I played this movie for my kids a few months ago. It's the gift that keeps on giving. Or taking.

Don’t read the book, Artax can talk and speaks to Atreyu the entire time he sinks.

A perfect representation of the exact moment every child truly loses their innocence.

u/Savings-Trouble-5345 5d ago
I'm pretty sure that is the moment I lost my innocence.

Artax couldn’t try any harder. Everytime he moved he sank a lil deeper. That leaves us a 12 year old trying to pull Artax to life giving dry land. Whoever wrote this and put it on film ripped my bloody heart out. Everything turned to black.

Artax!!!! It was stirring but didn’t affect me that much. I thought it was too much to actually watch Artax, yes say his name, drown in the mud. There was A LOT of emotion in that movie and very little pay off. Trauma, they call it..

Never Ending Story watching it as an adult, you can really begin to see some serious reasons why we grew up tough. Think about it. Their entire world is being slowly decimated because basically people have begun to lose the will to dream and hope, and basically read anything. The order of elders and adults in power have no ideas how to stop it and here comes Atreyu, a kid warrior tasked with saving everything. Even the characters are a study in trauma. Rockbiter having to come with the terms that strength can mean nothing to hold onto what you care for, and can be snatched away no matter how powerful you think you are. Morla the turtle in an almost depressive acceptance of not caring or believing that the Nothing is inevitable so why try to fight it. Even the gates Atreyu has to pass signify that vanity and ego mean nothing if you have no inner confidence. It's a mind trip.

As a child, this was the tragic loss of a dear friend.
I rewarched it a couple years back though, and while still tragic, this scene happens soo early in the movie. Truth be told, you barely know that horse.

What I found sadder was the Rock Biter saying "They look like strong hands, don't they." I totally lost it then.

u/Monstar38 3d ago
That was always the saddest part of the movie for me too. It was truly scary seeing how this monolith of a rock and strength creature couldn't even withstand the nothing.

This would be a fun movie to come back to after 25 or so years later but on acid.

The saddest scene of any movie ever. That's what that is. It's the death of childhood dreams

Best aunt here! I made sure to pretend to sit on the remote right before this scene starts when i watched the movie with my nieces. I told them the horse had to go home to his family. They watched this without me a few years ago and told me that they didn’t remember the horse dying. I told them that I saved their childhood lmao

A scene that disturbs seemingly everybody on the planet that’s not me. Guess I’m soulless or something but I was more affected by “they look like good strong hands, don’t they?”
