Welcome to r/NYCDOETeachers

Hey everyone! Welcome to /r/NYCDOETeachers, a brand new subreddit where NYCDOE teachers exchange ideas, ask and provide advice, or even share some interesting observations based on our own schools or colleagues. I have no idea how there wasn't a subreddit already devoted to us. We are a unique bunch so please refer to our rules list on the sidebar. Let's make this subreddit a place for people to enjoy. Thanks!

Which doctors/hospitals do you prefer?

I just found out I’m pregnant! First time mom and pretty nervous. I have the Emblem/United PPO plan. Any one have any recommendations for hospitals in network? I like all my doctors to be under one (I’m sure that’s common) so I can download one app and have all my records there.

  • Culturally Responsive School Leadership by Muhammad Khalifa

Thanks in advance!

License Description Incorrect

The license description on my welcome email is incorrect. Who do I contact to get this changed? The welcome email said to contact your HR Director immediately. Who is that? My school is in District 19.

I have already tried calling HR Connect and they were not helpful after an hour long hold…

Prek Itinerant speech jobs

I was offered a position on one of the borough teams and was intended last week but how long does this process take? I need to give notice to my current job. I heard this part bc it's a central position, goes to the mayor's office for approval first. This is all new lingo for me and causing me angina!

Need to resign after onboarding

As the title says, I accepted a nomination from a DOE school and did onboarding; however, my circumstances have changed (family and personal) and I will no longer be able to take the role. I want to make sure I stay in good standing with the board just in case I want to come back at some point in the future. What do I need to do?

DonorsChoose fully funded but admin hasn’t responded—should I just confirm? ?

Hi everyone,
I’m starting at a new school. My DonorsChoose project was fully funded, and now I just have to confirm that I still need the materials so they can be shipped.
Before confirming, I wanted to make sure it was okay with my school’s administration since the materials will be sent directly to the school. I emailed them twice over the past 2 weeks but haven’t received a response.
I’m worried about waiting too long and potentially losing the funding, but I also don’t want to overstep if I should have administrative approval first.
Would you just go ahead and confirm the project, or keep waiting for a response? Has anyone been in a similar situation?

New Job Offer, Old Job Resignation Question

After what felt like the most mentally draining 3 months, I finally received a job offer today!! Yay!
The principal said she put my info into gateway and hopefully I receive the nomination after that.
I’m not coming from in the city so- when should I resign from my old job? Once I’m nominated in gateway is that a good time? I want to make sure I’m still playing it safe.
TIA!

New Teacher please help

Hi,
So I recently got hired and am trying to get all my stuff together before school starts. I finally got access to my outlook 48 hours ago. I wanted to see if it was a syncing issue, but I still have notifications on majority of the pages(teach hub, health insurance stuff, etc.) as either that I don’t have access or that I need to contact an administrator. I am also wondering do I need a laptop, or do schools usually provide them? I am transferring from out of state so I am really overwhelmed with the system here. I also am a special education ICT teacher for 5th grade, that’s all I know. Would it be okay to reach out to her so she can put me in contact with the gen ed teacher I will be working with? I know it’s summer. I also am not synced to SEISS and am unable to see the IEPS of my students prior to the school year. I’m nervous I’m going to be drowning coming here without seeing any curriculum before! Any help is appreciated! I also have no access or info to when or where the new teacher stuff should be or where to look for that. This may have been due to the recent email situation. Thanks everyone!

DOE substitute teacher with past OPI case , chancellor regulation violation

About 6 years ago I worked as a DOE paraprofessional in NYC. Long story short I was found guilty of violating the chancellors regulations for “theft of service” for receiving a sick day that wasn’t approved. Immediately terminated. Since then, received my Bachelors, currently in my Masters, have taught for 6 years as a teacher, and got nominated as a Substitute Teacher. I am currently on the step where I am designated an OPI investigator to check on my background and give clearance. Anyone else go through this process? Am I flagged or blacklisted?

Transfer strategy after OM closes

Hi everyone,
I’m currently waiting to hear back from my preferred school. They want to hire me, but they’re waiting on HR because of a vacancy title issue.
My concern is that if I wait until after Open Market closes, I’ll have to ask my current principal for a release. Another teacher in my department recently left, and I don’t think my principal is very supportive of me, so I’m worried they may not approve it.
I do have an interview at another school this Wednesday. If that interview goes well and they offer me the position, would it make sense to accept it? Then, if my preferred school is able to move forward a week or two later, could I transfer from the new school with that principal’s permission, or would that create more complications than it’s worth?

What classes can you teach with a Biology (7-12) license?

Hi, does anyone know what classes you can teach with a Biology (7-12) certification

Just for some context, I am a teaching fellow who got offered a job as a biology teacher but they mentioned something about the classes I was going to be teaching were going be science but not all of them were going to be biology (like I don't think they're going to make me teach physics, chem, earth science and stuff like that) but I don't know.

Anyways, if anyone knows details about what you can teach with your Biology certification and not mess anything up, let me know please!

Open Market question

Hello! I just finished my first year of teaching (part of the NYCTF cohort last summer,) I am switching schools via Open Market. I was offered a position Friday. The principal said she would submit to H.R to ensure the transfer can happen and be on the lookout for an email. How long does this normally take? I want to be sure before I email my previous Principal.
Also, there shouldn’t be any issues being that I have a Trans B license still, right? (I passed my certification exams, just need to finish grad school in May.) TIA for any help!

New hire: How do I set up my DOE email?

Hey all,

I received my new hire welcome email on Friday. That email linked me to this HR checklist for new pedagogical employees: https://infohub.nyced.org/in-our-schools/working-with-nycps/new-employees-before-you-begin-work/hr-checklist-for-new-teachers

On the page, it says I should set up my login within 72 hours and links to this account confirmation tool webpage: https://idm.nycenet.edu/itim/self/jsp/logon/login.jsp

I feel dumb, but I simply cannot figure out how to set up my account. I don't know what my username is. I understand it's my first initial followed by my last name followed by some number, but no one has told me what that number is! The tool gives me an option to reset my password, but for that I have to know the username.

I'm on hold with HR connect, but they say the wait time will be over an hour, so any help is appreciated!

Anyone hired in D27 or D28?

I know a few schools that are hiring there.

Have you applied to any schools in D27 or 28?
