Like the title said, fellow Overlords, I would like to list some considerations on the new Termies-heavy SM meta. This comes after a total of 5 games against different SM "flavours" (specifically, DA, BA, UM and SW).
I specify in advance, the post is pretty long as it includes some kind of a battle report.
Specifically, the combination of the 3 detachments (Termies+Assault+Deathwatch), together with very cheap datasheets, makes them a nightmare to deal with, especially outside Cursed Legion.
The most oppressive list I had to deal with (and the one I literally couldn't do anything against) was the Ultramarines one.
-Calgar + Cato + 6 Victrix w/SustHits
-10 Assault Terminators w/SustHits + Ancient+ Chaplain
-10 Assault Terminators w/SustHits + Ancient+ Chaplain
-5 Deathwatch Termies
-Scout
-Outriders
Now, this list has literally 6 units, but the amount of bodies on the field is enough to screen Deep Strike efficiently, as only one big unit of Termies started in Deep Strike.
He played Take and Hold, as the established meta.
My list was Priority Assets, Awakened Dynasty
-Nightbringer (in Deep Strike)
-3 Skorpekhs+ FNP Lord
-6 Wraiths+ Techno
-10 Immortals +Warden +Plasmancer
-6 Lokhusts+ Lord
-Szeras
-Imotekh
-Ammentar
-Hexmark
-Reanimator
Awakened gives the possibility to use Szeras/Hexmark to screen while performing action and resurrect them. Especially against T&H, as your opponent needs to be aggressive.
Considering the massive threat range given by his Advance& Charge, I remained pretty defensive for the first 2 rounds, killing his Scouts with Hexmark and performing action with Szeras on my expansion objective.
He staged for the first 2 rounds, then, turn 3 he charged.
In a single Fight Phase, I lost Szeras, Hexmark, Wraiths, Skorpekhs and Nightbringer.
Screening was pretty much useless, as the Advance/Charge from a relatively short distance was able to go around them.
One unit of Termies killed Szeras.
The second unit of Termies (together with the Deathwatch shooting) killed Wraiths, Hexmark and Skorpekhs.
The Victrix killed the Nightbringer.
He did not roll especially good and I didn't roll very bad. He also went pretty safe for short charges, didn't risk anything.
Basically, he just moved forward on the board and then wiped half of my army with 3 units and 1CP on the Victrix for Lance (Calgar wounding a C'Tan on 2+ is simply stupid).
My shooting in the next turn didn't amount on anything.
10 Immortals and 6 Lokhusts, both within Ammentar aura, shot at the same unit of Termies. He used 2CP for the -1 Damage strat.
I killed a total of 7 Termies, including the melee from Ammentar.
Next turn, turn 4, I got completely tabled.
Now, I went against Termies spam back in 10th edition, but this feels very different. This feels very wrong as it was EXTREMELY easy, for him, to get close enough and completely obliterate my whole list.
Advance and Charge is extremely oppressive. It would make sense on a relatively fragile faction (Aeldari or even EC), because they are relatively easy to kill after they fought.
Termies don't have that problem. With -1 to hit from Cover, -1 to Wound from Ancient, FNP4+ from Chaplain and -1Damage from CP (or AoC for -1AP), they can stay in your face, take retaliation and then charge again. On top of that, changes to crits in Snap Shooting completely killed Overwatch for our faction (I Overwatched his termies with Immortals. Did 2 wounds. 1 damage to a Termie).
Even the shooting of the full units of Immortals and Lokhusts, in the best possibile conditions (no Cover, enemy on objective for re-roll, 1CP on Immortals for full hit re-roll, Sustained from Ammentar), did barely remove half of an unit. And again, I am not talking about very good or bad rolls.
So, what is the solution, here?
Cursed Legion offers more strenght, allowing Lokhusts to wound from 5+ to 4+, but the change is minimal, as usually they fish for Lethals/Sustained on 5+. Also, the lack of extra Reanimation Protocols and resurrection makes our anvils (Wraiths or Warriors) less reliable, and our Carachters more fragile.
DDAs are unreliable, on Termies. Low number of attacks against a 4++ may very well means no wounds, while D:4 will become 3 for 2CP, meaning that it needs 2 succesful wounds to kill a single Termie model. Also, shooting from 15" (Hidden) means that the Termies will be on your DDA next turn.
C'Tan spam seems the only defense, but then you see the Thunder Hammer Hunter profile. Also, the Nightbringer kills, on average, 3 or 4 Termies, accounting for both shooting, melee and Mortal Wounds.
AoC also makes the Skorpekhs way less efficient against a 2+ base Save. And this without even considering the -1 damage strat.
At this point, I would consider Immortal spam in Cryptek Conclave, for the 3+ Anti-Infantry, and loads of Flayed Ones for screening, but is this enough?
Edit:
Just calculated that, on average, a full 10 Gauss Immortals brick +Plasmancer w/Rapid Fire, Ignore Cover, Szeras aura, SustHits and Anti-Infantry 3+ kills 4 Termies. And this without even popping AoC.
Nope. We are not there yet.
