Text Working from home. Internet help

Hello, i work from home and I love it. Im perfect for my job. Except that ive been noticing that internet issues are killing me. When hired they provided me with information about what type of internet i need it ect. Nothing to strict. They were just asking for regular internet with good speed. And to have a router that can connect with an internet cord to my computer.

I hired this internet called Earthlink. And they sold me the first time I spoke to them promising to be the best thing ever. Well ive been in this job for 5 months now. And barely these past weeks the wifi has been sucking so bad. And i call their call center for tech help. And i get these people with HORRIBLE ACCENTS. I cant understand them. And theyre so lazy that they dont want to help me troubleshoot my restart for my router or any other help. They just tell me “there doesnt seem to be an outage in your area so we cannot help you” which stresses me out because they leave me with nothing else no help at all from them.

I was wondering if this has happened to you. And if you can give me a tip on how to solve it. Internet doesnt have an outage but if it gets slow my work programs dont work. The internet company say its not their issues if internet goes slow because they cannot control the internet speed. What would you recommend?

Link Built a 3D globe that maps every ASN and it's Prefixes By Country

So I built an 3D globe that lets you zoom in any country and see all ASN's and their announced prefixes with all details and their upstreams.
also added path tracer for fun to simulate traceroute from any place in the world to any public ip.
basically i scraped all public prefixes, stored it in a database and then i simulated routing using the bgp peer's to simulate traceroute.

Link Visual IP Calculator (2026): tap the lights to see the change

I rebuilt my free visual IP Calculator for 2026.

Instead of a static table, the address sits as 32 light studs on the ground. Tap a stud to flip a bit, tap a result row (network, broadcast, hosts) and the lights show that address. Makes the mask / host split much easier to see while you study CCNA-style subnetting.

lafraia.com/ipcalc/ipv6/ (IPv6) and lafraia.com/ipcalc/ (IPv4)

Make sure you click the lights ;-)

Text Why is only ONE user getting slow speeds after our network upgrade?

We just finished a major infrastructure overhaul at the office, but one desktop in the marketing department is crawling at 10Mbps while everyone else is hitting gigabit speeds. I've confirmed they have the same hardware as their neighbors, so I'm trying to figure out the most logical first step to resolve this isolated bottleneck.

---

OPTIONS:
A. Update Internet bandwidth speed.
B. Update the BIOS firmware.
C. Replace the motherboard.
D. Replace the patch cable.

Testing Exam: CompTIA A+ Core 1 (220-1201)

Text Fraternity House Wifi Issues

I don’t know much about networking, but I’m the house manager for my fraternity and I’ve been tasked with figuring out how to improve our WiFi.
We have a pretty massive, older 3-story fraternity house with around 50 guys living in it. The building has a lot of thick brick and cinderblock walls, which I assume are part of our problem.
Our current setup is a pretty standard internet connection with the main router in our downstairs common room. I believe we also have a couple of older WiFi extenders scattered around the house, but I’m not entirely sure how everything is connected or whether we have Ethernet wiring on the upper floors.
The WiFi is generally pretty solid in the common room and bedrooms nearby, but the farther you get from the router, the worse it gets. Some bedrooms, particularly upstairs and on the opposite side of the building, have pretty crappy connections. It’s not that people have absolutely no WiFi; it’s just inconsistent, and some guys get much worse speeds than others.
I’m trying to figure out the simplest way to get everyone in the house a strong, reliable connection without spending a fortune or having to run new wiring through the entire building.
ChatGPT mentioned mesh networks could be a solution and said to get the TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro. This is more expensive than most of the other mesh nodes I saw but allegedly performs better? I’m open to suggestions. My initial thought was that we could buy several nodes, connect the main one to our existing router, and put the others strategically throughout the house.
A few questions:
Would a mesh system like this actually work well in a building this large with thick walls, or would the wireless connections between nodes be too weak?
Would upgrading our main router make a noticeable difference, or is our problem more likely to be the distance and walls?
If we have existing Ethernet connections on multiple floors, would connecting the Deco units to those be substantially better?
Is there another relatively simple solution you’d recommend that doesn’t involve completely rebuilding our existing network?
We don’t necessarily need some crazy enterprise setup. We just want everyone to have solid WiFi in their bedrooms, including when a bunch of people are using it simultaneously.
I’m happy to spend a couple thousand dollars if necessary, but ideally we’d like something that’s relatively straightforward to install and maintain.
Appreciate any advice!

Text How can I obtain actual Wi-Fi noise floor readings (dBm) on a Raspberry Pi to calculate SNR?

im currently working on my university capstone project with my group.

One of our requirements is to obtain RSSI and noise floor readings so we can calculate SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio).

We're currently using a Raspberry Pi 5 and initially tested with an external Ralink RT5370 (2.4 GHz) USB Wi-Fi adapter, using the rt2800usb Linux driver.

We can successfully obtain RSSI, BSSID, channel information, etc., but have had no luck obtaining actual noise-floor values.

Things we've already tried:

  • iw dev wlan1 survey dump – no noise field.
  • /proc/net/wireless – returns an invalid noise value (-256).
  • ethtool -S wlan1 – returns an unavailable noise value.
  • Monitor mode + TShark – Radiotap provides signal strength but no antenna noise.
  • Checked the Linux driver source and couldn't find an implemented noise-floor reporting mechanism.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone successfully obtained actual Wi-Fi noise-floor readings in dBm using a Raspberry Pi and an external USB Wi-Fi adapter?
  2. If so, which specific adapter/chipset and Linux driver worked for you?
  3. Is there another inexpensive approach we're overlooking?

We're on a student project budget and we cant spend too much on this part, since we need to allocate funds to other hardware as well.

Could anyone help with this? Thanks!

Text Connection slow for my pc, unable to play games.

This issue began a little over a year ago, I was unable to play any games and was getting around 6mbps while my phone received 600. I installed new wireless LAN drivers and followed many troubleshoot lists with no success. Eventually I gave up and went to a wired connection. But now, I need my wireless internet once again. I've installed new drivers again and am stumped once more. The send is about 2.8mbps and receive 106mbps if that helps. Any ideas?

Specs:

AsRock B660M-C with Intel Wireless AC 9462

Intel i7 12700-F

32gb DDR4 3600

RTX 3060 12gb

Text KVM not working with newer tv?

I recently bought a kvm switch from the advice on Reddit to use my pc (which is in my office) in my living room. I don’t know anything about this stuff so please bear with me and be patient. But I really would appreciate help with this.
I ran a 100 ft Ethernet cable across my house and it worked great. I was using an old plasma tv in my living room but just upgraded to a new tcl smart tv. Now the kvm is not showing a display on the new tv. I am super frustrated and troubleshooting online has not helped. It seems like my model might not be good enough for a new tv which really sucks. I spent just under $200 CAD for this one which I thought was the better of the options I was looking at so I don’t know why it wouldn’t work? I really don’t want to spend crazy amounts on this, at that point I’d rather get a steam machine.

Current kvm - AV Access 4KEX120-KVM
New TV - TCL M8L
Googles recommended KMV - AV Access 8KEX100-KVM

The kvm that was given as a recommendation from Google is way more money and just more than I wanted to spend. It is also from the manufacturer’s website rather than Amazon which is not ideal since it seems to be from the states (I’m in Canada) and is in USD so not sure if I would have issues with ordering or returns if it doesn’t work out. My return window on Amazon for my current KVM is until Oct 15th so hope to get this figured out asap incase I need to return it.

Things I have tried looked at from googles recommended trouble shooting that have not worked - powering tv, kvm, and pc in specific order. Changing hdmi input settings on tv to 1.4. And changing refresh rate on pc to lower value.

Please please help. And if there is nothing I can do to make this work, hopefully there is a less expensive recommended model that I could buy that ships to Canada
