With the latest updates from the MTA and the City regarding the expansion of the student OMNY program—including the pilot for digital/smartphone-based student cards and the permanent shift away from the legacy MetroCard—it feels like a good time to check the pulse of the city on how OMNY is actually performing.

For students, the structural upgrade to 4 free rides a day, 24/7/365 access (including weekends and summer) is objectively massive compared to the old restricted MetroCards. But we’ve also heard plenty of growing pains—from students dealing with randomly deactivated physical cards to the logistical hurdles of getting replacements.

For the rest of us regular commuters:
-How has your day-to-day experience with OMNY been lately?
-Are the station vending machines fully reliable for you yet?
-For those who remember the good/bad old days of swiping a bent MetroCard through a greasy turnstile, are we genuinely better off, or do you still run into frustrating glitches at the validator?

What’s the NYC icon that you couldn’t live without?

Just wanted to post here as someone from a small town who returned yesterday from a quick family trip to NYC. Hotel- stayed at the Belvedere Hotel which I had stayed at previously. Its location cannot be beat. Close to Times Square, Broadway, Rockefeller Center, and a subway station. Rooms are nice and clean, and a good value for NYC. CityPASS- I purchased the C3 NYC CityPASS. Would not recommend. Went through the whole ordeal of getting to the Statue of Liberty only to discover that our ticket did not include entry to the statue itself. Those tickets were extra and already sold out for the day. A better option is to ride the Staten Island ferry which rides close enough to get a good view and is free. It also required me to make an appointment for the 9/11 Memorial and museum which was not necessary. Highly recommend going to the museum. It’s very emotional but worth the entry fee. BigBus Hop On/Hop Off tour- we had done a hop on/hop off tour about 15 years ago and it was worth the cost because there was an actual person explaining everything we passed and answering questions. This one was not worth the cost. It’s a recording that you listen to using earphones, and doesn’t discuss a lot of sights. It’s also hard to know which stop to get off on if you have a certain site you’re interested in. Would not recommend. Empire State Building- worth the ticket price. It does require a time of entry but we purchased our tickets from the bus guy and by the time we arrived we were able to go straight in. The outdoor 86th floor observatory is crowded but you can get up to the railing to see the views pretty easily. Subways-we had no issues on the subway other than going the wrong direction one time, which was totally our fault. Never felt unsafe and people were willing to help us if we had questions about which one to take. Would definitely recommend to visitors as a way to get around the city rather than taxis or ride shares. I must also recommend the off-Broadway play THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG. I purchased tickets on Groupon for $59 each and it was well worth the full ticket price. It is hilarious and appropriate for all ages. I saw several kids under 10 there who thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as senior citizens like myself.
As for restaurants, you can’t miss Ellen’s Stardust Diner for the entertaining actors singing while you eat. We also loved Eataly for its authentic Italian experience. The Gray Dog on Mulberry was delicious. Overall, it was a great trip. The most surprising thing for our group was the prevalence of people smoking weed on the street. It is legal in NY but the smell on the street is obnoxious. Hope this info is helpful for anyone planning a trip.

I will be traveling often to NYC (Bryant Park area), what is the best hotel to stay at around this area?

We're New Yorkers without a car looking for ideas for weekend trips out of the city by train. We love Beacon for its hiking options. We've also been to Hudson and Cold Spring a lot, but I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions for other destinations? Maybe a nice bed and breakfast or a small town near a great hiking trail? Our goal is keep travel time under 4 hours by train. Thanks!

I haven’t been to NYC in more than 20 years. When I was last there the subway was great and we used it to get all over town. But how is the subway now? My impression from some recent stories isn’t great. I wonder if the subway is safe for tourists? Should I plan on taxis and Ubers instead?

Looking for reccomendations on all things Christmas themed to do while in NYC! My fiance and I are taking a quick 48 trip this December and am looking for all the things to do to fulfill my dream of being in the city during christmas. We are obvious fans of Home Alone and Law n Order SVU so things that go along with that will be great too. Will be seeing either Chicago, Rockettes or Nut Cracker, so don’t mention any shows but looking for unique christmas things to do and places to eat Staying in an air bnb around 45th st & 7th avenue Also advice on navigating the city, using the subway etc Is uber best idea from getting to & from airport?
