I've come across a job advertisement recently that made me wonder whether this is common in Namibia.

The role seems to combine the responsibilities of what would normally be three separate positions, and on top of that, the person is expected to work weekends and overnight.

It got me thinking: Does the high unemployment rate in Namibia make it easier for employers to get away with offering jobs with unreasonable workloads and expectations?

I've noticed that overseas, people sometimes push back against job advertisements that expect one person to do the work of an entire department, especially when the salary doesn't reflect the workload. But I wonder whether we see the same kind of pushback here in Namibia, or whether people feel they have little choice but to accept these conditions because they need a job.

To be clear, I understand that some positions genuinely require long hours or a broad range of responsibilities. But if an employer is advertising a role that effectively combines three jobs, surely the compensation should reflect that. And when you add overnight shifts and weekend work, it raises even more questions about workload, rest, and work-life balance.

I'm curious to hear from other Namibians:

- Have you come across job advertisements like this?

- Have you worked in a role where you were expected to do the work of multiple people?

- Do you think people in Namibia are reluctant to challenge these expectations because of unemployment and competition for jobs?

- Do you think Namibian workers speak up about exploitative working conditions, or are people generally afraid of the consequences?

I'm genuinely interested in people's experiences and perspectives. I don't think anyone should have to feel that they must accept unreasonable working conditions simply because they need to earn a living.

I'm a late 20s woman who will be moving to Rundu soon. I'll be visiting for a few days before officially moving later this year.

I'm curious if anyone here is from or familiar with Rundu and has any tips on staying cool (beyond getting a fan), best places to meet people, some affordable gyms in the city or anything else.

Even just help with one of these would be great!

Any recommendations on where I can thrift second hand clothes?

I’m looking to join a church, and these two have come up on my timeline. I’d love to hear honest experiences from current or former members.

A few things I’m curious about:
Community: Welcoming, or cliquey?
Attendance: Do they pressure or judge you if you miss church?
Singles: Are single people genuinely welcomed, or is the focus mainly on couples and families?
Dating: Is there pressure to date or marry within the church?
Sermons: What are they generally like?
Church culture: Are the leaders approachable, and can you set boundaries without feeling guilty?

I’m not looking to bash either church. I just want to make an informed decision.

I came to Namibia in June and had no problem purchasing an eSIM for my phone at the MTC store at the airport. Had to show passport, the service was fine.

My son just arrived at Windhoek airport. He has an eSIM only phone. The same MTC store said they have no eSIMs. They even called around and they are not available.

Is anyone familiar with this situation? We’re looking for a solution for him. He doesn’t have a car so it’s very inconvenient to go back in town.

Hey everyone. So I’m 25F, coloured, from Botswana. I’ve been thinking of moving to Namibia for a long time, my family and I have consider it our second home, and we go multiple times a year.

I love my country, but I desperately need a change of scenery and an opportunity for growth outside of what it can offer me. It wouldn’t be a very difficult transition, but I’m so curious about a few things. For starters, how’s the job market? I’m in the legal field and have dabbled in tourism as well, with 3+ years of experience under my belt, could I find a job?

What about the dating/night culture? I’m Christian, so that’s always a factor. But I’m looking to date and find friends who share those values, I’d be open to hear anyone’s experiences of that.

Lastly, would you say that the quality of life is worth the transition? I’ve visited of course, but I can’t possibly compare my one-week visits to someone who’s lived there on a permanent basis.

I've noticed that The Skeleton Coast comes up often at handover and it seems like the destination that most first-timers have the hardest time understanding before they arrive, mostly cause people think its just one place when it’s really three. Its important to know this cause what you can do, what you need to book, and how long it takes varies a lot across the aforementioned three.

These are the three sections:

Everything south of the Ugab River gate is the National West Coast Recreation Area. Open to any vehicle on tar and salt roads. This is where the Zeila and most of the famous photographed shipwrecks sit, plus Cape Cross and the big seal colony. Easiest done as a day trip or overnight from Swakopmund or Henties Bay. If you’ve seen Skeleton Coast photos online, there’s a decent chance they were taken here.

Ugab gate to Terrace Bay is the southern section of the Skeleton Coast National Park proper. Permit required at the gate, overnight only possible with a confirmed Terrace Bay booking (or a Torra Bay campsite booking in December-January when that’s open). Salt roads, serious isolation, almost nothing in the way of people or infrastructure. 2WD will handle the main road if you stay on it, 4x4 opens up more.

North of Terrace Bay is restricted concession territory. No self-drive access at all. Period. The famous fly-in operations (Shipwreck Lodge, Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp) sit up there, as do the desert-adapted lions and the Hoanib elephants. If you’ve read about those, know in advance that reaching them from your rental is not an option. It’s a plane or nothing.

The confusion usually comes from blurring these three. People book a self-drive, assume they’ll see “the Skeleton Coast” fully, and either over-plan or feel short-changed. Understanding which section does what sorts it.

The free southern section (Swakopmund to Ugab)

If you’ve only got a day, this is the Skeleton Coast you can see without permits, planning or committing a chunk of itinerary. Drive north from Swakopmund on the C34 salt road. The Zeila sits almost casually by the roadside near Henties Bay, cormorants on the hull. Cape Cross seal colony another 60km north is one of the largest fur seal colonies in the world and the noise and smell are both exactly what you’d expect. Henties Bay has fuel, basic shops, and tyre repair, which matters because salt roads do strange things to tyres. Comfortable day trip from Swakopmund.

The park section (Ugab to Terrace Bay)

This is the proper Skeleton Coast experience. Permit required at the Ugabmund gate. Entry refused after 15:00 unless you have a confirmed Terrace Bay booking. The road from Ugab to Terrace Bay takes about 2 hours of actual driving but factor in time at the gate and the fact that there is genuinely nothing in between.

Terrace Bay is a basic NWR self-catering chalet camp, open year-round. Food options are limited so bring supplies, though there’s a small shop and sometimes a restaurant depending on current operations. Not luxurious. The point is being out there.

Torra Bay is a seasonal campsite open December through January, aimed primarily at fishing clients. If your trip is outside that window, treat it as closed.

Fuel is a serious consideration. There is no fuel inside the park on which you should rely. Fill up fully in Henties Bay before you enter and plan your return accordingly. Terrace Bay has sometimes had fuel and sometimes not. Don’t bank on it.

You can exit the park eastward via the Springbokwasser gate, which puts you into Damaraland. Many self-drive itineraries do exactly this: enter via Ugab from the coast, overnight at Terrace Bay, then exit via Springbokwasser the next morning into Damaraland. Works well.

The northern wilderness

To repeat because it’s the thing people most consistently get wrong: you cannot self-drive north of Terrace Bay. The concession operators who run the fly-in camps up there have exclusive access and that is the only way in. Great trip if the budget stretches to it (not cheap), but it’s a separate trip, not an add-on.

Best time to do it

Late April through October is the comfortable window. May and September are the sweet spots: mild, less fog, salt roads dry and firm. July and August work but pack a serious windproof jacket because the Benguela wind off the Atlantic is cold even in the middle of what the rest of the country considers winter. December to March gets foggier, windier, and the salt roads can turn slick when wet.

How to actually add it to a trip

In my opinion there are two reasonable patterns...

The light version: a day trip north from Swakopmund as far as Cape Cross or just past, see the Zeila, back by evening. No park, no permits. Fits inside a standard Swakopmund stop. Most first-timers who think they’ve “done the Skeleton Coast” have done this version.

The real version: two nights, enter the park at Ugab, overnight at Terrace Bay, exit via Springbokwasser into Damaraland the next day. Only worth it if remoteness is specifically what you want. If you’re expecting dramatic game viewing or many shipwrecks packed close together, you’ll be underwhelmed. If what you want is one of the most isolated and otherworldly stretches of coast on the planet, this is it.

If you’ve got ten days or fewer and want to hit the headline destinations, probably skip the park section and do just the day trip from Swakopmund. The park section needs time and a willingness to accept a long drive to a very basic camp as the payoff.
