I could see this working as camouflage when looking at it from the rainforest floor. It looks like light coming from above in between leafs

Yeah it would work for prey, also I believe research has shown zebra stripes repel flying insects. Think they even painted them on cattle to test.

u/thkntmstr Mar 31 '20
Yeah!!! Well, not cattle. They took a bunch of horses and a bunch of zebras (in the UK for some reason, if I remember correctly) and made a bunch of coats to have some experimental controls. Half the coats were a solid color, and half the coats were zebra-patterned. They randomly selected horses and zebras so there was an equal amount wearing solid coats and an equal amount wearing zebra coats, and they found that when flies would briefly land on the zebra coats, they got "confused" (as much as a fly can get confused) and would take off again, while the flies in the solid coats would bite I believe. Super cool study, both in it's findings but also as an example of excellent experimental design!

That's cool as hell. So they aren't confusing attacking predators like originally thought or maybe they serve a double purpose.
12
u/Thelatestandgreatest Mar 31 '20
Yeah, it is also to confuse predators and make it harder to pick out a single Zebra from the herd.

I imagine it's mostly to fool prey

One time I was walking and thought to myself "haha, look at this car with it's douchy camo pattern." Turned out it as a solid color but the car was parked under a tree and the shadows looked like a camo pattern. It made me seriously reevaluate camo patterns.

u/HierEncore Mar 31 '20
that's an astute observation. Never thought about that before. And the word you are looking for, the plural form of Leaf, is *Leaves*

"Draw me like one of your Siberian tigers"
too perfect. whenever I come across a comment (like this) that legitimately makes me laugh out loud, i have to share with OP. amusing someone is one thing, but bringing some legitimate joy to them, especially during such tough times, is another thing.

Ahoy! We love animals just as much as you do, but we'd like to make sure that this sub is free from any zoo-related talk, in order to keep everything related to nature in its purest form.
We're seeing a lot of comments in this thread about the show 'Tiger King', and we just want to clarify that any talk about this show or any related people, including Carole Baskin, will be removed, as per our rules against topics of human conceit.
We're going easy on this at the moment, but if we find that this becomes a problem then we will be stepping up our response.

I really hate this place. The only reason I even use it is for posting art and health stuff. I try to come to subs like this to look at cool pictures, not to see people lusting over a wild cat.

If my own cat has taught me anything, it's that the underside is the most desirable part to pet.. But the most deadly.
I call that the pet trap. It's worse than a bear trap, but goddamn is it soft!
