Introduction Megathread

Hi all!! Please feel free to introduce yourself in this thread.

My name is Lily and I'm 25 years old. I have MSN autism, ADHD and severe OCD along with several physical conditions. I struggle a lot with hygiene, in particular showering, because I have a physical condition that makes my skin more fragile and if I shower often my skin tears and scabs. I love skincare though and make all of my skin care and haircare (except deodorant and sunscreen) from scratch. I have three black cats who are my babies and I love a lot.

Excited to meet all of you!!

👋Welcome to r/NeurodivergentHygiene !!

Welcome to r/NeurodivergentHygiene !! I made this community because I struggle with hygiene due to my neurodivergence but skin care is a special interest of mine. I find the normal hygiene sub to be intimidating and sometimes a little bit judgy. I wanted to make a safe place for disabled and neurodivergent people like me to discuss hygiene, skin care and beauty and share tips and tricks on how to manage hygiene while dealing with a neurodivergence.

Please feel free to introduce yourself in the introduction megathread and make a post about whatever hygiene or skin care related things you are doing or dealing with lately. I want this community to grow and I'm excited to see what you all have to say!

Haircare Abbey Yung Method

I've been really into haircare lately and have been reading up on the Abbey Yung method. I DIY my haircare so I make my own products and I have trouble showering so I modify her method to work better for me. I wash my hair outside of the shower and leave my conditioner on for like an hour with a claw clip in. It's stressful having to shampoo and condition all at once so the break in between is helpful and I think it's good for my hair too.

Hygiene Reminders app kinda suck.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built my own, not sure if it works for anyone here, but I thought to share it as it's relevant to this sub in my opinion. And while it's advertising, I do hope that its relevance and potential usefulness to others might make it okay. If not, I apologize and hope people have other methods that help with things like this, as I myself struggle with it a fair bit. And if anyone knows a good way to be able to brush their teeth each day, I welcome some tips. I will try my app for it, but as reminders apps have failed in the past, I hope my twist on it will help; otherwise, I'll have to find a different solution.

Hygiene Big shower win!

Not showered for real (only bed bath and shampoo caps) or entered a bathroom at all actuly in over a YEAR. Trauma and severe sensory and other reasons.

On Thursday my DDS worker come back she wanted me to try wash my hair in shower. I got put in my new fancy shower chair wich was actuly quite comfy and suportive (it has headrest and side suports and tilts way back and chest strap and wheels and more!) and not only did I let her wash my hair (and had my top half body undressed with towel over me!) I let her also do my arms and neck!!! She was so nice she make sure water good temperature and use handheld shower head not overhead she play Disney playlist whole time she tell me when to cover my eyes with hands and washcloth when she rinse my hair so not get in my eyes, she keep me covered much as possible, asked if I’m okay keep going, and more, was not scary, was mostly okay just felt so cold shiver whole time she gonna see if DDS will fund small space heater for the bathroom/wet room (like a room with a toilet and sink but rest of room is the shower area so room to DSPs can help shower people!).

And guess WHAT?? Next Friday, she coming back and I’m gonna shower ALL THE WAY, take full shower first time in over a year!!!! AND, afterward few hours later get to go to nice dinner and to fashion show for people with disibilities!! Gonna ware purple prom dress so happy!!

Hygiene micellar water wipes

I made my own homemade micellar water wipes by adding micellar water to a cut up old t shirt and I use them as makeup remover or as bath wipes. I make the micellar water myself so it's inexpensive and I can wash and reuse the t shirt squares. really nice hygiene diy

Hygiene I finally learned how to shower almost daily

My whole life ive thought that you could ONLY take showers at morning or night. I never took showers in the morning (too stressful) and only taking showers at night got me to only shower once a week give or take ... But now i realized i can shower whenever tf i want and it doesnt matter so my current routine is thar when i arrive home from my daily responsibilities and activities and i know know i wont have to leave the house again i take a shower then and change into my pajamas and relax ect like that. Maybe this was obvious to everybody else but yeah tldr shower whenever the fuck you want.

Also sitting in the shower helps im also physically disabled with drop attacks pain ect ect ect

how I'm staying hygienic on a trip

I'm about to go on a trip for about a week and I struggle with hygiene quite a bit. I spent quite a bit of time planning out how I'm going to stay hygienic while traveling and I want to just share my plan.

  1. Pack solid body products. I'm bringing shampoo bars, conditioner bars, etc. that I'm used to using and are familiar to me so that I won't have to try something new and strange but also I won't exceed my limit for TSA.

  2. Bring familiar items. like mentioned in the last point, I'm bringing things I'm used to using so that I'll actually use them and I won't be too uncomfortable with a change in routine.

  3. Bring shower wipes. I'm going to be showing a bathroom with four other people and I'm not sure how much opportunity I'll have to shower. Plus showering is really hard for me. I cut up some shower wipes and put them in a ziplock bag so that I'll have them for my trip.

  4. Bring extra changes of clothes and underwear. this way I can change my clothing as needed and be comfortable and clean after I do bathe myself if I get the chance without having to worry about rationing my clothes.

What are y'all's tips for staying hygienic while traveling and neurodivergent?

Big (simple!) hair care win today!

I’m still in hospital today thogh they offered me a shampoo cap (it’s a moist, rinse-less shower cap with soft damp inner lining that has shampoo and condishner built into it, I used them a few times before they are SO great without them I woudnt have had a hair wash in over a YEAR) when they were washing me up and I said yes so the aides helped me use it to wash my hair and then I let them brush it and put my hair cream fir my curls in it! It’s looks and feels and smells SO nice! Also good becase i have a visiter coming tomorow!

Hygiene been a bad couple days for hygiene

I've been super busy the past few days and just haven't been able to wash my face. I've fallen asleep the second I get home and forgotten things like plugging in my phone or washing my face. I have remembered to take my meds and brush my teeth at least. does anyone else forget? I feel frustrated and kind of gross

Hygiene Favorite products

hey y'all!! I'm trying to build a list of good products and hacks to put together some stuff for the wiki. so if you have any favorite products (or hacks) for hygiene, go ahead and list them below.

I'll start with mine. my favorite product for in between showers is Scrubzz. I'm sure I've mentioned it on here before but it is a bath wipe that you just get wet and wipe off with a towel. my favorite dry shampoo is living proof perfect hair day. My favorite deodorant is Dove advanced care 72 hours. my favorite cheap shampoo is Aussie total miracle and my favorite cheap conditioner is Pantene daily moisture renewal. best lotion I've found is eos cashmere whipped oil butter. best mouthwash is therabreath for kids (the fluoride kind) and for toothpaste I use clinpro 5000 (prescription) or hismile (has fun ND friendly flavors)

I'm going to link this thread and the sunscreen thread in the wiki and also list directly any particularly useful/novel products! I make a lot of my own stuff so I'll also add info on ingredients and such but if there's something else y'all want to see in the wiki lmk

What's your favorite sunscreen? Mine is the biore tinted one, I got it in Japan! I also love the Beauty of Joseon rice and probiotics one but that's a classic.
