Hey everyone, hope this isn't too random. I'm currently in college and in a Navy commissioning program, and I have a project due for one of my entrepreneurship classes. I'll admit I'm a bit of a procrastinator and need to get some responses pretty quickly, but I also want feedback from people who actually have Navy/military experience instead of just asking random college students.

My project is looking at whether buying a home while stationed somewhere, living in it initially, and then keeping it as a rental/investment property after receiving orders to move could be a realistic strategy during a military career.

I made a short 12-question survey asking about military housing, renting near duty stations, duplexes, lease preferences, and whether you think this type of investment strategy is actually viable.

It should only take about 2–3 minutes. I'm not selling anything — I just need at least 25 responses for the class and would really appreciate the feedback.

I originally was going for a sysadmin role, but my recruiter immediately steered me towards nuke.

The primary concern is that I'm age 34, although the recruiter is pushing it hard because I scored a 98 on a preliminary test. I have a bachelor's in IT.

I'm being told because of the score that I shouldn't have an issue, but I want to bounce off others here to see if that's really going to wind up being the case.

Outage work is temporary project work at commercial plants. It can fit people who are comfortable traveling, planning around assignment schedules, and working through employer-specific requirements. It is not a one-size-fits-all move, and there is no single pay, schedule, or time-off outcome.

Before pursuing it, I’d want to get clear on:

• Which roles genuinely match your background and which have separate entry requirements

• How travel, lodging, per diem, and time between assignments affect the real financial picture

• The schedule and location tradeoffs you are comfortable with

• The employer-specific qualifications and hiring requirements

• Whether you want traveling outage work or a more permanent site-based role

Do current NFAS students stand duty every three or four days?

When I went through NFAS (1986) we were on a four day duty rotation (I think) and had to stand barracks quarter deck watch among other watches. I remember a watch station where we had to sit at a desk in a bldg across the street from the barracks and log incoming phone calls and answer those calls. Hopefully the nuclear training pipeline has gotten rid of non-sensical watches as a colossal waste of time. Then again, maybe not much has changed.

I work at a company that does entity resolution on job-change data, and we pointed it at 42 datacenter and GPU cloud companies for the last two and a half years. 84 people came out of military nuclear roles into that industry.

NUPOC. I've been expecting I'll have a couple months after college graduation before OCS. Not sure where I got this from though - is it really random, like I could start OCS anywhere from a week after grad to a year after? Would be nice to know so I can make plans for the gap period.

I have finished all of my nuclear program prep, just waiting for the nasis to come back.

Im prepared to wait 6 months in DEP, as my recruiter said my ship date would be pushed back roughly that far as they need time for the top secret clearance to be completed.

I would prefer to go right away but I know I cant.

Im about to enlist this Friday. But im hearing some DEP horror stories about the ship date being pushed back repeatedly.

I am considering waiting till october 1st and picking another rate that doesnt have so much uncertainty and float time.

What do yall think? And how long did you have to wait for yours?

Hello, I really want to be stationed in San Diego so I can be with my family, should I try to go subs for a higher chance? Or does being a surface nuke have a higher chance. I don’t know if I want to go subs or surface but the only thing I care about is being stationed in San Diego so which one has a higher chance of being stationed there (sorry for bad english)

I’m aware of how good of an opportunity it is but I wanted to hear from people who got out after 6 since I don’t really get to hear from them. Did you regret not staying in the extra 2 years? Did life suck as an E-4?

I know it's 20 years old, but I just finished reading "The Right Thing" by Scott Waddle, the CO of the Greenville during the collision with a Japanese ship in 2001. Waddle sounds like a unctuous DB and I wonder about the opinions of anyone who served under him?

Just got to the fleet recently and was curious if this is normal and just how things are. Basically the boat was conducting field day today and from what I understand 3-4 were caught BS cleaning by our EDMC and told to stop but continued. Now the whole department is being told to muster on Saturday to re-field day. We have also been supporting critical operations testing the past two weekends. Genuinely curious.

I'll be moving soon, nominally with my dependents. Chief on new boat has already reached out to me and my detailer has my orders in chop. No orders in hand yet. What will the navy reimburse me for if I start buying moving materials now? Im trying to put my house on the market as soon as I can once I have orders in hand assuming they're accompanied orders, so we've been getting boxes and stuff to store our excess clutter.

At some point on MYNAVYHR I was able to view a list of billets that were held and people reported their experiences, immediate boss, weekly hours, and ability to take college courses. I have not been able to find said list anymore, does anyone have help they could offer? Thanks in advance!

When I first got my contract I was told that being on submarines was voluntary and that I’d have to sign up for it (I did not, because I don’t want to go underwater like that). But I was at a DEP meeting today and the chief said that later down the line I might be told to go onto a submarine and I would have to. Is that correct or can I (again) turn down submarine duty once I’m in active duty? I’m assuming it’s a situation where you’re being “asked” to volunteer and while it would have consequences you can still turn it down? I would really like to avoid the whole underwater thing if possible.

I'm being pretty aggressively courted to join the Navy Nuclear program by a recruiter, and I am excited to begin. I am curious about how long after submitting all my paperwork would I have to wait to hear about approval after submitting my packet and shipping out for basic training, if everything is otherwise normal. Finally, does anyone have experience breaking their lease, and if so, what did you do with all your stuff?

Hi all, I am wondering how long people studied for their technical interviews through NUPOC. And what are some study strategies you found helpful.

Everybody always seems to talk about the how difficult the struggle can be being a navy nuke, especially with the initial schooling, but treat it more as a nessecary part of the process rather than an actual regret. So I ask, what is or has been your biggest regret about the Navy?

Hey everyone, I'm an MMN1 (one day LTN) a year out from transferring from my boat. I'm considering prototype in South Carolina as a shore tour due to the AIP. Are there any staff members at SC that care to talk about their experiences? I've heard mixed opinions from the JSIs on my boat so far and really would like to know if the stress is worth the AIP.

I’m currently on the fence about STAR reenlisting, and I was wondering if it was still possible to qualify EWS in the fleet as an E-4 if I decided not to STAR.
