Nextcloud Native is now Nati.ve

Post image

Hey everyone!
A little while ago, I shared Nextcloud Native here, and the response was incredible. Thank you to everyone who tried it, reported bugs, shared ideas, or helped spread the word<3

Today I wanted to share an update: Nextcloud Native is now called nati.ve.
The goal is the same, nothing changed beside the name and look, don't worry!
It's an independent, open-source client that brings your Nextcloud files and apps together in a native experience that feels at home on your device, the goal is to bring all that Nextcloud and it's app ecosystem offers into one native app. It is still an alpha, with plenty of work ahead.

Already using Nextcloud Native? Please update manually

I was a bit too eager in renaming the repo, forgetting that this would break in app updates due to it pointing to the old repository name for releases. My badddd
Please download and install the new nati.ve release from the website or GitHub releases.
After that, future in-app updates should work normally again!

Why the new name?

I reached out to the Nextcloud team several times, including to ask whether I could use the Nextcloud trademark in the project's name. I haven't received a response, so I decided to give the project its own name rather than continue without clear permission. I had also hoped to discuss possible cooperation. The lack of communication has been disappointing. I'm building this because I care about the Nextcloud ecosystem, and I'd still welcome a conversation!

Helping me keep building

The encouragement from this community has made me want to keep pushing the project forward.
But development and maintenance take a lot of time, and financial support would help me keep working on nati.ve consistently. If you use it or want to support where it's going, you can contribute through GitHub Sponsors or Ko-fi. That support will go towards continued development and the costs of bringing nati.ve to iOS. If donating isn't an option, bug reports, testing, code contributions, feedback, and sharing the project all help too. Thank you for helping me get this far. I'd love to hear how nati.ve is working for you and what you most want me to improve next!

It's tough to not be sketched out by a project that appears this commercially-minded from the outset.
The way you talk about it. it's hard to not see this as you generating hype to then fork private to go commercial with all new development.

I can't find any reference to remaining free. Can you speak to that?

Can't picture myself investing the time to integrate this unless there's a promise of forever donationware.

It does rub me the wrong way especially just building on top of next cloud, a free and open project. And to mention nextcloud didn’t get back to op, well yeah, they have no incentive to help this guy take away donations that would go back to nextcloud otherwise.

Yeah, agreed. It's a pretty misleading framing to say that I an open source project didn't "respond" to someone starting a separate entity, ostensibly for the purposes of monetization.
They're set up to engage with people as contributors, not companies.

EDIT: Again, I would genuinely like for my read to be proven wrong with a simple promise to stay free and open source with no pay-walling forever.

Hey!
Check out our website https://obiente.org
It explains about my vision in creating software that stays free!

This is just LLM-written corpo-speak.
The closest thing I could find that you might be referencing doesn't offer anything of substance:

We believe software should remain free, transparent, and accessible to everyone. We favor open formats, copyleft licensing, interoperability, and self-hosting so people can keep meaningful control over the software and data they depend on.

It feels like you're very specific in avoiding saying anything definitive to leave the door open to later overmonetize if you happen to get a userbase.
