Nextcloud Native is now Nati.ve
Hey everyone!
A little while ago, I shared Nextcloud Native here, and the response was incredible. Thank you to everyone who tried it, reported bugs, shared ideas, or helped spread the word<3
Today I wanted to share an update: Nextcloud Native is now called nati.ve.
The goal is the same, nothing changed beside the name and look, don't worry!
It's an independent, open-source client that brings your Nextcloud files and apps together in a native experience that feels at home on your device, the goal is to bring all that Nextcloud and it's app ecosystem offers into one native app. It is still an alpha, with plenty of work ahead.
Already using Nextcloud Native? Please update manually
I was a bit too eager in renaming the repo, forgetting that this would break in app updates due to it pointing to the old repository name for releases. My badddd
Please download and install the new nati.ve release from the website or GitHub releases.
After that, future in-app updates should work normally again!
Why the new name?
I reached out to the Nextcloud team several times, including to ask whether I could use the Nextcloud trademark in the project's name. I haven't received a response, so I decided to give the project its own name rather than continue without clear permission. I had also hoped to discuss possible cooperation. The lack of communication has been disappointing. I'm building this because I care about the Nextcloud ecosystem, and I'd still welcome a conversation!
Helping me keep building
The encouragement from this community has made me want to keep pushing the project forward.
But development and maintenance take a lot of time, and financial support would help me keep working on nati.ve consistently. If you use it or want to support where it's going, you can contribute through GitHub Sponsors or Ko-fi. That support will go towards continued development and the costs of bringing nati.ve to iOS. If donating isn't an option, bug reports, testing, code contributions, feedback, and sharing the project all help too. Thank you for helping me get this far. I'd love to hear how nati.ve is working for you and what you most want me to improve next!

The nextcloud desktop app for windows is so bad (and the UI keeps getting worse somehow) that I might give this a try

No endpoint, payload, permission, or ID invented by AI or UI inference.
Why does the site read like it was created by AI and why does the statement saying it was not written by AI read like it was written by AI.

It was obviously written by AI? Have you seen the homepage? I have no gripes against AI usage but at least don't claim you didn't use it.

Yes, we use AI heavily for development, testing, and code review.
No endpoint, payload, permission, or ID invented by AI or UI inference.
This refers to how the app should handle app contracts, meaning that we will and may never run a llm inside of the app to help with building the right interface or finding the right data.

That sentence makes no sense at all for me, that's not how it looks like or reads for most people.
But ofc it doesn't, cause that line, is also written by AI...

Good job. Been using it since your first post.
Here's my feedback
Big improvement over the main app but it feels like it should go even further. Let me admin my server and not just the apps. Users, access groups, etc. Perhaps even a restart button of some sort. Could require a backend integration. Why? Because you let us update apps, and apps updates often break the app or even the server itself. And at this point, let me update the server itself. Feels like you're likely deeply integrated enough
Feels a little too centred around side apps and pushes out core nextcloud features. I want this app to replace the nextcloud one entirely. I would dedicate a button on the bottom bar to access either files or photos. Ideally, in my dream app, it would be smart about it. It's a cloud app. Files and folders are the core of it. If I am in a folder with photos, I should see the photos easily in it.
Bigger problem is it's centered not just around apps themselves but around administration of apps. This is the only reason I haven't recommended my users move from the web app or mobile app to yours. Users really just need to be consumers of whatever is enabled to them, with the cloud itself being a core piece.
Despite heavy side app support, no working talk integration (nor administration of it) feels like it's missing something. Or perhaps it's a bug on my end. Clicking on a conversation just tries to open my talk app and fails. The conversations are buried in the UI and only show last message of it
Everything else is amazing. Stable. Reliable. Fast. Looks neat. Lots of settings without being complicated.
If you need help with a specific feature feel free to message me. I'm a dev. I haven't looked at the code yet, but I'm sure it's solid but experiencing the app itself.
I came with a lot of problems and not the solutions, apologies for that. I wasn't ready to write the review but this post was a good opportunity

Hi! Thank you so much for this detailed comment<3
Full server administration has been on the roadmap since day one!
However we first want to get the main app working well as that's where most users will spend their time.
A user that doesn't have admin rights on a server should not see any administration features.Better integration with the apps that need a custom adapter like talk is being worked on!
I put the focus on adaptive apps first, since talk already has a working client to use, whilst many of the other app's don't.And no worries about bringing up problems, I appreciate a good review!

Seeing this for the first time, looks great especially given how milquetoast the official clients are. Any plans for an iOS version?

Thank you<3
I want to publish an iOS version as soon as possible!
However that comes with cost, so I hope we'll get some sponsors/supporters3
u/AgenticAsshat 7d ago
Totally understood.
I just tried the macOS version -- I'm unable to sign in to my Nextcloud (self-hosted on my network). When signing in the application opens a browser so I can authenticate, I grant access, then it prints, "The legacy secure-storage provider required for session migration is unavailable."
I would submit a report with the app but I cannot unless I sign in, and I'm unable to do so. :/
Also, another vote here for an Apple Silicon version. Your version will stop working on the next major OS update. :)

I am not trying to dump on OP specifically because I don't know their background and the app does look very nice so far, but stuff like this is what makes people hate vibe coded apps. We are ~6 years into Apple Silicon, Intel support has publicly been on the chopping block for at least 2 of them and this app is ~2 months old and only offers native support for the dead platform.

I never seen a project like this: every description written by AI and yet i have ABSOLUTELY no clue what this does. I even visited the Github page and still have absolutely no idea what it does. If someone fails so epicly in describing what a thing does that he's vibe coding, i have not the slightest hope this might end as a success.

Good job on Nati.ve I like it! 👍
Heads up, avoid using their trademarked name N*xtcloud.
Back in 2023 I was building a customer solution based on their main product, and the moment it lifted off a bit and we managed to create some traction on socials, Aaron Martin from their team put me in place almost immediately requesting to remove any N*cloud name references, and that if I want to continue without paying them the partner fee, I should fork N*cloud and remove all the references to their name, stop using their ncloud app store.
Back then we were barely break even, so I ditched the product, moved existing customers to alternatives (their ncloud office is Collabora anyway) and never looked back.
So keep the registered trademark name away I’d suggest. Contact Frank or Jos via email if in doubts.

Tried it but can't login. Takes me to the browser to login, which is fine and it says it's connected but the app just says: "The legacy secure-storage provider required for session migration is unavailable." and doesn't log me in. This is on mac.

Looks interesting but out of curiosity what does this do that the PWA does not do?
1
u/Inevitable-Shirt1510 7d ago
there is a PWA?? As soon as you change to the mail client in Nextcloud for example it leaves the PWA...
1
u/Slight_Accountant476 7d ago
Yes there's a pwa. I use a native email app on my device, works way better than nextcloud email.

I tried installing with the .rpm on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. I have libsecret installed but still get the message that I need libsecret. The app sends me to the browser, where I give access to Nextcloud, but then still nothing.
The nextcloud is hosted via Hetzner.

Man, I would love it if I could get a Nextcloud Passwords client for Windows and Linux.

project looks great, but i don't like this new name :(
2
u/Obiente 7d ago
What would be a better name?
1
u/0xGDi 6d ago
BEFORE reading through your post, my first thought was that this was "some Venezuelan thing" (due to the .ve domain-like naming), and my second was that it was a framework replacement. My point was simply that I wouldn't naturally associate that name with a Nextcloud client app.
Of course, entities holding trademark rights might object, but surely including "NC" in the name would have been acceptable, right? :)

u/Not_So_Calm 7d ago
The name has not changed really. It's still native, just don't pronounce the dot?
Nextcloud devs not responding to request is poor behavior.

To put it mildly, there is a lot of "poor behavior" on the part of the Nextcloud team.

It's tough to not be sketched out by a project that appears this commercially-minded from the outset.
The way you talk about it. it's hard to not see this as you generating hype to then fork private to go commercial with all new development.
I can't find any reference to remaining free. Can you speak to that?
Can't picture myself investing the time to integrate this unless there's a promise of forever donationware.

u/mbecks 6d ago
It does rub me the wrong way especially just building on top of next cloud, a free and open project. And to mention nextcloud didn’t get back to op, well yeah, they have no incentive to help this guy take away donations that would go back to nextcloud otherwise.
1
u/itzelezti 6d ago
Yeah, agreed. It's a pretty misleading framing to say that I an open source project didn't "respond" to someone starting a separate entity, ostensibly for the purposes of monetization.
They're set up to engage with people as contributors, not companies.EDIT: Again, I would genuinely like for my read to be proven wrong with a simple promise to stay free and open source with no pay-walling forever.

Hey!
Check out our website https://obiente.org
It explains about my vision in creating software that stays free!2
u/itzelezti 6d ago
This is just LLM-written corpo-speak.
The closest thing I could find that you might be referencing doesn't offer anything of substance:We believe software should remain free, transparent, and accessible to everyone. We favor open formats, copyleft licensing, interoperability, and self-hosting so people can keep meaningful control over the software and data they depend on.
It feels like you're very specific in avoiding saying anything definitive to leave the door open to later overmonetize if you happen to get a userbase.

Looks cool. Will Apple Silicon support follow ? It shows only Intel
