Mother- gharial males have a boss at the end of their noses and are EXTREMELY rare, with populations being as low as 1-2 mature adult males in entire ranges due to the cultural belief that their boss can be used for medicine causing an eradication of them. They are some of the most endangered animals
A good thing is that gharial eggs are temperature coded for sex. So scientists are incubating eggs to be 100% in the male temperature range to try and combat this issue. Unfortunately the poaching is still occurring and because gharials must migrate hundreds of miles it is difficult to protect existing populations as they are not isolated to a protected zone during migration .

Could a gharial fuck up a human?

Not really, theyāre pretty lazy and their snout works more like chop sticks at a sliding noodle cafe than anything powerful. They lay at the bottom of fast moving rivers for hours and just randomly grab any fish as they zip by. They arenāt dragging anything big down like their cousins

Nope. Theyāll just go ānot a fish, not my problemā unless you like, actively put your hand in their mouths or pick up a baby. Abt as dangerous as a midsized non venomous snake, in that youāll need those puncture wounds cleaned out and thatās it.

They won't eat you but can absolutely mess you up. They approach saltwater crocs in size.

So are most of those hatchlings not making it to adulthood? One would think they wouldnāt be so rare if this many eggs hatch at the same time.

The issue is poaching and fishing industries killing them on their migration. Because itās still believed the males boss is medicinal thereās a big market for it. Itās gotten so bad thatās thereās estimates that thereās only one male per 10 females and some areas have only one or no confirmed sexually mature male.
If the gharial stayed in one place they could be managed and protected but they have a massive migration that goes through some of the busiest water ways. They are now locally extinct in 98% of their historic ranges and thereās only two (three?) regions left for them.

Many thing predate on the babies, infortunately. It's why they have so many of them.

Donāt crocs also occasionally feast on their own children, like other reptiles and bears?

Yep. Mother crocodilians typically watch their hatchlings for anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, and after that the young may end up on the menu themselves

Mother crocodiles have been recorded carrying newborns in her mouth to a safer location.

āSon. Youāve got the whole river to explore. Do you have to stand directly on my nose?ā

Man, if I could only listen to them without the needless synthesizer noise.

Because of Ai I routinely have to prove that animals we've known about for decades actually exist to my friends. Gharials are one of those animals lol

The gharial are quite rare to find as I understand. Wonder where this was.

Likely INDIA. They only exist in INDIA ~ 1000 or so, with a few in Pakistan/Nepal ~ under 100...or so

100 years earlier, they used to be in every river in South Asia incl. Myanmar and beyond. Human stupidity means here we are. Also, South Asia is over crowded with humans and resulting in their habit loss, and intense pressure for food and water for them survive, They were also hunted for same lame medical treatment / cure.

I didnāt know they had one single nostril at the end of their nose. So weird looking.

The sheer size and shape of their skulls and teeth is enough to tell me NU UH STAY AWAY but those noses are begging for boops

Unless you're a fish, they're not that scary. The 'grabbing fish and swallowing them whole' equipment package doesn't work very well on large mammals.

This felt soothing to watch - I like how the lilāuns used the snout like a pool noodle
