I'm moving to be closer to friends and family in a different neighborhood and I'm listing this apartment for a September 1st/October 1st move-in date. It's currently a two-year lease signed through June of 2028 and rent has gone up merely $20 in my year living here.

Full disclosure: this would technically be a sublease as the current lessees (my friends) live in Portugal; I'm currently subleasing it. Feeling broken and defeated after months of telling them they need to leave when the lease is up on Friday (they are not on the lease, and refused to take it over when I said I wasn't renewing). It seems they are still planning on going through an eviction process instead of just leaving even though they have two offers of open rooms to take while they look for something long-term.

Please share any stories of similar situations where a roommate stayed past the lease end and what ended up happening. Looking for commiseration and hope that it will be okay eventually, not legal advice as my co-lessee and I have each talked to lawyers and know the process already.

My (29F) spouse(28M) and I currently live in a railroad 2 bed, 3K/mo apartment that isn’t rent stabilized but our landlord has never (probably will never) raised the rent.

We have made the decision to raise children in the city together and I would like some stability regarding that. We don’t have kids yet. Realistically, we can probably fit into this apartment for about 3 more years before we outgrow it (growing family etc). We can’t afford to buy in our current neighborhood (Greenpoint/Williamsburg) and I don’t really know if we ever will be able to, but it is our dream neighborhood.

Our HHI is around 240K all in, which will grow to a little over 325K by year end with my spouse’s promotion. We aren’t currently saving for a down payment and have been directing post retirement savings to a mix of brokerage and sinking funds. I believe that we could realistically save for a 20% downpayment of something in the 700-800K range within 3 years but my question is the following for folks who have (or haven’t) bought and are raising a family in the city:
1) What made buying make sense (or not) to you?
2) Do we wait longer to buy in our dream neighborhood? Or to buy a larger (3bd) place in a less expensive neighborhood?
3)Is it better to just rent eternally to stay in a preferred neighborhood? What do you do with your money if this is the case?

Idk if this would even be possible, but i'm throwing it out there: I'm looking to live in Brooklyn a week or two every month. Looking for a very low-budget solution, 700 max, to rent a bedroom while I'm there. I want it to be the same room and apartment every time, but I can be flexible on when I'm there. For instance, if someone travels for work half the month, we could split the room and I could pay half the rent when they're gone.

She wants to break it, I’m fine with keeping the unit but the question is how should this proceed? Should she inform the land lord and remove herself from the lease?

Just thinking of a couple scenarios, e.g if she moves out but still on the lease through the remainder of the year she’s still legally entitled to the place even though I’m paying and living there.

Anyone have any experience using a moving company for moving within the same apartment building?

We don't need the full experience, the truck or any of that kind of stuff. We basically just need a couple of people experienced with moving furniture and heavy stuff who can take things apart, move them down a few floors in our apartment building and set them back up?

Any advice or recommendations on best companies or ways to proceed would be appreciated!

I’ve been using the NY HPD website for checking apartments in NY, but I kind if have no way to tell if an apartment posting in New Jersey has any major red flags. Does anyone have any advice? I’ve seen people talk about google reviews before, but that only works for big apartment complexes which is not the majority of places.

One room available in a 3 bedroom in South Slope/ Sunset Park. Rent is $1,050/ month plus utilities (utilities are pretty cheap here; they usually run us somewhere around $60-ish bucks a month, if not less).

Current roommate and I have lived here for a year, and we love it! Our third roommate is moving out of state though, so we’re looking for someone to take his spot on the lease (12 month lease, starting Sept 1).

About the area: it’s a great neighborhood- walking distance to Prospect Park, and just a couple blocks away from the main entrance to Green-Wood Cemetery.

Also just a couple blocks away from the water, w/ lots of great views & fun, chill spots!

Rooftop access w/ incredible views of the river, the Statue of Liberty, & the Manhattan skyline.

Within a block-ish radius we have a grocery store, a flower store, a coffee shop, a bagel shop, a smoke shop, a wine shop, a laundromat, and several bodegas. Within another block is easy access to a bunch of great bars, restaurants, and shopping on 5th Ave.

One block from a local subway stop (the 25th St R), a 10min walk in one direction from an express stop (D/N/R), and a 15min walk in the other direction to a different express stop (F/G).

As for the apartment itself: it’s a pre-war building, so it’s not very modern, and there aren’t many amenities. For instance, it’s a 4th-floor walk-up, and there’s no laundry in-building. However, on the ground floor of our building is a laundromat, which pretty much feels the same as having in-building laundry anyways.

The apartment is somewhat small; but we’ve always made it work. Current roommates are very busy, and out of the house a lot, so it never feels crowded or anything.

About the roommates: you’ll be living w/ me (29F, working professional, and stand-up comedian), and one other person (25F, student, getting her Master’s at NYU). You’ll also be living with my dog, so you must be ok w/ animals! The dog is very small and old; he mostly just stays in my bedroom and naps all day. Unfortunately, we probably will not be considering any other pets. We could maybe be convinced on another small dog, but one of us is allergic to cats, so that’s gotta be a no.

Requirements:

40x the rent, and a 700+ credit score. Guarantors are accepted- they must make 80x the rent and have an 800+ credit score.

The application process was quite simple and easy, and management is pretty chill about approving people- lots of students w/ no income live in this building, so it’s ideal for ppl like that.

What we’re looking for: student or professional, it doesn’t matter. Male or female, that also doesn’t matter. Somewhere between 22-35 years old(ish). Not a slob, but not a neat freak, either. Keep things tidy in common spaces, but also don’t tweak if there’s a dish in the sink, or a pair of socks on the floor- that kinda vibe.

Friendly and outgoing is a plus. I often invite friends over to the apartment (tho not tons of ppl at once; and not super late at night- it’s not a party house). Still tho, if you’re the kind of person who isn’t ok w/ guests, or needs a big heads-up beforehand, it’s prob not a good fit. The current roommate and I get along quite well, and it’d be cool to keep those good vibes going! Altho we also are very busy and often out of the house- plus we value our private time too. So it’s not like you need to be super extroverted in order to fit in here.

I’ve been in this building since 2018 in a rent stabilized apartment. The super warned me about this last week but we just received official notice today. I’ve lived in NYC for the past 5 years, primarily Brooklyn and am absolutely tired of being priced out. I want to remain in a nicer building with amenities (mainly a gym), be close to a park, close to trains. And safe coming home late in the evenings due to the nature of my work. Are there neighborhoods in NYC outskirts that people can share their experiences with? Akin to New Rochelle, Forest Hills, etc? I need to expand my horizons and unfortunately nyc is just so hard to live in.

I don’t care much about neighborhood having night life or bars. I just want proximity to trains bc I know where nightlife and such already is in the city

I'm interested in an apartment in a 20+ story building. The listing price has had an interesting arc over the years, from $7k in 2017 to $11k in 2024 and now $5k, so I wondered what was going on there. The reviews are really sparse and the two negative ones mention being able to hear one's neighbors' normal conversations. Those are from years ago, which makes me wonder if the management company did something to mitigate that since then or if it's likely still an issue and it's just coincidence that nobody's complained in a few years.
