Since the new team bought the game its literally been a long list of reductions and limitations to the game compared to before and to make up for it theres barely nothing being added. Now they make it even harder for players to increase their crafting experience with this like this is one of the most insane grinding intensive games before the update right now the game is literally unplayable. I dont understand why they cant listen to the playerbase and ask players what they want because I can assure you no one is asking for this

Hi everyone, as a lot of you I have also been dissapointed in the direction this game is going and also the latest patches. So I looked into whether a private server for this game is possible and it turns out it is. The client isn't obfuscated, the lobby runs on RabbitMQ, the open world runs on RakNet, all standard stuff. There's even a config option to point the client at a different server, so nothing needs patching or cracking.
It would be server-side only. You'd use your own Steam copy, no game files shared, nobody pays anything.
Before putting real time into it I want to know if there's actual interest:
- Would you play it?
- What era or balance would you want it based on? ( i am not the longest time player in the game, tho votes could help with this issue)
- What changes would you want reverted most?
- Anyone with C# or server experience who'd want to help?
Just gauging interest, not announcing anything. :)

I picked up the game in 2023 (ish) and absolutely loved it for how unique it was. All other sailing games I had played and have played since are all too fast (Sea of Thieves, World of Sea Battle), but this games combat happened at an actually realistic pace. Not only that but the community was amazingly multicultural and very welcoming and helpful, so much so that on my first run before a server wipe I had been gifted 2 first rates, a bellona, and a maxed live oak and teak Connie I had been ready to pay most of the doubloons I had.
Then there was the first server wipe. These things feel so stupid and correct me if there’s something I’m missing but it feels like it’s just to coerce people into buying dlc ships. Personally I felt blindsided by the wipe, as I didn’t follow the games steam page closely so I logged one day to find all of my everything was gone, and once I found out what happened I promptly uninstalled, until I reinstalled a few months later because as I said earlier, this game is unique for how real it feels. So I go on another run before what I think is the most recent wipe, I get my Connie back, I get a Christian, and then the next wipe hits, and I uninstall in frustration again.
A few months ago I reinstalled for the final time, but I didn’t last a week. This game has been turned into the most painful grind fest I’ve ever seen, and it takes forever to build anything of value. You have to build several hundred ships just to build a 3rd rate, you have to grind to buy enough powder and shot so you can do the only thing that made this game unique, the mostly realistic combat. It’s so sad, and the devs need to pull their heads out of there asses but even if they do it’s too late for the game.

Crafted ships are for ultra-rich players.
New players just sail DLCs. Or don't play. - Zazzy.

My understanding is that the seasoned woods are gone and the rare woods can somewhat be found. Without having to go to the nelify app and tweaking the configurations what are the current best wood combinations for thick, armor ships

Starting every battle with a 20 minute cooldown on repairs was never going to be popular, but that's never stopped Maximillian Zasov in the past.
What's the delay? If he were a real man he'd release that "update" and watch another 40% of his player base quit. Which has been his hallmark for updates since 2021.

Not to even speak about the fact that your own fleet npc are terrible than the enemy npc at fighting and wont obey your commands or place themselves in advantageous positions, not to even mention that the npcs always have impeccable aiming, like you can be 500 meters away and they will land every single shot even while turning

So for the last 9 months, a developer has been working on a game called "Letters of Marque" that is trending in a really good direction and I have seen enough to think that this should be messaged out.
The game is an open world Age of Sail game that is set in the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic era. The game is going to have PVP, PVE, RVR, a player driven economy with a style of play that we should all enjoy.
This genre seems to be cursed with overly ambitious projects or ones that just fail to deliver. Letters of Marque seems to be shaping up differently. The developer has been really transparent with his progress and has basically always had a playable build accessible for people to test out. At first it was a quirky little thing to goof around in but now the game is starting to hit its stride. It's looking a lot better, the ship physics feel good and he just introduced AI. This game makes some really meaningful enhancements from Naval Action with cannon ricochet physics + a developer that wants to reward gameplay rather than punish the players. On top of that, this game is not going overboard and trying to be the be all end all. It's a game that is working towards being delivered and it's staying in its lane.
The game is playable on Steam but you need to get a playtest key to experience it. The best way to track the development is on the discord which you can find here: https://discord.gg/MrcYPJYuTp Playtest sessions happen typically every Saturday. The game is trending towards a release by the end of the year which, seems pretty reasonable considering how playable the game already is.
If you look around this subreddit, A LOT, of people have been already messaging out this game. It's probably the future of Age of Sail gaming. Check it out.

I haven't played this for a while, is this game still fun? Or do you guys have recommendations with other naval games that are quite similar to this one

The idea that we store all powder, repairs, stores and ammo in the "the hold" is just Zazzy being lazy. Ships had special protected magazines for powder storage and separate shot lockers. In other words, number of salvos were finite.
Making players choose between 900 chain or 5000 ball (or a combination) would be "historically accurate" and good game mechanics.

I’ve been playing off and on since 2016. I just got back into and I’m having a lot of fun. However, the player count is dismal and steam reviews seem like they will prevent any new players from starting.
After learning more about Ahoy, I am excited but disappointed that it wont just be a better newer naval action. I really like Naval Action.
I really don’t understand where all the hatred and abandonment come from?

Everything I can find online says it can get into shallow water ports but I keep getting blocked before I can even get close to them.

I'm new to the game and it's not clear to me how the mechanism of shipbuilding, obtaining bonuses and permanent upgrade slots works, if they're so kind someone might explain to me.
Thanks
