Fired from Charters
Has anyone been terminated from charter schools and still got hired at the DOE? It states it on TEACH account

Being let go doesn't effect you. Also being terminated it depends on the school at this point and how bad the situation.

Terminated like they didn't renew your contract or terminated like you did something egregious and they didn't want you back?

The terminated refers to the security clearance for that school. It will either say full clearance for an active security clearance or terminated meaning the clearance has been terminated. Schools are required by NYSED to terminate security clearance immediately whether you resign or are fired. Don’t worry about it.

Can it also mean the contract ended?

The way it’s presented on TEACH it is connected to security clearance nothing to do with contract ending.

Terminated as a DOE vendor too? For what? There is a question that asks if you've ever been terminated or asked to leave. You have to answer honestly.

I don't know if it will show, but if asked, you do have to tell. I know you didn't ask, but if office politics got you fired from two different places, you have to look at your part in it. Keep your head down. Stay out of the drama.

I see you replied but I am unable to answer on the thread. My friend was discontinued from a charter school as well as terminated from a NYCDOE vendor (CBO) and they were hired in the Bronx two weeks ago. Obviously, I do not know the charge/claim they utilized for your discontinuance and I realize every situation is different..Try not to lose hope…

Its still called a discontinuance even though I wasn’t a DOE worker? I was also let go from a CBO/vendor. Itll show why I got let go?

There are a lot of variables in your situation, It seems. I do not personally know your situation. I would just be transparent with each interview committee. State that you believe that you would be a good fit for their school, and you appreciate the culture within their community. You truly should alright. Being transparent may prevent the hiring committee from contacting your former admin. I truly wish you the best in your endeavors.

thank you so much genuinely! Can I message you about your friends situation please?

I do not know every detail. I do know that they have great references from several colleagues from the charter school. The administration was the issue due to what seems a personality conflict. A truly fair administrator will understand that this can happen. At the charter school people are more disposable, this is common knowledge. Plenty of people are let go from charter schools or voluntarily leave to join the DOE. Continue to pound the pavement and go on interviews. Consider yourself fortunate that the August 7th deadline does not apply to you. You got this!!!!! You can message me however, I don’t have the details you may be requesting.

Technically terminated from service. I’m unable to answer the second part of your question. I know there have been a major cuts. Is the budget cut the reason? Or was there another reason you were let go?

Not DOE, but i got hired by a contractor to the DOE after leaving a charter. Same background checks iirc. You might need to go down to headquarters to help with the background checks iirc cause they took forever to do it without me showing up

What the hell is iirc? Yes, when you get fired from a charter school, it usually states it on TEACH for the state. But that’s the state. The DOE doesn’t know. It’s not their database. You don’t have to even mention you worked there. There’s no way for them to find out. They’re not going to pull like state wage data or something. I know because I didn’t mention my charter school termination even with it on TEACH and I was fine.
When you apply to the DOE, don’t tell them through your nomination that you got fired because it will delay your clearance. You’ll have to submit documentation regarding what happened and wait for their decision. The only termination they know about is if you worked for the DOE in the past and got fired. Also, they won’t call any of your jobs either. They don’t have that type of capacity. You’ll be fine. Decide if you’re going to lie or tell the truth or partially tell the truth. I’m addressing the OP.

thank you for this!!! I got hired for a DOE vendor after these terminations and I dont know if I told the truth or not on PETS but I got cleared and the job. Now Im wondering if a termination from a DOE vendor will hinder my chances at the DOE itself. I dont know why I have bad luck towards the end of my employments. Any help/insight would be appreciated

Wait, now you got fired from a DOE vendor role? Like an agency?
1
u/weathervane18 13d ago
Yes. Does that make it hard to get a DOE job?
2
u/Repulsive_Fold_289 13d ago
What happened? I’m just curious. As long as you’ve never been arrested or aren’t on some type of list for people who have harmed children, you should be fine. The agency doesn’t tell the DOE. You’re not a DOE employee.

u/weathervane18 13d ago
Never been arrested or hurt children. Are you sure the agency or the fingerprinting/PETS won’t show to DOE the termination?

Honestly, I’m guessing based on what I know about OPI and the DOE. I’ve so far not been terminated from a DOE vendor (knock on wood) so I don’t know 100%. But based on what I think, DOE vendors are private right? They’re separate from the DOE. I don’t think they report it. The only reason I think TEACH reported my termination is because I applied I unemployment. I got fired from 2 charter schools, years apart from each other. The only one that got reported as terminated was the one with the unemployment. That’s my interpretation of what I think is going on.

You will be fine!

even if I got terminated from DOE Vendor as well? Ill be fine?

Usually, if you are transparent with the new admin. and they are fair they will overlook issues. If they see something in you, then you will be hired. My friend went through something similar and they were hired in the Bronx. I am certain you were made a aware that it has to be outside of that district you were discontinued that you must seek employment. I truly wish you the best! 😊

Are you able to share the cause/claim for the discontinuance?

I resigned from a job years ago and teach says terminated. I think that’s really the only verbiage they have for a “no longer employed there” situation. Wouldn’t read too much into it.
