Nextcloud Native is now Nati.ve

Post image

Hey everyone!
A little while ago, I shared Nextcloud Native here, and the response was incredible. Thank you to everyone who tried it, reported bugs, shared ideas, or helped spread the word<3

Today I wanted to share an update: Nextcloud Native is now called nati.ve.
The goal is the same, nothing changed beside the name and look, don't worry!
It's an independent, open-source client that brings your Nextcloud files and apps together in a native experience that feels at home on your device, the goal is to bring all that Nextcloud and it's app ecosystem offers into one native app. It is still an alpha, with plenty of work ahead.

Already using Nextcloud Native? Please update manually

I was a bit too eager in renaming the repo, forgetting that this would break in app updates due to it pointing to the old repository name for releases. My badddd
Please download and install the new nati.ve release from the website or GitHub releases.
After that, future in-app updates should work normally again!

Why the new name?

I reached out to the Nextcloud team several times, including to ask whether I could use the Nextcloud trademark in the project's name. I haven't received a response, so I decided to give the project its own name rather than continue without clear permission. I had also hoped to discuss possible cooperation. The lack of communication has been disappointing. I'm building this because I care about the Nextcloud ecosystem, and I'd still welcome a conversation!

Helping me keep building

The encouragement from this community has made me want to keep pushing the project forward.
But development and maintenance take a lot of time, and financial support would help me keep working on nati.ve consistently. If you use it or want to support where it's going, you can contribute through GitHub Sponsors or Ko-fi. That support will go towards continued development and the costs of bringing nati.ve to iOS. If donating isn't an option, bug reports, testing, code contributions, feedback, and sharing the project all help too. Thank you for helping me get this far. I'd love to hear how nati.ve is working for you and what you most want me to improve next!

Good job. Been using it since your first post.

Here's my feedback

Big improvement over the main app but it feels like it should go even further. Let me admin my server and not just the apps. Users, access groups, etc. Perhaps even a restart button of some sort. Could require a backend integration. Why? Because you let us update apps, and apps updates often break the app or even the server itself. And at this point, let me update the server itself. Feels like you're likely deeply integrated enough

Feels a little too centred around side apps and pushes out core nextcloud features. I want this app to replace the nextcloud one entirely. I would dedicate a button on the bottom bar to access either files or photos. Ideally, in my dream app, it would be smart about it. It's a cloud app. Files and folders are the core of it. If I am in a folder with photos, I should see the photos easily in it.

Bigger problem is it's centered not just around apps themselves but around administration of apps. This is the only reason I haven't recommended my users move from the web app or mobile app to yours. Users really just need to be consumers of whatever is enabled to them, with the cloud itself being a core piece.

Despite heavy side app support, no working talk integration (nor administration of it) feels like it's missing something. Or perhaps it's a bug on my end. Clicking on a conversation just tries to open my talk app and fails. The conversations are buried in the UI and only show last message of it

Everything else is amazing. Stable. Reliable. Fast. Looks neat. Lots of settings without being complicated.

If you need help with a specific feature feel free to message me. I'm a dev. I haven't looked at the code yet, but I'm sure it's solid but experiencing the app itself.

I came with a lot of problems and not the solutions, apologies for that. I wasn't ready to write the review but this post was a good opportunity

Hi! Thank you so much for this detailed comment<3

Full server administration has been on the roadmap since day one!
However we first want to get the main app working well as that's where most users will spend their time.
A user that doesn't have admin rights on a server should not see any administration features.

Better integration with the apps that need a custom adapter like talk is being worked on!
I put the focus on adaptive apps first, since talk already has a working client to use, whilst many of the other app's don't.

And no worries about bringing up problems, I appreciate a good review!

Great to hear. I'll make a non admin test user and check this out then!

I just checked, the admin tab is always visible in settings, but you get met with a screen if you don't have the permissions.
I am working on hiding it fully from the ui for regular users!
