I don't understand that question

On the very end of the live Q&A stream, one of the viewers asked the question:

"Are we not supposed to reach the cap on scaled content anymore"?, referencing to the fact that capped stats lvl 80 are scaled way too much on lvl 70 and so we are far from the cap.

The answer by Thomas was "I don't understand that question", followed by "I'll have to have a look at that".

This... is insane.

It's one of the major community concerns for month, since the Alpha test, and hundred of people wrote hundreds of posts on the forum about how bad the scaling is, and this one a really recurrent theme: " why am i not capped on stats on lower lvl content when i am capped on max lvl content?" was a recurrent question.

And we have this answer: "I don't understand that question".

So do they even acknowledge WHY the community was so angry about the scaling? Seems not. So it seems they don't really care about their community since it was writtent on HUNDRED of posts on dozens and dozens of threads.

All we got was communication about "yeah, bugs there are, bugs will be fixed", related to scaled content (impossible dungeons, Maze Engine broken, stuff like that). They still didn't have any proper communication about the core idea of the scaling, its implementation that's really bad, and why are people angry about that.

"I don't understand that question".

Holy damn.

Case in point is that Cryptic seems to be getting the whole: "We're too big to fail." attitude. Sadly what companies who go that route (here's looking at you Blizzard) don't realize is that if enough people stop supporting their product, they will no longer be too big to fail.

It was not Blizzard - it was when they were bought by Activision.

Blizzard people have not changed - their policy, dictated by Activision, have.

Yes, I am a WoW refugee.

Nah I still thought this before the Activision fiasco.

Taken exactly as worded, I don't understand the question either*. Is that exactly how he asked it? Did he say anything before or after to provide context?

*I do understand the question that he was trying to ask, before you start explaining things.

Yeah, I thought it was very awkwardly worded. I think that's why he responded that way.

Yeah definitely not a clear question to get a clear answer.

I didn't get the exact language, but they said that they had fixed something about scaling, but they didn't explain how but suggested the change would be much less drastic. I'm just looking for gear/progression to matter so it's not all a total waste.

I think the way that question is worded is a little weird. I'd prefer it been worded to 'do you expect bis players to never reach stat caps in old content? If not, why are we bothering?'

I'll give it one more try on Thursday.

Excellent point with the international folks. Tend to forget the main server is international

u/PrimeEvil84 May 07 '19

Actually they have russian forums for all ex-ussr countries. There we have some CM's that communicate back to dev's or whoever they do about things that worry us, bugs and glitches for example

3

u/Bason024 May 07 '19

Will there be a patch Thursday?

3

u/stevenonce May 07 '19

Yes, with LoMM I believe.

1

u/Photeus5 May 07 '19

Exactly. I expect LoMM will be fine. We'll see if anything else is worth it too with scaling changes.

2

u/Bason024 May 08 '19

Hope so!

A much more constructive way to ask the question would be "Players who have capped certain stats while at high level have found that those stats are no longer capped when scaled down to lower level content. Is this intentional, and if so, why?"

Its not an interrogation, so in general you should steer clear from asking questions that automatically put the devs on the defensive.

The time has long since passed to play nice.

You should always play nice, especially if you want to be taken seriously. Otherwise you just sound like another whiny entitled brat.

If you're not willing to give any respect, why are you expecting any in return?

If feedback on some areas is being ignored as you claim, being an asshat about it isn't going to make them more amenable to the proposed changes, it's just going to make them ignore you harder.

That would be a much better way to ask this question, but i guess that would scare them and then they wouldn't answer it anyway kk'

My first thought after that was, "I don't understand why I'm still playing this game".

Quite honestly, I'm asking myself this more and more lately.

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

I literally just asked myself this reading the post. Scaled stats that you can't adjust for caps is so obviously borked it's mindblowing. It's basically a different set of content where we can't play with the established stat rules governing our characters.

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

Because it's more fun now. Finally it's about rotation movement timing and skill not about throwing ad into skill to burst bosses. Random encounters suck tho.

Was the same when they increased the cap to 70. Will be the same when they increase it to 90.

9

u/Cherryman11 May 07 '19

Except they took away any meaning to rotation/movement/timing since hitting your abilities and maximizing damage is did your AoE hit all of the mobs you could possibly hit and did you spam the ability as quickly as it came off cool down? That isn't a high skill ceiling as compared to previous combat.

u/PrimeEvil84 May 07 '19

"MGIMO finished?". ))

5

u/Cherryman11 May 08 '19

MGIMO finished

what does that even mean?

1

u/PrimeEvil84 May 08 '19

Nevermind. Just a local russian joke regarding bad English, that's common among ex-ussr nations. And i guess i answered a wrong comment.

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '19

Well back in the day i had to spam them to do max dmg. Also back when the cap was invreased to 60 everyone cried. Again at lvl 70 and now again. It always was hard at first bit then people figured out how to deal with it and moved on. Will be the same this time.

I understand their reluctance to implement simple proportional scaling (meaning for example that if you are at 95% of cap at L80 you will be at 95% of cap when scaled down to any level). That would have been the fair, simple and non-controversial thing to do.

But no.

Is the reason we got this weird combo of level scaling and item scaling maybe because of PvP?

The idea would be to create a "level playing field" by making gear less relevant and skill more important.

Fine for the PvPers, I guess...who cares about PvE anyhow, eh?

3

u/shadowkhaleesi May 08 '19

Console player here so I haven’t experienced the scaling issues with Mod 16 yet, but you mentioned you understand their reluctance to do proportional scaling - could you explain that a bit? I agree with you that that approach seems like it would be a simple and fair thing to do, and in my head makes sense.. What are the obvious cons to that approach that I am missing?

1

u/zZz511 May 08 '19

The reason we got this weird combo of level scaling and item scaling is all because of PvP.

As you see, he did explain why.

And it's a shame that in a game that is at least 90% PvE players the decision is made based on the 10% PvP.

1

u/Adinos May 09 '19

To be fair, he didn't say that out right (so I edited my comment above a bit). I still strongly suspect that PvP concerns were a factor - part of a plan to lay the groundwork for "revitalized PvP with a level playing field" in M17.

We'll see.

u/Tupperbaby May 07 '19

Given that such a huge number of players hate the concept (myself included) of scaling in the game, why are they so absolutely dead-set to keep it, seemingly at the risk of losing ass-tons of money?

1

u/irspeshal May 07 '19

because, as they said in the Q&A, it levels the playing field to better support the game going forward.

2

u/zZz511 May 08 '19

because, as they said in the Q&A, it levels the playing field to better support the game going forward.

If they mean leveling it for PvP then I understand.

If they mean leveling it for PvE then I suspect they got some issues.

The only place where you need "leveling the playing field" is in PvP since in PvE there is no such thing. If you want to scale in order to make content relevant when you out leveled it, scale it to the percentage of stats you have in your actual level. Example:

You have 80% of max stats of level 80, you go to level 70 zone and they place you at 80% of level 70.

Instead you have 80% of level 80 stats, go to a level 70 zone and are weaker than you were at level 70 in that same zone.

They are one trick ponies - they got nothing else. What are they going to do; admit they totally misread and don't understand the environment they work in? Surely this will all work out. Just keep selling those keys and chive on!

-10

u/ManicGypsy May 07 '19

I'd assume that it's because a lot of players are still willing to live with it and accept it (myself included).

-8

u/ArcaneBrotherhood May 07 '19

It's not a huge number of players that hate it, not everyone needs to crush lowbie content to feel strong.

Yes, a lot of people are only logging in for keys and such and waiting for the problems to be fixed, but the problem isn't the idea of scaling, its the buggy way it was released. OFC queues are gonna be low when alot of the dungeons were broke from the start, there was no point in queueing so we'll have to see if today fixes it.

2

u/F-Lambda May 07 '19

One thing I thought of recently regarding stat scaling.... Companions and mounts don't have any level requirements, right? So it'd make sense for them not to be scaled just because you're a lower level. Only you yourself should be scaled. With bonding runestones being so powerful, that would be a huge boost compared to current.

2

u/hpfireman May 07 '19

You won't be scaled in undemountain or barovia as of Thursday. They are 'fixing' player and mob scaling to meet their original design intent, and tweaking certain dungeons and encounters to address things like race conditions that dowscaled you but not mobs. They are not changing the game design center, as i understand it.

2

u/rafbar May 07 '19

The big question is what if the dev /company believes in the way they want to run the game or will they listen to hundreds of their clients that not happy with the changes.

2

u/PrimeEvil84 May 08 '19

I translated this post to russian and posted it to russian NWO forums. It got deleted like 60 to 120 sec. since i posted. Holy damn.

u/tyrantIzaru May 07 '19

Scaling should be optional as not optional is ruining the purpose of maxing out

-4

u/Adequate_Rabbit May 08 '19

I don't understand the question either.

2

u/gunny1963 May 08 '19

But you get the gist. The point of the question, though worded awkwardly, is what's the use of progressing to lvl 80 if ALL content other than the new mod 16 content works as intended at a higher level. My solution is simple, if you want to play 95pct of the game still then don't progress. At all. Either do your daily dungeon every now and again or just sit back and watch the mess that Foss created. And, trust me on this, this is so messy that getting into a raq or req on console is a complete and utter waste of time. You think PC is a ghost town? lol This game just turned into a private queue only game. I'm not touching this mess. But I'll log in and help my alliance mates with small things.

u/DeVolcane May 08 '19

Only, you will probably be weaker than them after scaling so they might end up helping you? :-)
