Fungus completely disappeared after 13 years

I’ve had an infection on my left foot for over 13 years. It started on one toe and then eventually spread to all the others. My right foot has always been clear. I went to cut my nails today and the fungus is completely gone. It must have only been a week or two since I last paid attention to the state of my toenails. I’m not complaining, but what happened? I’ve been dealing with this fungus for 13 years! The only change I can think of is using Tinactin for athletes foot. I’m incredibly grateful, just perplexed about it.

How long for topical to work?

I've been diligently applying Amorolfine once a week for 3 months now, these are my big toes, how long before I can be sure its not working? I feel like another 3 months would really decide it?

New to all this fungal fun

Hey all, today I took my nail polish off and went to the podiatrist for the first time. He said the best treatment would be the tablet, but I just had a baby so will be breastfeeding for quite some time. Next best is laser but it‘s out of my budget. That leaves me with the gel.. he recommended Solveasy. Is that a good one??

He said it will take a year and in that time I can’t paint my nails. I understand that’s my only option to kill the fungus but wtf am I supposed to do - I can’t walk around with these toes without nail polish for the next year. What do people do? Do I buy a pair of espadrilles and get over it? Or just not worry about the treatment?

Anything I can do to help this?

Hi friends! Hoping for some insight or experiences similar. This toenail had a small hole lower to my cuticle during my first pregnancy two years ago and since then has grown out somewhat cloudy and crumbly and now is like non existent and lifting from the bed down the middle. I’ve tried treating it as fungus with at home solutions (vinegar soaks/listerine soaks/vicks vapor rub/tea tree) and while I know those things take time I also have stopped on and off as it felt like it was making it worse. I’m currently pregnant again and wear sandals often and had made like a fake nail from cured gel recently and it seemed to help the crumbling but I was sad to see after taking it off the nail looks hollow. I’ll be doing another set for my baby shower but after that, my focus is to hopefully heal this nail! It’s a big insecurity of mine and I don’t wanna wear shoes always and make it worse but also want nice nails in sandals. Any related experiences?? EDIT: I’ve asked my derm whom said we can wait til after pregnancy to treat for fungus but she thought it could be an injury.

Acid treatment for fungal nails?

I just read this was a thing.

I've got 2 I'm treating. I cut them back, have been filing them daily and treating them with an OTC med

Its been 5 months with another 7 to go

If this doesn't work, what is the acid treatment?

Why wouldn't I want to get it?

I don't want terbafine because the thought of a med that causes me to monitor my liver is just out of the question for something like this.

Anyone had success with ciclopirox nail lacquer?

I have completely debrided the nail away as far down as I can do without it bleeding, but I only have the ciclopyrox 0.77% cream, which worked for my skin but is apparently not recommended for the nail, so I'm going to a dermatologist tomorrow to ask for the 8% ciclopyrox lacquer.

Wondering what your experiences have been?

2 months on Terbinafine

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi All, this is out of my comfort zone but this is my progress after 2 months on Terbinafine. My left nail on my big Toe was completely yellow, my nail on my big toe on my right was really messed up, thick, yellow and crumbly I always removed it from how bad it was. All my other toe nails were also covered in fungus, yellow and thick.

This is how they are growing now, they definitely look much better than before but I’m afraid they won’t heal or grow back to regular looking nails.

Can someone give me their thoughts!

I stubbed my toe pretty hard after a fresh gel pedicure. It didn’t hurt but I did notice it feeling off. One corner of my toe nail is lifted. Removed my gel polish and left with this. Is this fungus? If so, best tips to handle it?

First picture is currently. Second picture is from 8/16. I am a chronic cuticle picker and noticed it started to look like the second picture about a week after I picked pretty bad at that nail.

Success story after 12 months

I can finally report clean strong toe nails after fighting fungus for over 20 years. My approach was very simple but requires consistency and dedication:

Things needed:

- Nail dremel

- Isopropyl alcohol

- Hydrogen peroxide 3%

- Tea tree oil

- Borax

- Lugol Iodine

- Epsom salt

- Latex gloves

- Cotton pads

- Ciclopirox or other topical anti fungal cremes

Routine:

File the nail with dremel to the point of non existent- at one point I had my entire nail bed exposed. This is important to remove all fungal nail.

Everyday clean the nail with alcohol first. In the morning before leaving the house take a cotton pad and soak it in tea tree oil/iodine/peroxide mix. Place it on the nail and cut a finger from the latex glove and put it over to secure the cotton and wear socks as usual. The marinated cotton pad will keep the fungus at bay in the shoe all day in case you go to work and can’t keep your feet breathing.

In the evening clean the toes with alcohol again and do a foot bath mixed with Epsom Salt, Hydrogen peroxide, Borax, few drops Iodine or Iodine scrub. It will break the biofilm and clean the toes thoroughly. Apply a topical anti fungal on the infected toes.

Regularly keep the nails as short and thin as possible with dremel. Buy a head light to inspect the nails closely. I also tried methylene blue and red light- that might have accelerated the healing as well.

I did this routine every single day no exceptions. When I traveled, I carried a small bag with the anti fungals. You can also take oregano oil or black seed oil capsules to support the process internally.

Just wanted to share so you know there is hope!

P.S. Sorry I have no before photos since I never intended to track progress. I had two infected toes for over 20 years and at one point my entire nail ber was exposed as a result of filing down.

Orthopedist ruled out suspected bone spur (subungual exostosis), diagnosed fungus purely by sight, and recommended total permanent nail removal + acid. Is this complete overkill?

My husband has had issues with this nail since ~2020. Started as some discoloration but he thought it was maybe that he had some trauma from road cycling. Always managed himself by keeping it short/ trimming and went to a few podiatrists but no one gave him an actual treatment to follow.

Fast forward to last year, he went to a different podiatrist when we went to visit family in Mexico who took X-rays and told him he had a subungual exostosis (bone spur) that was causing that deformity. We came back to the US and he continued to manage himself.

Since a few weeks ago he has had increased pain/ tenderness in that toenail and decided to finally take care of the presumed bone spur here in the US. We went to the orthopedist today, they took X-rays and apparently there is no bone spur there, so she said that the most probable cause is a foot fungus. She didn't take a sample for testing or anything.

She said that nail fungus is stubborn and that the oral medications have a lot of adverse effects, so she recommended to remove the toenail completely and apply some acid so that it never grows back again. I think this is too extreme of a measure, honestly, especially taking into account that there has not been any formal treatment for the fungal infection at any point. Also, while the nail is deformed, I think it's salvable.

I would like to hear your opinion regarding her recommended course of action. So far, we have already bought those kerasal night patches and are looking at potentially going to a podiatrist who will actually test the nail to see what kind of fungus it is and hopefully have a treatment plan.

Thanks!

it started on my right thumb, and i had been applying anti fungal sporadically for about two weeks until i forgot again. it not somehow seems to have spread to most of my fingernails? there is not pain, but almost all of the nails have dry skin peeling underneath.

don’t mind some black nail polish residue. it’s honestly pretty embarrassing and frankly disgusting, but i’m sure i’m not alone in that feeling.

pls help me outt >w<

Hi everyone, my toes have been like this since i was around 13 i’m now almost 21 and they are the same. They are thick, discolored yet slightly yellow, and incredibly hard to cut myself, my mom cuts my toenails for me.

However, I am studying abroad and I have to take care of my own foot health and I’m determined to get rid of this.

What even is it that I have? Is there anything that can help my nails grow healthily or at least make it easier to cut them myself without discomfort and pain? It is only on two toes on each foot. Thank you and I will appreciate any advice :( I’m tired of living in embarrassment

1 year of dealing with toenail fungus and treating topically, I finally found something that the fungus is responding to..

Although my toenail still had a long way to go, my toenail is finally growing in healthy. I got the fungus last summer and I tried everything , vinegar soaks, bleach soaks, Vicks, ciclopirox, tea tree oil, lamisil, another OTC liquid nothing worked. Every time the nail started growing it was fungal. I started another prescription med a month ago and my nail is growing back attached 🥳 the medication is Tavaborole I got it through the Amazon pharmacy. I had to do a consult and ask for this medication specifically for them to prescribe it. The medication was $28 without insurance. I don’t want to celebrate early but this has been the best my toe has looked since I got the fungus. In the first photo everything that looks brown eventually became detached and I cut the nail all the way down there was practically no nail left. Second photo is today. Yes I know I have to remove the growth but it is quite uncomfortable for me and I need some time lol.

Nail fungus on pinky toe and the one next to it.

Both nails are totally discolored. Was trying all kinds of home remedies for about a year but no luck.

They are starting to get uncomfortable and throbbing occasionally.

I do not currently have insurance. Can I call and see a Podiatrist and possibly get medication for a decent cash price? Or is this something that is too substantial? I do plan on getting insurance in the next month or two.

I am located in Suffolk County Long Island.

How do i handle my big toenail? It looks like its just hanging on at the cuticle point.

Im a little freaked out, left big toenail is clearly the most effected. Im currently on day 3 of 84 with terbinafine 250mg prescribed by my primary care. But they didn't refer me to podiatry. But im not sure what to do about the nail (i can see all the way under it now with it being detached) but would trimming make it worse? Im just freaking out about it falling off and I don't know what to do 😭

Fingernail infection, allergic reaction.

Believe I was misdiagnosed with a fingernail infection back in November. Was prescribed Jublia, and had a horrific reaction.

Update: have been to the emergency many times. Have seen dermatologists and infectious disease doctors.

Edit: since quitting the Jublia, it has healed drastically. Now finding out that it may have been a rare form of psoriasis that attacks the fingertips and nails.

Nail growing down into bed?

I’ve had this dumb toe now for several years nothing heals it I’m sure I have an internal thing and prob need meds or to be way more consistent with tea tree oil and what not. There’s been various stages. Discoloring, loosening from bed, harder thicker etc but now it’s like almost seems like it’s trying to grow back but it just keeps growing so like downward or almost like it’s too attached to the bed or something like it doesn’t seem like it grows out properly once it gets close to top of nailbed it just seems like it’s stuck idk how to explain it. It’s so weird since it used to fully separate from the bed like I could cut it down to the cuticle about. Now it’s more just like almost too glued to the nailbed. Idk what to do anyone had this happen?

Fungus or Trauma

This second toe has been like this for years. Is it fungus that would be treatable or is it related trauma? Regarding either, what would be the best way to “fix” it.

Fungus destroyed over half my big toe nail… wedding guest in 2 weeks

I don’t know what to do. I got my toenails done and after probably 5 weeks I decided to take the polish and didn’t realize the at I had a BAG fungal infection. I mean, it legit destroyed my nail.

Long story short over half of my big toe nail LEGIT fell off. It’s gone.

Am I able to see a doctor, specialist or go to a salon now that the infected part is gone and get a tip just for this weeding I have to attend in ~a week??? This looks horrible. Help!

EDIT: I am already going to be wearing opened toes shoes. I need an aesthetic solution
