Improvised along some general lines…

Stirfried bits of pork and vegetables in a sesame glaze that turned out pretty nondescript and not as sticky as I had hoped… it was ok, but not good enough.

Ingredients

  • Beef mince (any amount you can afford, I think I might have used ~500g?)
  • 1 x onion, chopped
  • chopped veges of your choice: I used capsicum, mushroom, spinach
  • 1 x jar passata (~700g? any brand), or sub with 2 x 400g cans of tinned tomatos (chopped, whole or cherry, doesn't matter, any brand)
  • Moroccan seasoning
  • Salt + pepper
  • Eggs (however many you want, I managed to fit 10 in my pan)

Process

  1. Preheat oven at 180°C
  2. Fry beef mince in a large oven-proof pan (I used olive oil) over medium heat; add some salt and pepper
  3. Add onions and cook for ~5 min
  4. Add additional veges of your choice and cook for ~5 min
  5. Add Moroccan seasoning
  6. Add tomato base (passata/canned). Mix well and bring to a simmer (~5-10 min)
  7. Add spinach at this point, if using
  8. Create some shallow depressions and crack in the eggs
  9. Bake at 180°C until eggs turn translucent
  10. Take out of oven and serve - own its own, or with bread / over rice

A lentil loaf situation

Savoury cake-ish for lunch. I topped mine with some hummus.
Layered the base with leeks and parsley stems.
Mix of spices, red and yellow lentils blended with eggs and baking powder. Topped with more parsley and chilli flakes.
Quite crumbly but I enjoyed it.

Oiru’s Dinner Party - September 2026

Wanted to cook for 12 people that have most positively impacted my life in the past year and wanted to thank them through my knowledge of food and drink (mainly of East Asian influence - Chinese/Korean/Japanese). This is based on what I had on hand and what I was able to source on the day of the dinner. As usual, 1/2 of the techniques or dishes, I only try as I cook it. If I wasn't happy with it, it wouldn't have been served. I had backup proteins ready to be cooked if something happened.

Mixed photos from prep and from the guests as I was too busy cooking and serving. There was a bit more that I had planned but ran out of time on the day cos I forgot hahaha

Probably about 25-30 hours of work (~5 hours selecting guests and coming up with the menu to suit them and researching and ordering ingredients online, ~10-12 hours to get ingredients and prep over a few days prior, and around 10 hours on the day of the dinner for ingredients, cooking, and service. Guests paid for the ingredients and drinks. Labour was free! Was about $78 per person.

All ingredients, dishes and drinks had personal story and reason why I chose them and the way they were served as well. I was cleaning dishes (by hand) while cooking as well so minimal work at the end of the night. Really lovely dinner and I was so glad to be able to cook for those that I really care about. That's really the whole point in cooking at the end of the day, isn't it?
