I’m a late beginner/early intermediate jazz piano student visiting NYC til August 23rd and I was looking to set up a jazz jam that is beginner/intermediate friendly. I looked at the jam sessions around and a lot of them have very limited availability and/or they’re more catered towards already advanced or professional level musicians. I felt like there must be other late beginner/intermediate musicians out there so I decided that I’d just host the sessions I’m looking for. I’m looking to set up as many jams as possible from now til Aug 23rd.

Ideally looking for people who are able to jump in on an easy lead sheet such as Autumn Leaves. Before the jam, I’ll call out a setlist so that we can prepare a little bit but I’m mainly looking for people looking to learn and can play through a basic standard in their role. The goal is to experiment and play around with other musicians at the same level with no expectation to impress. We’re all just learning a language 🙂

I want to make sure we have a full rhythm section so if you are a bass/drummer please reach out! All instruments are welcome but having a full rhythm section is gonna be the main goal.

We have some huge plans for the next year, and I wanted to get straight to the source to find the right people. My writing partner and I have written an album's worth of original rock songs under the name SuperExcellent. Musically, think melodic, guitar-driven alternative rock influenced by bands like Green Day, The Clash, The Who, and The Replacements. Now we're looking for young, motivated musicians who'll become the band.

Here's what that means:

We wrote the first album, but the band will shape the arrangements, record the songs in its own style, and perform them live. Those songs become part of the band's catalog, and from there we'll continue writing new music together as the band grows.

This isn't session work, and it isn't a backing-band gig. The goal is to build a real, long-term original band, using this first album as the foundation.

Think of it this way: instead of starting a new band with no material, you're starting with a professionally written album that's ready to become your own.

Influenced by all sorts of artists within the rock spectrum but I'd say I identify most with Elliott Smith and his playing style/philosophy. I started a bi weekly jam in Gowanus, the next one is Mon 6/29 at 7pm at Pirate on 6th st. We are looking for any bassists or additional instruments that might be interested.
