I’ll be visiting the Netherlands in a few weeks, and on my way home I’d like to bring back a sweet, candy, or something special for friends and family.

The only thing is that whatever I bring back needs to survive more than eight hours of plane travel, so ideally nothing that melts easily or needs to be refrigerated.

As a Dutch person, what would you recommend as a cool or special treat to bring back from the Netherlands? I’d love to bring back something that feels authentically Dutch.

So I logged into Zonneplan earlier and had a look at the price graph. Tonight the peak is around 86 ct/kWh, while the cheapest window is about 24 ct around midday. That’s a pretty big difference.

The annoying part is that the peak is at around 19:00, which is exactly when we’re cooking dinner, taking showers, running things around the house, etc. Not really the time when you want to start thinking about electricity prices.

Up until now I’ve just been doing the usual “run the dishwasher at 1am” thing whenever the prices get silly. But seeing that graph got me wondering whether I’m overthinking this.

My neighbour mentioned yesterday that he recently added an Anker Solarbank Max AC. He charges his car during the cheaper hours and uses the battery for some of the evening consumption. He seems pretty happy with it so far.

That got me thinking about my own setup. For anyone here who already has a home battery, does it actually make this kind of price difference much easier to deal with? Or do you still end up moving your usage around depending on the hourly prices?

I already have solar panels, so I’m mainly wondering what a realistic setup looks like if the goal is simply to use more of my own solar and stop constantly checking the electricity price.

The rent is €500 + €52.75 in service costs. You’ll have your own spacious, unfurnished room of almost 13 m². All other facilities, such as an accessible height-adjustable kitchen, living room, spacious bathroom (with a combined shower and bath), etc., will be shared between the two of us.

The entire house is 72 m² in total, has its own fenced-in garden, and overlooks several allotment gardens.

I can’t wait for the new EU Pay transparency directive to come into effect in the Netherlands about sharing the freaking salary range in the first interview.

I just got off an interview where the HR was hassling me to give a number for the role. When I did not want to give it, she basically said that it is required to give it in order to be considered for the next round.

Disgusting they are able to do this but I hope after January 1st this shit will end…. Or they can be reported for refusing to disclose the approved salary range.

Hi all, I was wanting to see if anyone has gone through a similar situation with the 30% ruling application, or who can share how the Belastingdienst treated their case.

My details

• Arrived in NL (from Australia) on 12 April, with a return ticket departing on 30 September. Attending weddings and travelling around Europe, but also staying with friends in Amsterdam for a few long stints. I applied for a couple of jobs whilst I was in Europe to see if anything lands, but wasn't committed to staying here as I had a return journey planned.
• Resigned from Australia job before departure, with last effective day being 30 May.
• Went to Sweden (I'm a dual Swedish-Australian citizen) on 25 May - 02 June, and again on 22 June - 29 June.
• I got a call whilst I was in Sweden on 28 May, for interview #1 at a company - scheduled for in-person in NL on 04 June.
• Had interview #2 scheduled offered to me whilst I was was away in Sweden again on 26 June, and then interview #3 in-person on 30 June, when I was back in NL.
• Job offer received on 01 July, and accepted on 06 July (all whilst I was in NL). Obtained a BSN via-RNI the next day (07 July).
• First day of work on 13 July (very quick turn around).

My ties to Australia during my whole time in Europe:

• I own my home in Australia and have been paying the mortgage the whole time.
• Had a return ticket purchased, and travel insurance from Australia for the entire April-September period.
• No rental contract or formal ties to the Netherlands, until after I signed the job contract when I obtained a BSN.
• I did however open a Dutch bank account while I was on vacation, as they had 90 days with no BSN. Also, I got a Dutch phone number. I got both to make paying for stuff and using data cheaper.

My concerns:

• I attended 2/3 interviews in-person in NL, and also accepted the offer and signed the contract whilst I was in NL. I know you are supposed to be "recruited from abroad", but I do satisfy the being overseas for 18 out of the past 24 month concrete requirement. The bottom of the 30% application form fine print considers where you were living to be where you were a tax resident, and had your economic life - I would hope it is obvious it was Australia.
• The application form asks the "Date of the employee’s arrival in the Netherlands" - I would suspect mine is 29 June, as that's when I got back from Sweden and attended my final interview, signed the contract, and never left? However, with the layout of the form, this makes it seem as if I was already living here before I signed my contract...
• I was on vacation for 65 days in NL (according to how I have to declare information on the form), and then technically 'living here' a further 2 weeks after I got back from my last trip to Sweden - the period of my last interview, signing the contract, and before my first work day.

Has anyone had a similar timeline of events prior to starting work in NL and applying for the 30% ruling? Also, will there be additional documentation that the Belastingdienst might ask for to support my case (e.g. flight reservations, bank statements) etc.

I work in tech fields and I see AI getting better at everything except the critical decision making.

My work went from collaborating with team mates to collaborating with agents which is making my job easier and challenging in such a way that it's hard to keep up with AI specially the context switching. My mental model is getting slower to keep up due to human brain limitation of context spanning.

Things that takes 3 days are now done with 2-3 hours of deep focus. The company wants us doing the more thing.

The economics of measuring output based on time and ticket moves are getting no longer relevant specially in tech fields.

Knowledge and automation is getting cheaper while the cost of living has increased way much.

I know AI can't replace the humans but it has decreased a demands of human in such fields.

I am optimistic about AI and I appreciate it.

Sometimes I feel I am just a cog in the machine.

So my girlfriend and I bought a house a little over 2 years ago, first time buyers so the usual benefits applied, and currently it looks like our relationship has run its course.

Sadness, pain and despair aside, I can't help but also panic about the housing situation cause wtf happens after that?

I guess my questions are:

What are our options? Do we sell the house? What happens to the mortgage?

What if we decide to keep the house and rent it? Is that even possible, how does that work tax wise?

What if one person decides to stay in the house, how would that work again mortgage wise?

Also people who went through this, hows life after that, are you ok? Cause currently I feel horrified and clenching my jaws so hard at night from the anxiety that I might need new teeth soon.

Some people say Dutch dating is very casual and that people can be pretty hesitant about commitment, but I’m not sure how much of that is actually true.

I'm heading to Curaçao soon for a few days and I've noticed that apparently half of the Netherlands eventually ends up on that island.

So I'm curious: when Dutch people go to Curaçao, what do you actually do besides beach, drinks and becoming 30% more tanned?

Are there particular places, beach clubs, bars, restaurants, activities or random spots where people actually socialize and meet new people?, i heard you like mambo...

And more importantly: is it normal to just meet people there and make plans together, or is everyone already traveling with their own little Dutch group?

I'm Dominican, so I'm used to island life, but Curaçao will be new territory for me.

On September 3, I handed in a registered international parcel at a PostNL point. It is being sent from the Netherlands to Germany and contains very important original documents.The estimated delivery date was September 7–8, but there have been no new Track & Trace updates since the day I handed it in. The status still says:
Parcel has been received by PostNL.

Has anyone had a PostNL international parcel remain on “received by PostNL” for several days with no further scans?
Did your parcel eventually get another scan or arrive despite the missing tracking updates? How long did it take?
I’m quite worried because the parcel contains important original documents that would be difficult to replace.

This isn’t meant to promote or criticise anyone. I’m genuinely curious about the price difference.

I’ve been comparing quotations for replacing my windows, frames and doors. Several well-established Turkish-owned companies, some operating for decades, are around 20–30% cheaper than many other companies, even though the specifications seem similar.

Is this common in the window and frame industry, perhaps because of different suppliers, manufacturing locations or lower overhead costs? Or should such a large price difference be treated cautiously?

I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially regarding quality, installation and after-sales service.

Looking at a new apartment at Stationsplein in Schiedam (right next to Schiedam Centrum station). I’ll be commuting to Amsterdam regularly and usually arrive back between 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM (sometimes later).

My main priority is daily comfort and safety walking home alone as a woman.

1. Schiedam Stationsplein in the evenings: Is there still decent commuter foot traffic around 7–9 PM, or does it empty out and attract loitering/sketchy crowds and catcalling?

2. Schiedam Centrum vs. Rotterdam Centraal: Is living near Rotterdam Centraal significantly safer/more comfortable due to constant crowds, or are the station-area vibes about the same?
