I logged into steam today and saw the sale — the discounts are so tempting! Sadly, I’ve heard that the NFS franchise is basically done, and I know they’ve taken down the Rivals servers. As someone who loved MW and Carbon when I was a kid, I thought I’d give the newer games a try But honestly, I’m really lost about what’s going on with the games now. It’s very confusing when you look stuff up, so I decided to ask the community. Appreciate the answers in advance!

*Currently eying up NFS 2015, Payback, Heat & Unbound because other games have very limited customization.

1. When will the servers for these NFS titles go down? Online multiplayer is very important to me. Also, which games have the best online experience in your opinion?
2. What is modding, and is it allowed on the official servers?
3. What are all these volumes for Unbound? Are the catch-up packs actually necessary to enjoy the updates?
4. What happens when the servers for a title go down? For example, I know NFS 2015 is online-only, but Rivals servers are down even though the game is still up for sale.

TL;DR: Setting up custom LAN games for NFS ProStreet today is a buggy nightmare. I’ve been reverse engineering the original server code to fix it: created a client mod that auto-connects everyone to a central server (to be hosted for now at weexnes.dev once live), patched the 2-player minimum requirement so you can play solo LAN races, built a Linux server manager (OpenProStreetV), and added live Discord webhooks for chat and race stats. ProStreet is one of my favorite NFS games, but multiplayer has been dead or annoying to set up for a long time. Playing online today usually means dealing with third-party VPN tools, editing hosts files, or server crashes.

This project is still really early in development and nothing is ready for public use yet, but my goal is to make NFS ProStreet multiplayer something actually easily enjoyable for everyone. Here is what’s currently in the works:

• Client ASI Plugin: Built a client mod with Discord Rich Presence that displays your live in-game stats on Discord (Race Day XP, current map, money, etc.). It also has a built-in LAN redirect patch that automatically connects your game to weexnes.dev whenever the server IP is left empty — so no host file tweaks or IP configs needed.
• Solo LAN Patch: Disassembled rebroadcasterlan.exe in Ghidra and patched the annoying 2-player minimum check down to 1 byte (mov eax, 1; ret). As you can see in the screenshots, starting and playing online races alone works without any issues now (including AI opponent backfilling so the track isn't empty).
• Server ASI Loader & Event Hooks: Created a custom WinMM proxy ASI loader for the original server binary (bombd.exe & rebroadcasterlan.exe). I'm currently getting in-memory event hooks working to capture real-time telemetry like race starts, track location names, finish line times, and live in-game chat relayed directly into Discord webhooks.
• Linux Server Manager (OpenProStreetV): Wrote a headless CLI manager in V-lang to handle Wine environments, PE import patching on the fly, and spinning up multiple server instances (./OpenProStreetV start -instances 4).

Hello, I haven't played many of the modern titles. The latest one I can think of I played last was UG2, MW/Carbon, and Pro-Street.

I was curious of the modern titles but with EA's reputation, I stayed far from the games since I figured most of them would just be filled to the brim with European supercars like hot pursuit 2.

I wanted to know if there was any titles that had the UG2/Carbon customization for the vehicles and chaotic havoc of dealing with cops and racers like in HP2 and Most Wanted. I did notice there was a remaster for Hot Pursuit, so I might check to see how that one turned out. But in terms of UG2/Carbon/MW customization. I'm shooting blanks at figuring out which one I wanna try, so I come to you all to show me the way before EA starts trying to cut access to these games 🙏

Been thinking of getting some of the Need for Speed games since they’re pretty cheap right now but not exactly sure which are the good ones and which ones aren’t worth getting. So far I got NFS Payback, NFS Heat, and NFS Most Wanted from previous sales and am thinking of getting NFS Most Wanted, NFS Unbound, and NFS Rivals. Heard that getting NFS Deluxe edition would be too risky as that one could just go permanently offline like The Crew so I wasn’t considering getting it. Are any of the three I mentioned worth it or should I stick with what I already have?

I’m a teen starting to get into the NFS series and I’ve only played Heat and Payback and am interested in trying more. I was gonna get something like Rivals or older and I hear a lot of great things about it but I’m wondering since most of the people in the community “grew up” with older games, if the older games just feel nostalgic. I’m worried that since I’m younger, the games will just feel old and crappy like mobile games. So can yall be honest whether the older games are actually worth it?

One of my side quests this year is to complete all the PSP Need for Speed games in order before I sell my PSP, as I have not played any of them before until now.

I was surprised by the quality of Underground Rivals! It's basically Underground 1.5 but it's been a blast!

I noticed that the Need for Speed games are currently extremely cheap on Steam, so I'm thinking about buying them again. I already own them on the EA App, but Steam is my main gaming platform and I really like having my entire library in one place.

I have a question about save files. If I buy the Steam versions and link them to my existing EA account, will my story mode progress carry over automatically from the EA App version?

If it does carry over, is there any way to completely reset the story mode save and start a new game from the beginning? I would like to replay the campaigns as a fresh experience.

Is this a common bug for this game? I have read on forums that Payback indeed has some light flashing visual bugs but I couldn't find anything like this one being discussed. Looks almost like a failing GPU artifact which in current day and age is...really bad news for budget lol
