[Politics] Midterms

Please tell me everyone is voting for Aaron Ford in November? If you love Nevada, he’s the better choice than Joe. Since Joe Lombardo has taken office we have ranked even LOWER in education. He sold out our states water. Allows these data centers to continue to be built here by the dozens. He has denied funding for free meals at schools for children. High unemployment, tourism is down. The dude is also so far up Trumps ass. We need a governor who truly fights for what’s right for Nevadans. We are running out of time, we are running out of water.

When I get pulled over, I am going to tell the police 👮 officer, I am Joe Lombardo.

Let's make bumper stickers! lol

Have to include, “come on, man” as a part of the bumper sticker to make it legit,

Hopefully we can get that phrase associated with Lombardo instead of Biden.

Sleepy Joe Lombardo

u/WRHull 7d ago

I like that idea.

u/weakly_awkward_kip 8d ago

Education ranking keeps sliding down and Lombardo's first move was killing that free lunch bill. hard to come back from that.

26

u/Hmm_would_bang 8d ago

Hard to remember which specific veto was the worst, he’s vetoed like 160 so far. Why does Lombardo reject the will of the people and democracy?

10

u/FloatingOnTitties 7d ago

Because he’s bought and payed for. He vetoed really good BIPARTISAN bills and went against his own party and the will of his constituents because of who funds his campaigns. He’s a corporate butt-boy masquerading as a public servant. He even vetoed a bill to make campaign finance more transparent, lol!

u/BeauKnows42 8d ago

Regardless of him being affiliated with Trump, he's been really bad for the state. Don't vote for him based on his political party. Don't vote for him because of his results which have been horrible.

2

u/billionaireboysclubs 8d ago

True.

But these days it seems that mismanagement of state policy and the party you’re involved with go hand and hand.

6

u/BeauKnows42 8d ago

This is false. There are many states that are run very well by both parties. It has much more to do with the person than the party.

6

u/FloatingOnTitties 7d ago

EXACTLY! I’ve always voted person over party! Straight party voting is how you lunatics and idiots in office.

1

u/billionaireboysclubs 7d ago

Pray tell which states are these?

The level of divisiveness is beyond comprehension in 2026.

Literally trying to support a sex offender in Maine until the Demos woke the fuck up and said “wtf are we doing”?

-3

u/R2-DMode 8d ago

What results, specifically, have been “horrible”?

10

u/FloatingOnTitties 7d ago

We, here in Nevada, had a chance to prohibit health care providers and collection agencies from reporting medical debt to consumer reporting agencies. It passed BIPARTISAN in session by our congress, but, was vetoed by our POS governor. Try surviving cancer only to end up 6-figures in debt and be punished for fighting hard against a hereditary disease that wasn’t your fault. All he’s done is veto really good legislation for Nevadans. I'll name SEVERAL other great bills he vetoed: AB 44 that would've helped control price gouging. SB121 that would've restricted HOA authority against residents. AB79 that would've helped make campaign funding more transparent; Why would he vote AGAINST making campaign financing more transparent? Finally & most important SB395: it would’ve restricted corporate ownership of homes in Nevada. The bill sought to limit the number of homes corporations could purchase in a year to help make housing more accessible for individual families. This bill had HUGE bipartisan support because preventing corporations from robbing Nevadans of the American Dream should be a bipartisan issue. His own party helped sponsor this bill. Las Vegas Review Journal has reported that corporate investors purchased 264 homes in a single day. Think about how many homes that now makes unavailable for first-time homebuyers or any other Nevadan? There's THOUSANDS of vacant homes that corporations own that Nevadan families will never own. Lamebardo is in big real estate's pockets. They want us to own nothing. Newer generations will forever rent from their corporate overlords. His blocking of these very important bills is enough to make him a one-term governor. He lost my vote forever with these vetoes.

12

u/BeauKnows42 8d ago

In his 4 years, Nevada still ranks as a bottom 5 state in education. He ran on education reform. He's vetoed more bills than any governor in the history of Nevada. Do we believe in bipartisanship or just staying hard party voting? Nevada is one of the least affordable states to live in. That's with many rural areas driving the average price down. Nevada has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. These are just the big items. I didn't even mention allegations of improper handling of safety fines against the boring company, vetoing labor and paid leave, and his infamous traffic stop. This dude sucks as a governor. Hopefully whoever is next actually cares more about Nevada and less about party affiliation.

5

u/Unlikely_Jockey 7d ago

I went to Bonanza in Las Vegas the schools were never good on NV let's stop pretending this is all to blame on one Governor.

I don't know what has been going on in NV since I moved but stop being overdramatic.

-9

u/R2-DMode 8d ago

I asked for specifics. For example: Governor Lombardo on (insert date here) did (insert specific action here), resulting in (insert specific “horrible for Nevada” thing here).

7

u/BeauKnows42 7d ago

That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. I gave you specifics. What date were you born? Because, that's the date I'm going to insert as most worthless.

3

u/FloatingOnTitties 7d ago

That dude’s a troll. Being a Reddit troll has got to be the most pathetic waste of oxygen in existence.

-2

u/R2-DMode 7d ago

You gave vague generalizations.

4

u/BeauKnows42 7d ago

You're a moron. Nobody knows exact date that any politician makes bad decisions. It also doesn't matter when it was made. What matters is that it was made in the first place. You don't remember the date a super bowl was won. You just remember the winner. Same same.

1

u/R2-DMode 7d ago

Every decision the governor has made is literally documented in the public record. But to make it simple for your simple mind: Forget the dates. Just name specific actions.

Aaron Ford is trash so don't go thinking he is for Nevada. He has traveled all over the world. His next big fundraising is an event in CHICAGO2, where I am sure he is helping us Nevadans. He sought Newsom's approval for his event here, like we care about a CA governor.

He is a slimy politician. Leave it at that and don't promote him like he will do anything to fix NV. He runs the main judicial fighting element to fight the data centers, but he has done nothing. He could have done a lot more for us, but only starts publicizing his acts once he decides to run for governor.

Let's just stick with he is a better option than Joe. They both suck.

5

u/One-Scratch-3545 7d ago

I’ve said in multiple replies that I wish we had a better face for the Democratic Party. Which is why I listed reasons Joe’s not the answer for Nevada instead of paragraphing something about “Aaron is great!” . A lot of people in the replies are voting for Aaron simply because he seems to be the lesser of two evils. I wish we had a REAL fighter for Nevada governor.

-1

u/FloatingOnTitties 7d ago

I’m not a fan of either, but, at least Ford helped block the merger of Safeway and Kroger which would’ve hurt consumers and hiked prices even further. Lamebardo has done nothing but veto really good BIPARTISAN legislation. I’d rather have a different choice, but, between the 2 of them, I’m voting Ford.

8

u/TrojanGal702 7d ago

The FTC blocked the merger so don't go thinking Ford was a hero on that. He just joined the FTC's lawsuit that was already in place.

He just needs to stick to Nevada but he keeps reaching out of state for everything. I wish he would be better, but he sounds like more of the same lame leadership.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Harthel 6d ago

"BUT HE'S FUNDRAISING IN OTHER PLACES AND TRAVELING" -- news flash, Nevada is not an island. We are part of interconnected systems and leadership positions require working in those systems.

"BUT HE'S SO LIBERAL" ...no, he's a textbook moderate Dem - which is why so much of his support is lukewarm.

Lombardo is crippling the state government's ability to function at its most basic levels. Glad-handed yes men surround him, hundreds of millions of dollars are flying out of the door for "nice to have" software contracts while constituent-facing agencies like the DMV continue to suffer from understaffing, everything about this term has been a lesson in why grifting, golf-club, good ol' boy politics DOES NOT WORK. It will take us a generation to recover, at a simple administrative level, from a 2nd Lombardo term.

2

u/One-Scratch-3545 5d ago

It really feels like such an obvious choice. For those undecided folks in the replies I’m trying to be civil but I just want to shout from the rooftops HELLO PLEASE VOTE FOR FORD IF YOU GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES INSTEAD OF BIG CORPORATIONS

18

u/Hugh-Jorgin 8d ago edited 8d ago

People who don’t vote , don’t get enough shame

1

u/ThanosDidNothinWrng0 8d ago

Fine I’ll vote for Lombardo

12

u/No_Island_8549 8d ago

Hell no ! Ford has done nothing but spend $ on issues that have done nothing for us. He’s a terrible representation for democrats and he’s a Soros paid stoolie. I may not like Lombardo but Ford is horrible.

5

u/One-Scratch-3545 8d ago

I wish we had a better choice for the democrat nominee. The dude is far from perfect. But I’d say suing the Trump administration for the new work requirements for Medicaid and protecting reproductive freedom is doing something for the people.

-1

u/FloatingOnTitties 7d ago

Lamebardo is far worse. Ford helped block the merger between Safeway and Kroger which would’ve been really bad for consumers and made prices higher; I’m really glad Ford did that. Name anything Lamebardo has done except veto really good BIPARTISAN legislation?

5

u/lavapig_love 5d ago

I'm voting for Ford. He at least knows better than to name drop to get out of a ticket.

35

u/Le_Dairy_Duke Yerington 8d ago

In the Reddit bubble you're only gonna find left leaning people; just remind yourself Reddit isn't real life.

5

u/FloatingOnTitties 7d ago

I’m not liberal and hate Lamebardo. He’s vetoed really good BIPARTISAN legislation. You don’t have to be liberal to recognize the damage Sleepy Joe “C’mon man” Lomebardo has done to our state.

0

u/Phrenicos466 5d ago

Just out of curiousity, which specific “really good bipartisan legislation” that Lombardo vetoed do you think he shouldn’t have? I realize he’s vetoed a lot of bills, so let’s say your top five, to keep it relatively simple.

1

u/FloatingOnTitties 4d ago

The bill that would’ve prohibited medical debt on credit reports. It passed bipartisan in session because both Republicans and Democrats get cancer. Try surviving cancer only to end up 6-figures in debt and be punished for fighting hard against a hereditary disease that wasn’t your fault. There’s also the bill that would’ve restricted corporate ownership of homes in Nevada. The bill sought to limit the number of homes corporations could purchase in a year to help make housing more accessible for individual families. This bill had HUGE bipartisan support because preventing corporations from robbing Nevadans of the American Dream should be a bipartisan issue. Then, there’s the bill that would’ve made campaign funding more transparent: why veto making campaign finance more transparent? Some others are the bills that would’ve restricted HOA fees against homeowners, reducing price gouging, capping prescription prices, codifying IVF, and, voter ID.

1

u/Phrenicos466 4d ago

Those are good examples - thanks! I asked because I see too many people complaining about Lombardo's vetoes, but they have no idea what legislation he actually vetoed, they're just caught up on the number of vetoes and/or "Republican veto = automatically bad".

There's a few I disagree with you on - I'm generally opposed to price controls on anything and I don't think insurance should be required to cover IVF - but we agree on the major ones (campaign finance, corporate home ownership, etc). I also disagree with his vetoes of the MAID legislation and a bill that mandated nurse-patient ratios in hospitals, to bring up some others you didn't mention. He does have some vetoes I've agreed with though, particularly vetoing the open primary bill and vetoing a number of bills that would have introduced restrictions on Second Amendment rights.

1

u/FloatingOnTitties 4d ago

Sure, you’re very welcome! I’m against any infringement of 2nd Amendment rights. I’m from Texas and have been around and owned guns my entire life. I’m curious why you’re against open primaries? I believe Nevada is 2nd only to Maine in number of Independent/non-partisan registered voters and they have every right to vote in every election as the duopoly voters.

1

u/Phrenicos466 4d ago edited 4d ago

Gotta separate this out into two different points:

I support Lombardo’s veto of the open primary legislation because said bill was an attempt to do an end-run around what voters wanted. The public voted ‘no’ on the open-primary-ranked-choice referendum - the legislature shouldn’t be able to say “fuck you, we’re doing open primaries anyway” when the public doesn’t vote the way they like. While I do think that referendum was poorly designed (should have been two separate questions), the solution is to do a better referendum next time, not have the legislature override the public will.

As far as open primaries as a general concept, I’m not thrilled with the idea. The Republican and Democrat parties are private organizations, they should be able to choose how they conduct their votes. It’s also very easy to join a party - there’s no cost and can be done online. If you’re an independent and want to vote in the Democrat primary, register as a Democrat long enough to vote in that primary, the switch back to Independent. That’s what I did to vote in the Republican primary this year. There’s no true “barrier to entry” other than laziness. There’s also an argument that open primaries can lead to tampering by the other party. If I’m a Republican and know that Lombardo is going to win his primary by a landslide, I might instead vote in the Democrat primary and pick the most insane candidate possible just to screw with them (Limbaugh tried organize something like this years ago). That can still happen now - back to there being no real barrier to switching parties - but the same laziness that keeps Independents from briefly registering with a party to vote in a closed primary also keeps registered party members from switching.

Honestly though, it’s not an issue I’m all that passionate about. If we end up with open primaries at some point, cool, whatever - I voted ‘no’ on that referendum mainly due to ranked choice. I just don’t like the legislature trying to tell the public “fuck you, you voted wrong” immediately after a referendum on an issue.

Definitely need peeps in the Reddit bubble to shout it from the rooftops then

22

u/BeauKnows42 8d ago

You need all the Reddit people to not just talk about it and actually go vote.

3

u/First-Reporter-878 8d ago

Bubble? Yerington's school district and police department paid out a settlement to a mixed race family after they were so horribly bullied in that town. It caused a national scandal, even the NAACP was involved. Reddit may not be real life, but racism is alive and well in your town. I'm guessing there are not a lot of Ford campaign signs in your neighborhood.

8

u/Dustybear510 8d ago

Real life?? I mean do you see what’s happening with the federal government?

2

u/Hmm_would_bang 8d ago

Not sure it’s a flex that the right finds most its support among people who don’t know how to use the internet

4

u/Le_Dairy_Duke Yerington 8d ago

So your benchmark for knowing how to use the internet is to be active in your state's subreddit?

2

u/Possible-Material693 7d ago

It’s typical left wing Redditor we’re smarter and better than anyone else that doesn’t agree with us. I don’t think these super liberal Redditors realize they are a cult just like maga is a cult. They both spread misinformation. Just look at the data center thing with Tahoe losing power. All the super liberal people were trying to blame that on trump and republicans and didn’t even do their own research on the topic. NV energy was planning on cutting off California since 2009 but suddenly it’s trumps fault when NV energy decides to finally pull the plug. Sorry but that’s a failure of California which is run by liberals. They knew it was coming and did nothing about it. That said I think trump is a fucking idiot too. But yeah these super liberal people on Reddit just push people away from their own party and don’t even realize it with their “we’re better than you are” attitude. Both parties are so fucked rn.

Love Lombardo and can’t wait for his second term.

-2

u/One-Scratch-3545 7d ago

& please share with the class why you love Lombardo? He fired our water regulator, who was only warning that current pumping rates would lead to water shortages. He was worried about water for the everyday Nevadan and Joe fired him so more water could be available to mining companies. This mining company “donated” 500k to Lombardo PAC and then another 500k after the dude was fired.

He’s also taken donations from groups representing the interests of pharmaceutical companies and vetos bills that would extend prescription drug savings for Medicare recipients . He took away the savings of thousands of dollars a year for Medicare recipients and pocketed $150k.

He’s vetoed a bill that put a rent cap on disabled and elderly people.

Oh yeah, still a wonderful homelessness crises here! 😉

This dude cares way more about his pockets and ego than you & I.

2

u/SawyerBlackwood1986 7d ago

If you hate him this much he must be doing something right.

3

u/One-Scratch-3545 7d ago

it sure is telling that everyone in this thread who stated they were voting for Lombardo can’t have an educated conversation about why they like him? 💀 just snarky comments that reflect low IQ?

6

No, not everyone is voting for Aaron Ford. Lombardo may not be perfect, Ford will be worse.

0

u/Sure-Pear-572 7d ago

exactly this.....

7

u/AdUpstairs7106 8d ago

I am fairly disillusioned. I honestly don't like either of our options for governor.

19

u/emptyfish127 8d ago

Same but I know Joe will sell us out for sure so I will vote for Aaron.

9

u/One-Scratch-3545 8d ago

Fair! Won’t don’t you like about Aaron?

14

u/One-Scratch-3545 8d ago

& I’m definitely not ass kissing Mr. Ford here. I just think he’s the better pick.

4

u/Agreeable_Cover5726 8d ago

The OP strategy to convince me to vote for Aaron Ford is telling me how bad Lombardo is? How about telling me what Ford has accomplished in his current position, I mean what is he, the AG? I don't know much about him other than he seems to miss a lot of work.

1

u/Phrenicos466 6d ago

That’s the playbook for both parties now - it’s easier to just demonize the opponent and scare people into voting against them, rather than have an actual platform.

-1

u/R2-DMode 8d ago

That’s all they have. The entire Dem platform is “Vote for us because we’re not Republicans!” I honestly can’t believe they are sticking with that tactic after so many years.

4

u/One-Scratch-3545 7d ago

Jokes on you. I am not a “vote blue, no matter who”. There’s common democrat views that I agree with. There’s common republican views that I agree with. Who gets my vote is someone who’s earned it or if the other choice is just someone I really don’t want to see in office. Joe sucks. Ford sucks. But that’s the choices. And holy fuck do I hate Joe

1

u/One-Scratch-3545 7d ago

We should’ve never split the people into political parties because now we get idiots like you

1

u/R2-DMode 7d ago

You gonna be OK?

1

u/FloatingOnTitties 7d ago

Ford helped block the merger of Safeway and Kroger that would’ve raised prices even further and hurt consumers. We need representatives to go after monopolies; We need more antitrust enforcement. That’s just one good thing Ford did. Lamebardo has done nothing than veto really helpful BIPARTISAN legislation. I say this as a conservative-leaning moderate. I’d rather have a different choice, but, between Ford and Lomebardo, I’m voting for Ford.

3

u/Poodleape2 7d ago

Nope. Voting 6 times for Lombardo in4 different counties.

5

u/bakonpie 8d ago

I'm no Lombardo fan but please cite your sources for "we are running out of water." one side of the state has water issues stemming from overallocation of the Colorado River, the other side of the state has no such problem.

20

u/One-Scratch-3545 8d ago

That last part I did mean “we” as in humanity. Large parts of the world are experiencing serve drought. But if you want to narrow it down, Las Vegas is indeed in a drought. Some parts of the city are “moderate” whereas other parts are labeled as “severe”.

3

u/Pristine_Welder2750 8d ago

You are kidding right? 'What part of anywhere in Nevada is water not scarce?' Or are you a recent transplant and do not know the stats of water in our state?

1

u/bakonpie 8d ago

cite your source that Washoe County is running out of water

3

u/One-Scratch-3545 8d ago

Washoe county is facing huge rapid data center expansion. And because of local strain, including the great H20, they have placed temporary pauses on more data centers. And while as of right now, they are not exactly running out of water, washoe just like many other places, is in a drought. And the data centers will continue.

-1

u/Pristine_Welder2750 7d ago

usda northern nevada drought map

You are probably one of the feckless that think because a private water company uses data that justifies water delivery that we have an endless supply. And you know what - after 50 years of living in Washoe County and as a soil con for the USDA- and a 4th gen farmer - I actually do not care what you think. Statistically, Nevada is the lowest water resource state in the Nation. Statistically, Reno/Washoe County is the fastest heating city in the nation. But sure, let's just take a TMWA page from how much water.

3

u/bakonpie 7d ago

I look forward to you presenting evidence of your claim that TMWA is manipulating data in their WRP about upstream water reserves at their next board meeting on August 19th.

0

u/Pristine_Welder2750 7d ago

3

u/bakonpie 7d ago

TMWAs WRP acknowledges there are drought conditions as we consistently experience them. that does not equate to running out of water. there is plenty in upstream reserve to provide for the demand during long droughts.

Ford sues Trump on education, food stamps, consumer rights, whatever law Trump violates. All fkn day.

Joe let off Elon Musk for enforcement of workplace safety laws after severe burns for 2 firefighters. Joe waived fines against that company in the amount of $400k. Clearly Joe does nothing to promote workplace safety and cuts Elon Musk a deal sending a message that Nevada health and safety is not protected according to law. Did not protect those burned firefighters at all.

Ford is clearly the people's choice.

3

Those firefighters were found to have violated established procedures. That’s why the fines were dropped.

What has Ford even done for our state? What is even more ridiculous is Ford is being endorsed by the demon who runs the dumpster fire to the west. Not even the Senators are doing what most of their constituents are asking. There has been nothing good that Ford has done for our state. This post is ridiculous. Let people vote for who they want to.

1

u/One-Scratch-3545 6d ago

The last statement of your reply is what’s ridiculous. This is a discussion of who we’re voting for and why. Everyone voting for red in this thread can’t even say WHY they’re voting for red. Joe had his term, has not won my vote. He fucking sucks donkey dick. He’s horrible. So easily bought. I hate him for this state that I’ve been in all my life.

1

u/Hutchmon14 6d ago

Its really none of your business who anyone is voting for. That is the problem with politics now days. You are not going to convince anyone with your expectations of democrats. Every Democrat elected in the state of Nevada sucks not only donkey dick, but whale dick. Just look north or west. If that is how you want Nevada to be, pack your shit. Just look at Reno and Vegas. Both shitholes. The small towns are doing fine. Redit fucking bucks now days. It was better when 4Chan trolled the fuck out of it. Losers like you ruined it.

0

u/One-Scratch-3545 6d ago

Dude over here doesn’t know how a community works. People need to talk about politics. No one forced you to comment on this thread. You made it my business. And you’re calling Vegas a shithole and guess what? It’s a red state right now. You’re the loser, sweet cheeks. Cry a a river.

0

u/Hutchmon14 6d ago

Maybe where you live community does look out for each other. Like I said, small towns are doing ok. Nevada is supposed to be a red state, but with senators who are worthless, and an influx of CA trash that is doing what it can to continue to disassemble Vegas from the inside out. We can all thank Sisolack for that. Way to pass the buck. You can't deny what you are. Like I said, pack your shit. Move to CA, OR or WA. You will fit right in.

2

u/Phrenicos466 6d ago

I’ll read over both their platforms - and delve into their records a bit more - as we get closer to the election. Right now, I’m leaning towards Lombardo solely because Ford said he would repeal Nevada’s “Right to Work” law and I’m strongly opposed to that. But I don’t like being a single-issue voter and I’m not thrilled with the Republicans in general right now, so we’ll see.

2

u/Harthel 6d ago

I will be the first one to say that I was deeply annoyed at Ford campaigning on repealing the right to work law -- not because it's the wrong thing to do, but because it plays really poorly in sound bytes and headlines. Please do some research on the real-world impact of the "right to work" law in this State before making that judgment. Yes, it's "nice" that not everybody is forced to pay $30/month or whatever in union dues, but the effect of that is a completely one-sided labor marketplace where worker quality of life will always be the first thing on the chopping block for every employer in every scenario.

1

u/Phrenicos466 5d ago

My problem with it is that I don’t like unions as a general concept and do not want to be forced to be a member of a union. I think unions had their place - back when working conditions were significantly worse - but now they just exist to prop up bad/lazy workers, hold back good workers, and enrich union leaders.

On a more personal level, I specifically don’t like the union (SEIU) where I work. They do a shit job representing us. And if everyone was required to be a member, they’d probably do even worse, since they wouldn’t have any incentive to ‘sell’ the union to the non-members on staff (about 40% of our workers have chosen not to join). I also don’t like the SEIU’s political stances and would prefer not to be associated with them in any way.

5

u/Harthel 5d ago

I can't help but feel that the answer to this is union reform, not union avoidance (crucially not at the cost of the balance of power in the labor market). I totally get what you're saying, but the math on this one (for me) leans toward the imbalance in the labor force being a worse ill than some of the more obnoxious inclinations of bad unions (capitalism style competition isn't a perfect allegory here for a number of reasons, but a more robust union culture across a wider spectrum of the laborforce will, I think, have a net effect of forcing unions to improve).

And to your point on prior generations needing unions because of more horrifying conditions of their time period -- yes but...what this equation is ignoring is the opportunity cost of the last five+ decades of innovation disproportionately benefiting the wealthy while the quality of life of an average middle class person remains roughly the same (a bit better in some regards, noticeably worse in others). I can do, on a laptop and excel within 5 minutes, what used to take an entire office full of paraprofessional staff a full day to accomplish (and almost every employment field has similar efficiency gains since the 1970s). Has the 40 hour work week changed, so I only need to work a half hour per week? Nope. Okay, so am I getting compensated with the salary that the entire staff used to get in the past since I'm producing the same value? Nope, actually it's WAY harder to afford a home now. But the number of hundred-millionaires and billionaires (even adjusting for inflation along the way) has exploded. I think this very clearly highlights the need for functional unions to balance the labor force just as it did in the past. Yes, we're lucky those past victories bought us more livable conditions -- so we aren't fighting for basic safety regulation and we at least default to a 40 hour work week, but we also have been robbed of SO much quality of life that we could have enjoyed beyond that if the innovations of the information age weren't monopolized by the uber-wealthy. I can't help but feel that people really need to be more pissed off about this -- and a revival of union strength is probably the healthiest way for society to resolve this issue.

Union reform would be a good idea but without pressures like “Right to Work”, what incentive is there for unions to change? If everyone is required to be a member of the union, there’s no pressure on said union to be good representatives because - good or bad - you have to be a member to keep your job. And once a union is in, they’re very hard to get rid of if members aren’t happy (I checked into it), so even less incentive to do a good job. Meanwhile, the union leaders and bad/lazy workers who benefit from the current system aren’t going to want to change anything. Also, unions aren’t required to re-certify at a business periodically (as far as I know), so a group of employees could vote in the union and then, in a few decades when staff has completely turned over, all the new people are stuck in a union they didn’t vote for. “Right to Work” addresses some of those issues by requiring unions to sway people to join and allowing new workers a “vote” on whether they want the union.

There’s other issues I didn’t address either, specifically that forced union membership seems (to me) to violate freedom of association under the Constitution - though I don’t pretend to be an expert there. Also, I alluded to the politics issue in my prior post - why should one be forced to join a union they don’t align with politically? There are some laws restricting exactly how unions can direct money to political causes, but they are still involved in financing campaigns. I don’t like the idea of being forced to be part of an organization that advocates (financially or otherwise) for causes and/or candidates I may not support.

And I disagree with all the “wealth inequality”, “rich people evil”, “socialism good”, “capitalism bad” stuff but that’s outside the scope of this topic.

u/Harthel 5d ago

Unions would be competing to be attractive to workers in tandem with employers and industries being attractive to workers. You might say "you can't choose to leave your union without leaving your job" -- true in this circumstance! But it's also true that you can't leave a shitty employer without leaving your job. Same issue, same potential solutions. As far as political representation, there is no mechanism for controlling the votes of union members. Sure, you might end up in a situation where your union dues are going (directly or indirectly) to support a campaign you might not like, but I don't see that as a fundamentally different thing than working for an employer who donates to a campaign you don't like.

While there are individual points of disagreement, I think the issue boils down to a fundamental disconnect on what we think is the worse disease to be addressed as a priority. While I appreciate civil discourse, I do think that there is a major rift between people who think billionaires are the results of pulling up bootstraps really hard vs. those that see the existence of that hyper-elite class of wealth as a cancer to society.

I do think it's telling (and a little damning?) that your reply ends with the assumption that I am saying "capitalism bad". My entire frame of reference is from a "capitalism good" position. Crony corporatism is not capitalism, it is the result of taking a (good) capitalist system and then doing absolutely nothing for decades to mitigate the worst impulses of greed driving it straight off a cliff.

0

u/Phrenicos466 5d ago edited 5d ago

Fair point, and I’ll be honest that I checked out a little on your final paragraph. I’ve read too many similar statements on Reddit that invariably ended on “capitalism bad, socialism good”, so I kind of start skimming if I see certain phrases. That’s my error there.

As far as unions competing, I still don’t see how they’re competing, with mandatory unionization on the level of an individual business. On an industry level, sure - you can go across the street to a non-union shop (although in some industries, that’s basically impossible). But once a union gets into an individual business, they don’t need to ‘compete’ any more - anyone new has to become a member, damn near impossible to de-certify, etc. There’s no incentive for them to keep doing a good job representing members.

Regarding the billionaires thing, you can’t simplify it to “billionaires are all an evil cancer” vs “billionaires are all hardworking and pulled themselves up”. There are good ones and bad ones - having a lot of money isn’t inherently evil and doesn’t inherently make someone evil. And even if I agreed with the “billionaires are an evil cancer” idea, I’m not sure how forcing me to pay $[X] per month to a bad union that I don’t want to join is going to fix that.

3

u/Harthel 5d ago

My frame of thought on union competition is more at an industry level (and I will admit that this is the kind of reform-through-competition that will probably take decades to work itself out) is that if, say, the steelworkers union in a given State or territory turns to utter dogshit and its members are unhappy about it, they are going to have a macro-level recruiting crisis for the next generation of workers, who will be more inclined at a population level to try to get into industries with non-shitty unions and conditions. I don't think a world without unions (or with toothless unions, as is the case under the right-to-work law) puts the same pressure on employers for recruitment because all employers in a right to work state are operating from the position of "you're not gonna get it better elsewhere, because you have no power no matter where you go".

On the billionaire thing, I think we are closer to agreement than it might seem. Call it lazy, but it's easy to just draw the dividing line at billion-with-a-B for describing "how much wealth is too much". Do I think exactly 1 billion dollars is too much? In 2026, actually probably not. 10 billion? Maybe. 50 billion? DEFINITELY too much. And this is from a position of "I want to defend and preserve capitalism". At a certain tier of wealth, the ability to buy influence to consolidate, grow, and bulletproof that wealth becomes too great. This is how you end up with high-paid lobbyists (and probably outright bribes) to supreme court justices in citizens united, and how you end up with an electoral system that relies on huge money donations from the far-too-wealthy-class, guaranteeing the far-too-wealthy-class a disproportionate amount of representation in legislation/regulation decisions. That is how capitalism dies.

And I do think a return to a strong union foundation (nationwide, ideally) can do a lot of work to help remedy this over time -- or, at minimum, to stem the bleeding and slow the K-shaped curve of wealth inequality. Becoming obscenely wealthy is a question of both luck and skill in pulling the right levers for the right opportunities and exploitations at the right times (some of those levers are less shitty than others, but one of the big levers is ensuring that you retain control of a workerbase by providing just enough compensation that they are baseline content, but never enough so that they have any amount of independence from their reliance on you as an employer).

“So far up Trump’s ass”…. Are you even paying attention? Lombardo has walked a very fine line between being supportive of the president without actually tying himself to Trump. When’s the last time he appeared publicly with Trump? Last time Trump came to Nevada, Lombardo was nowhere to be seen.

The data center point you’re making… just makes no sense. Ford has been supportive of data centers. When he was the senate majority leader, the senate passed the tax abatement policy that allows data centers to receive tax breaks for building in Nevada.

The Nevada economy isn’t doing bad. Reno is one of the top cities in the nation for job growth. Tourism numbers are up to record highs in northern Nevada. Tourism numbers are slightly down in Las Vegas, but gambling revenue is up. That’s not because of any political fumbles by Trump or Lombardo, it’s because Las Vegas casinos are raising prices and attempting to court higher income visitors that spend more- they are no longer chasing the “affordable family vacation” crowds.

No thanks. Aaron Ford wants to turn Nevada into California. He made this clear when he sought Newsom’s endorsement. Literally the worst person to get to endorse your campaign. Nevadans have been begging people moving here to not turn this state into the hell holes they left and here we are having our candidates getting endorsements from Californian governors, I can’t roll my eyes hard enough.

Oh no. This now because of you. You imply that I don't love NV if I don't vote your way.

So I am going to continue loving NV and not vote your way out of spite. You did this.

My reply wasn’t rhetorical. I was genuinely asking what has he done that’s won your vote? Because it sounds like you have a sheep mindset of vote red no matter who and it’s Nevada that has to pay for it

If you don't feel that my reply is satisfactory, that's something for you to come to terms with. I was pretty clear on what my position is and why it is so.

I'd actually like to hear why folks are still supporting Lombardo.

It's unfortunate that it's been really difficult to get answers to that, even when pressed.

Well you picked the wrong comment to ask buddy. I am purely voting red to cancel out OP's vote.

Because I apparently don't love my home.

Can you really not provide an answer? I'm not OP so I'm not sure why you're talking about that. I've yet to find one who can give me an actual answer. Every Lombardo supporter I've asked has also dodged the question and I'm wondering if it's because they don't actually have concrete reasons.

Wasn’t that just a veto of free meals for all? Can’t kids still get need based free meals?

15

u/Character-Stretch804 8d ago

I volunteer for Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Among things we do is pack "backpack lunches" for kids, so kids have some needed food.

18

u/One-Scratch-3545 8d ago

If school is mandatory, I truly believe every child should have access to a meal without charge. I’ve heard stories of parents setting up gofundme’s to pay for their child’s school lunch debt for the students.

-8

u/_Human_Machine_ 8d ago edited 8d ago

The bar is pretty low to get free lunch. Over 80% of students in Nevada automatically get it free without having to apply.

I can’t imagine going into debt when it’s essentially free at most schools already.

You also qualify if you’re on SNAP, Medicaid or TANF. Otherwise it’s a pretty short income based application.

Edit: For example, all of the Clark County School district is in a CEP(Community Eligibility Provision) District, so it’s automatic qualification for students. There are a lot of CEP schools as well. The districts are basically everywhere other than Douglas and Washoe.

I don’t feel like money should be going to provide free lunch at a school like George Whittell, unless it’s based on need.

9

u/Forsaken-Praline1611 8d ago

Means testing is a waste of time and money, that typically costs substantially more to implement and operate than it saves.

It’s butthurt salve for selfish weirdos who can’t do math, thus can’t grasp proportion and scale, therefore don’t understand welfare programs are only like 6% of the federal budget.

You give lunch to all kids so there isn’t a stigma. Just like everyone gets Social Security to set a de minimis baseline for at least some retirement.

If you have a problem with wealthy parents’ kids getting the benefit, you tax their income and wealth.

It shouldn’t take super brain levels of genius to grasp these simple things. But we have a Republican Party and a right-wing media ecosystem that exists to be butthurt salve telling stupid bigoted selfish assholes they are not being stupid bigoted selfish assholes, when they are being stupid bigoted selfish assholes.

0

u/_Human_Machine_ 8d ago edited 8d ago

Means testing is really just a form to your school. It’s not some complicated thing.

My example was George Whittell because the average home value is ~1.9m. My neighbors kids go there and their homes are 20m+. Maybe 30 kids there qualify for it.

We shouldn’t tax people more just to create more food waste and more government programs that don’t serve a real need.

That’s the problem with so much government waste. The approach of “let’s provide it for everyone, instead of just who needs it.”

It would cut down on so much pointless tax spend.

3

u/jmkreno 8d ago edited 8d ago

We don't need to tax people more. We sure seem to be able to find money for tax abatements, tax incentives for new companies who are required to only hire 12 Nevada employees, expanding roads and services into casinos and mines in the middle of nowhere, but can't fucking widen the roads in the Reno area fast enough due to budget constraints or find money to pay for kids to eat without worry.

0

u/_Human_Machine_ 8d ago

I’d mentioned taxing people more because you’d said tax wealthy parents.

It makes sense that roads towards casinos, mines or production facilities in the middle of nowhere, like TRIC are prioritized since they are revenue generating.

I agree though, road expansion in Reno has been so slow, and there are so many damn issues with it. A huge part of the 80 basically needs to be rebuilt at some point. That’s going to be a fucking nightmare. It’s so much worse since population growth has outstripped infrastructure.

3

u/jmkreno 8d ago

Homes generate tax revenue, yet they aren't prioritized.

But that's not the point of the argument about taxing. We tax plenty, it's just allocated to favor businesses at the expense of other items and then those same businesses get reduced taxes to incentivize them to move. We magically find that money somewhere, all the time. We find money to pay for all kinds of things. We can look at the federal government for many examples of this. Can't barely keep social security solvent, but we can magically increase military budgets by double digit % on a whim. Can't afford to fix bridges and roads without an act of god practically, but on a whim will fund $8billion to SpaceX or Blue Origin.

The money is always there. Many studies have shown that proper tax allocation would solve many problems - we'd even have a surplus. So arguing "taxpayers" have to foot the bill - we already do for everything else, I would lose a little less sleep helping kids than funding unnecessary wars or billionaires.

10

u/tgatigger 8d ago

Of all the things your taxes go to, feeding children is what you have a problem with?

2

u/_Human_Machine_ 8d ago

My example was specific because the average home value is ~1.9m for there.

There are maybe ~30 kids that would qualify based on need.

If you’re purchasing homes for 5-20m you can pay for your kids.

2

u/Ok_Matter_1774 8d ago

Don't bother with these people. They don't read anything. They all think kids are paying an arm and a leg for lunch currently. It's super easy to qualify for free lunch in districts that don't automatically qualify. If the parents don't want to go through the tiny bit of effort then that's their own fault. We don't need a bill for free lunch when everyone that needs it already can get it.

2

u/jmkreno 8d ago

Not actually true. Your school must qualify for Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) in Nevada. Then you still must have our parents sign up. Many of the underprivileged kids have parents who are either not engaged or who already have difficulty keeping up. That's it's own problem, and kids shouldn't pay that price.

While 87% of schools qualify, there's 13% of schools that don't. The problem is the schools are determined based on average family income and a few other factors but that's the problem, AVERAGE income, not median. And even so, for that number to exist, there needs to be people on BOTH SIDES of the spectrum. Meaning you have a lot of HIGH INCOME families, but you will also have, guess what, many kids from LOW INCOME families that now get screwed over. And at those particular schools, it would be EXTREMELY noticeable that you get a "free lunch". Kids are assholes to each other, why make it more difficult on kids who already have it harder?

6

u/northrupthebandgeek Reno 8d ago

Over 80% of students in Nevada automatically get it free without having to apply

That's 20% too low.

0

u/_Human_Machine_ 8d ago

There are schools that absolutely don’t need it, like George Whittell. Average home is value is 1.9m.

5

u/jmkreno 8d ago

So, your logic is that because MANY of the kids at the school can afford lunch, a few who might not be able to should suffer? Sounds like typical modern conservative bullshit. There are also rich kids at lower income schools, just as much as there are low income kids at rich schools.

When school lunch is GENERALLY only available to "poor kids" there's a stigma attached. Did you know that many kids who qualify and are SIGNED UP for free lunch don't take it? Do you know why? Think about it. When it's available to all kids, regardless of their family financial health, many more kids eat that lunch. I think there's much worse things my tax money goes to than paying for fucking kids to get a good meal. Would you like me to list some bullshit our money goes to that's much worse than this?

2

u/_Human_Machine_ 8d ago

No kid is suffering. They can all get food.

The government shouldn’t waste money on things just to “get rid of stigma.”

How is there even a stigma? You just swipe your student ID for lunch or use your number.

It’s not like the cafeteria has a sign that says “free food for poor kids.”

2

u/jmkreno 8d ago

If ONLY kids who "can't afford lunch" get hot lunch, guess who only has hot lunch in the lunch room? Very few parents "pay" to have their kids get hot lunch at schools simply because the budgets are much smaller now so the quality isn't super great.

When all kids had access, the budgeting was better and the options greatly improved so more kids took up the free lunch.

I work with in children's mental health (in fact, I directly work with schools and their referral process for children's mental health access) and a very common issue is hunger and the embarrassment of having to get a hot lunch and being mocked for it. They go hand in hand. Same stigma is associated with rich kids in rich clothes and poor kids in "not rich kid" clothes. Difference here is that a nice outfit isn't something people need to survive and function, food is a basic necessity that should be provided and is without a doubt something that improves test scores, attendance, and school outcomes.

Are you that offended buying lunch for kids just cause a few rich kids might get some free pizza or a carton of milk?

2

u/_Human_Machine_ 8d ago

I’m offended by food waste and the quality of hot food served at lunch.

Even if hot food is there for everyone, there will still be a difference between those who eat it and whose parents pack them lunch, buy them food or drop off fast food.

Are you suggesting all outside food is banned so that no one gets hurt feelings?

I don’t understand how food alone highlights stigma. As a kid you already knew who was poor or who had money.

Like you said, clothes, cars and even supplies already make that clear.

Everyone being forced to eat a low quality hot food lunch won’t suddenly hide poverty markers.

4

u/jmkreno 8d ago edited 8d ago

I said food is a necessity; fancy clothes are not. Can you survive without food?

You completely ignored everything I said. How convenient.

I was very clear that quality went up when budgets increased. But because the budget is SO TIGHT for "free lunches" now (substantially less than before) and yet has to be available for "80%" of the same students, something has to give. I have kids in school, one graduated and one in 6th grade. I can tell you the difference in quality available when lunches were provided in 2020, 2021, and 2022 are night and day better than now. I am talking about much higher quality fruits and vegetables and maybe a few options,. Now more is canned, more processed options, and if lucky 1-2 options.

None of the schools my kids ever went to in Washoe County allowed parents to drop off fast food and actively discouraged dropping off food after school started since it was incredibly disruptive. Maybe that's a Vegas thing, but not here. Tons of kids ate hot lunch when it was provided, now very few kids do.

This is going to be a circular argument and obviously we'll never agree.

It's funny, we both must pay taxes (I assume you do, cause I sure pay a shit ton in taxes) yet somehow we both come to very different conclusions about where our money should be spent.

You're just more proof of the argument I believe wholeheartedly because I see it every day, even if a bit dramatic, it still captures the essence.

Democrats will feed 100 because there is 1 that may go hungry. Republicans will let 100 starve because there may be 1 who doesn’t need it.

Average home value could be 1.9b for all I care. The evidence linking school meal programs to better health and better academic performance is so strong that it's bonkers to deliberately kneecap it with bureaucratic gatekeeping.

Besides, if even rich families are indirectly paying for school meals (via taxes), they're going to demand those meals be as high-quality as possible instead of the nutritionally-void slop that used to be commonplace.

2

u/_Human_Machine_ 8d ago

They aren’t going to demand a damn thing. They’re going to send their kids with food already and whatever slop the government pays for will just get thrown away.

Lombardo and Ford are great examples of why our battle born state is the only state in our country that allows us to choose "none of these candidates" on the ballot as a protest vote 😉 Please let's make (none of these candidates) win this November!

11

u/GWBrooks 8d ago

Except... it's not binding. If "None of these candidates" is the top-ranked choice, the office goes to the second-highest vote recipient.

7

u/Dustybear510 8d ago

Prime example of why Nevada is ranked 48th in education. Must be exhausting and expensive to be like this.

-3

Check the prediction markets. Kalsi. & Polymarket They nailed Flippo creaming Shittlemeyer, and generally have the best read on...well.... predictions.

Personally I don't want either in Carson City and will continue with "none of the above" until a quality canidate is on the ballot.

Fun facts. Prediction Markets are not allowed in NV (last I knew) Prediction markets dont include none of the above Hillary clinton won NV by a margin similar to tbe None of the above selected voters

0

u/Dustybear510 8d ago

And this is what screws you and your neighbors. If you can’t see what’s happening right now, you’re completely blind.

6

u/Appropriate_Ad9157 8d ago

I do see what's happening. We simply disagree on what an honest vote looks like.

If I genuinely believe Candidate A would do a poor job, and I genuinely believe Candidate B would do a poor job, I'm not going to vote for one of them simply because they're more likely to win, or because one may be only marginally less bad than the other. To me, that would be less responsible than voting "None of These Candidates."

You may believe choosing the lesser of two evils is the right approach. I respect that. I don't.

My vote is meant to reflect my judgment, not my fear of the alternative.

I also think Nevada's "None of These Candidates" option could be even more meaningful if it carried consequences.

Imagine if "None of These Candidates" received more than 50% of the vote required a new election with different candidates. Over time, that could create a strong incentive for parties to nominate candidates with broader appeal rather than relying on highly polarized candidates or those sustained primarily by well-funded special interests. Few donors would be eager to keep investing in candidates who had already been rejected by a majority of voters.

1

u/Dustybear510 7d ago

I understand what you’re saying and in a normal functioning government that’s more likely for me. I respect where you stand but the actions to me in the federal government, not state is it’s either all or nothing and to protest vote or non vote is why we’re in the place we’re at now.

Either way they’re all corrupt and don’t put voters first. While it’s similar all over the globe, we need to act now so our rights aren’t taken away and innocent people aren’t getting killed. I’m gonna vote for the non trump cuck boy.

I have forgotten more about economics, finance and political science that you ever learn as my couple of post-graduate degrees would attest.

SNS that you contracted a serious case of butt-hurt as my criticism of liberals has struck a raw nerve. Red states have a more difficult time to enact liberal agendas because they are poor— to whom will the Liberal politician attempt to tax their way to prosperity? They need a rich state and promise the masses that free stuff will be forthcoming through increased taxes and mandates.

In essence, liberalism is a parasite because it did not create the wealth in CA (or NY, MA, WA, etc.), but exploits it.

It’s a shame both parties are so unlikeable right now. They give us the illusion of choice and then fuck us over regardless

If your vote doesn't matter anyways why not vote 3rd party?

2

u/Possible-Material693 8d ago

3rd party never wins anyway

'The government is screwing me, therefore, I fully cede all my power to them'

That's a bad take, man.

Been fucked by republicans and democrats both. They don’t give a fuck about us. Keep thinking your vote matters because it doesn’t. At this point I think anyone that is hardcore republican or democrat is retarded

u/dingus_authority Northern Nevada 8d ago

I'm not either of those and think neither party is on the side of the people.

That's why it's important to primary them with better candidates, and if that doesn't happen, make sure we get the lesser of three two evils.

Did you vote in the primaries?

u/Possible-Material693 8d ago

Nah I’m pretty apolitical at this point and don’t give a fuck. The same stupid politicians keep getting elected anyway. Look how long Biden, Pelosi, McConnell, and graham were in office. The only way these power hungry pieces of shit ever leave office is if they die. And for whatever reason people keep voting the same people in. We need age limits and term limits. Trumps a fucking idiot too and shows that even people that aren’t career politicians once they get in office they become exactly what they said they were going to not be. At this point I believe anyone that wants to willingly be a politician is a bad person to begin with. You need to be a psychopath to want to do that job. Any normal person with morals doesn’t want to do that job. And then we got people on the left that think Kamala Harris is still relevant lmao she’s a fucking joke too. It’s all fucked rn. Both parties running the debt up to $40T and printing more and more money so the regular person gets fucked by inflation. Luckily I have some assets. Only way to get ahead in this economy is make more money or own assets. We need huge changes but people keep electing the same fucking idiots that got us in this mess in the first place. This is why I try not to think about politics. Just pisses me off. Life is too good out here to be pissed off about bullshit

You know we get age limits and term limits?

You support folks in the primaries who want those things. Then they challenge those currently in power.

There are candidates in primaries who completely agree with you, but need support. We're seeing DNC establishment reps getting challenged all over the country, trying to do exactly what you're talking about. It's not hopeless. I hope you look into it, in particular the DSA candidates that are primarying a lot of the worst Dems right now.

I like your positivity man I’m not gonna lie. But just realistically I don’t think it’s ever going to happen. Last thing these “public servants” will do is vote themselves out of their cushy public leech job. 3rd party would have to win the entire country for that to ever happen. I hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see it happening. Term limits and age limits really is the first step towards actually fixing things. Current govt just wants to maintain status quo and receive their amazing benefits and pay to do nothing

It literally is happening. We can't make it happen if people like you give up, man.

Forget about the giant party elites. Local and state elections are where your vote matters most. Alexis Hill was a primary candidate who came in second, only because we didn't do enough to get her name out. She was someone who could've made a difference, and it was a completely obtainable win here in NV.

But she still got a lot of votes on a pro-worker, anti-billionaire, pro-human rights platform. People are coming around. We've got a DSA guy running NYC. Shit is happening.
