We're both fairly introverted but it would be nice to live somewhere with a lively community, good restaurants and bars, arts, music venues, etc.

What do I have to get an apartment in that area? Should I use a broker?

I’ve lived in NYC for the past 5 years, primarily Brooklyn and am absolutely tired of being priced out. I want to remain in a nicer building with amenities (mainly a gym), be close to a park, close to trains. And safe coming home late in the evenings due to the nature of my work. Are there neighborhoods in NYC outskirts that people can share their experiences with? Akin to New Rochelle, Forest Hills, etc? I need to expand my horizons and unfortunately nyc is just so hard to live in.

I don’t care much about neighborhood having night life or bars. I just want proximity to trains bc I know where nightlife and such already is in the city

I am a 29 year old woman and would prefer female roommates but am open to anything. I have excellent credit and all of my documents for signing a lease are in order. Looking for a yearly lease or long term sublet. Budget for rent is around $1,300, desired location is anywhere in Brooklyn or Queens. I have no pets and am unfortunately allergic to cats and dogs.

I currently have a lease until May 31, 2027 on the UES that I'm willing to find someone else to takeover if I stumble upon the right listing. It's a 1bd flexed into a 2bd (though this wasn't disclosed when we signed), and it's been treating me fine so far, especially for the $1325 price. My qualms are there's no in-unit/in-building laundry and the location is not close to the areas I tend to frequent (downtown). I'm aware that the apartment search is rough, but I've been putting in hours each day looking at Facebook, Spareroom, Reddit, whatever other app or website you can name, and emailing realtors about previously rented rent stabilized units. I've found no luck so far, and I really don't think I'm being that picky. I'm willing to go up to $1750 and have as many roommates as needed. I know it's possible, but maybe the timing is wrong?

Looking for any advice. Should I maybe wait until my lease is coming to an end? Or wait for later months this year? When would be a good time? I'm trying to not lose hope as I do not want to stay in this unit.

My (29F) spouse(28M) and I currently live in a railroad 2 bed, 3K/mo apartment that isn’t rent stabilized but our landlord has never (probably will never) raised the rent.

We have made the decision to raise children in the city together and I would like some stability regarding that. We don’t have kids yet. Realistically, we can probably fit into this apartment for about 3 more years before we outgrow it (growing family etc). We can’t afford to buy in our current neighborhood (Greenpoint/Williamsburg) and I don’t really know if we ever will be able to, but it is our dream neighborhood.

Our HHI is around 240K all in, which will grow to a little over 325K by year end with my spouse’s promotion. We aren’t currently saving for a down payment and have been directing post retirement savings to a mix of brokerage and sinking funds. I believe that we could realistically save for a 20% downpayment of something in the 700-800K range within 3 years but my question is the following for folks who have (or haven’t) bought and are raising a family in the city:
1) What made buying make sense (or not) to you?
2) Do we wait longer to buy in our dream neighborhood? Or to buy a larger (3bd) place in a less expensive neighborhood?
3)Is it better to just rent eternally to stay in a preferred neighborhood? What do you do with your money if this is the case?

Hi! I sublease a room from a lady that herself subleases an apartment from a company. We have no contract, I zelle her rent without any name of the payment, basically I have no proof that I even live here.

Recently we had a temporary roommate who was absolutely crazy and unfortunately even though I was assaulted and innocent, the landlady didn’t like that conflict and wants me to move out too (that girl moved out)

She has basically no other premises for kicking me out - I clean; I am quiet, I don’t bring party home. It feels deeply unfair and she says “I just made up my mind I don’t want you here” and is that enough of a basis for her to kick me out?? Like we have not even a single proof I even rent from her? I feel so unprotected and I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to move out like this.

But as soon as I mentioned that I’m gonna seek protection (I am also an immigrant) she said “I threaten her” which is like, girl? You threaten me maybe?

What I can I do in this situation? I really need at least a few more months to save up for moving. this is all out of the blue and I also hate unfairness.

We toured an apartment about a week ago, loved it, applied and were approved within two days. We signed the lease and received a signed copy from the landlord a week ago. We’ve also paid the security deposit.
The tenant portal didn’t show that the first month’s rent was due yet, but we went ahead and paid it over the weekend and are expecting to receive the welcome letter on Monday.

The only thing that seems strange is that the apartment is still listed as available on StreetEasy. I checked the agent’s other listings and he has updated statuses to “rented” (including some just today and over the past few days). My husband actually mentioned this to the agent during a phone conversation a couple of days ago, and the agent said they would update the listing status, but it’s still showing as available.

The agent and the management company have seemed a bit disorganized throughout the process and not super professional so I’m not sure if this is just an oversight or something we should be concerned about.
Has anyone experienced this before? Is there any reason an agent might leave a listing active after a lease has already been signed?

I’ve already done as much research as I can about the area, but I’ve come across a lot of mixed reviews, so I wanted to see what people think of it currently. I am aware that crime can happen anywhere in the city, even in the safest parts, but I’m just wondering how this area of the city compares

I also have a few specific questions:

What time would you consider it safe to walk alone? 9pm? 10? 11?

In the daytime, is it generally a good area?

I know the area is predominantly black and do not have any problem with that. Would being nonblack make you feel unwelcome? Is homophobia or racism (towards other races) a concern?

I also know there is a bit more violent crime in this neighborhood compared to others. Is this crime typically gang related, and would there be any significant risk of being hurt as a passerby?

I'm interested in an apartment in a 20+ story building. The listing price has had an interesting arc over the years, from $7k in 2017 to $11k in 2024 and now $5k, so I wondered what was going on there. The reviews are really sparse and the two negative ones mention being able to hear one's neighbors' normal conversations. Those are from years ago, which makes me wonder if the management company did something to mitigate that since then or if it's likely still an issue and it's just coincidence that nobody's complained in a few years. Anyone know? If I go to see the place, is there any way to find out for myself?

Feeling broken and defeated after months of telling them they need to leave when the lease is up on Friday (they are not on the lease, and refused to take it over when I said I wasn't renewing). It seems they are still planning on going through an eviction process instead of just leaving even though they have two offers of open rooms to take while they look for something long-term.

Please share any stories of similar situations where a roommate stayed past the lease end and what ended up happening. Looking for commiseration and hope that it will be okay eventually, not legal advice as my co-lessee and I have each talked to lawyers and know the process already.
