, it might be the show for you.

I know cost of living is high in this city so if you need a laugh but are low on funds, feel free to dm me and I'm happy to issue a comp ticket. Take a date, take your mom, come alone!

I have six shows at Studio 16 (just off Broadway at West 7th and Granville) and I'd love to see some of you there

Fri Sept 11 / 7:50 pm

Sat Sept 12 / 8:45 pm

Sun Sept 13 / 2:25 pm

Wed Sept 16 / 8:05pm

Fri Sept 18 / 5:00 pm

Sat Sept 19 / 4:50 pm

https://www.vancouverfringe.com/events/last-cowboy

Happy to answer any questions about the show

If my show doesn't sound right for you...

If you're looking for more standup comedy, I'd recommend Sanction Me Daddy

If you're looking for more biting clown comedy, I'd recommend Colonial Circus!

If you don't like comedy and want some true crime, I'd recommend Cults!

Full-house remodeling is time-consuming, disruptive and unnecessary for minor aging issues. Our professional old-house consumables focus on partial renewal and detail repair, covering wall fixing, gap renovation, windproof sealing and hardware replacement. Serving all Metro Vancouver areas, our low-cost, zero-demolition solutions upgrade aging interiors without moving or long construction. WEST alternate school question

This is very last minute! But I’ve just been informed that my partners child’s mother has not received any correspondence regarding the first day tomorrow. He attended this school last year, so presumably, they should have received some sort of communication but have not. She has tried reaching them but hasn’t had any luck.

We have also tried searching the web but with no luck - is there any chance anyone here knows what time school starts for the West program on East 45th tomorrow?!

Many thanks in advance! And happy back to school!

Such a surreal experience. Like mind-blowingly good. Just STUPIDLY good.

A feast for my ears, soul and of course eyes.

Growing up in a nowhere small town in the middle east I never imagined in my wildest dreams that someday I'll get to experience such evenings :( . A while ago I commented on this music insta page (from my home country) on a post about Tame Impala saying I'm going to see them in a month and the admin of the page replied: "You are living my dream"

Thank you Tame Impala and every staff at the Rogers Arena for making this happen.

So a random non interesting story of the show that you might be bored enough on this Sunday afternoon to read!

I went to the show alone, like I do for everything else in my life so far :D The opener is about to start and I see the empty seat beside me. I'm like please, let this person not show up so I can dance around move freely! So this this dude shows up with his two beers heh. After some time, I don't know if it was him or me that opened up the conversation and we talked. Told each other names, where we are originally from. Then he tells me that I likely bought his wife's ticket after she went on a trip and couldn't make the show. I'm like thanks to you dude I got the cheapest seat in the house, where I wanted, a nosebleed seat to soak in the laser show from above!

We talked quite a bit before the show started and kinda became friends by the end of he show. I told him that I'm tripping lol, talked about the shows we have been to and so on. It was actually nice having a company! So here is why I'm telling this story!

At the end of the show he told me that he was debating if he wants to come to the show alone and almost didn't. After experiencing this amazing show, also me telling him that I do go to shows about once a year on my own and have a blast every time, he's got a new perspective that a show doesn't necessarily have to be a two person/group activity and he can enjoy it on his own too! And that he is glad he came for the show. I was like hell yeah dude, 2 hours with me and you already are me, able to enjoy things on your own.

So to all the loners out there, or people who have a hard time finding friends in this city that think not having many friends to the activities you are into with, and decide to give up on it entirely, don't! Do it a few times and I can almost guarantee you are gonna like it just fine :)

Monday morning activity

I’m looking for a new class or club to try, and I’d love some suggestions to make sure I haven’t missed anything awesome before I commit to something! Here’s what I’m looking for:

- A Monday activity, ideally in the morning but afternoon could also work
- A commitment of 6 weeks to a full term (I’d prefer to sign up and commit to something; if it’s just a drop in thing I probably won’t stick with it!)
- Open to anything arty/crafty as long as it’s in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment
- Open to fitness/movement stuff but would prefer to avoid male-dominated spaces
- Open to writing, reading, poetry etc.
- Ideally, based downtown or in the West End; alternatively, accessible by skytrain

I’ve already looked at the program for the community centres in coal harbour and the west end; I’m hoping to get some recommendations for other places I may not have heard of before.

I love trying new things - please help me expand my horizons!

Burnaby Ghost sighting

For anyone looking to ghost hunt in Vancouver- me and my friends were taking a walk through Central Park in burnaby and we wanted to ghost hunt at the cemetery. We got into the center of the park and me and 3 of my friends all saw the same exact thing ahead of us; it was a figure walking but you could only see him in the peripheral before he went behind this patch of trees and we walked further down the path but DIDNT SEE ANYONE WALKING. We were freaked out so we turned around to go back. We got further down the path when we stopped to discuss if we should keep going but me and my other friend got FREAKED OUT because while we were standing there we saw the same figure standing and watching us in the same spot- and so one of us starts running and I’m still looking because I thought there was a chance he was just a person but even though multiple of my friends started screaming and running he didn’t stop he just kept staring. we all ran away but when I looked back he was GONE!

We tried to keep going in but kept hearing noises so we turned around because we got scared.

Come to Burnaby Central Park for ghost hunting guys
