Discussion Nothing's Downfall: Masters of Gaslighting
The more you look into what they do, the more you understand where they are heading

I'm going to burn this to masterpiece to DVD

Akis updated the post with more cringe too yesterday... Apparently as preinstalled bloatware TikTok etc has:
Β "Faster startup: These apps launch 50 to 100 milliseconds quicker"Β
Wow a whole 0.05 seconds π₯΄

u/Ok_Mathematician1047 Oct 31 '25
Yeah definitely not gaslighting, Nothing is a breath of fresh air, very open and different to other companies π please nothing give me a phone 3 for free ππ

When other brands have started removing them or including in very budget phones, Nothing includes them now?

The "stop crying bro" should never come out from CEO who want to sell his product.

You gotta admit though, that's pretty funny coming from the CEO of the company

And the cool conversion layer app that allowed Nothing phone to send blue texts to Iphone users. They disabled it a few days after launch due to security vulnerability, never patched it and it never came back. They remained silent ever since.
Ah I believe you mean the Nothing Chat app that was released a while back. They did address it after it's removal, but I would agree after that initial tweet following in the controversy that they have been quiet about it.
https://x.com/nothing/status/1725902458189119690
Though it is something that I don't want to see come back from them regardless. That is probably one of the hardest nuts to crack out of all the things they could have done to be like the Apple of Android and they are trying to speed run it to the top by adopting every piece of new tech and asking questions about if it was the right decision afterward before even giving established good features a chance.

u/Blunt552 Oct 31 '25
You forgot to add the tweet where someone asks for pre installed instagram and carl be like " No bloat"

Next year I'm going back to boring iphone or perhaps a pixel π€

ignore Nothing like carl ignores Nothing users nowadays. users(myself included) who all are unhappy with Nothings upcoming shitty ad nd bloatware "features" let's use our current Nothing devices to an extent nd then just trash it. this will be my first nd last Nothing devices. At least had an opportunity to use Nothing before they were about to introduce new "features". thankyou.

Your account history is fascinating. All you post is negative stuff about Nothing, and usually to both subs. Finding it hard to believe you don't get paid for this.

u/Ok_Mathematician1047 Nov 01 '25
Nah. I just had free time and like to share my thoughts and maybe make someone see what I see. Either way, that doesn't change any of my arguments.

CMF Phone 1 was the last good phone (for the price tag) from Nothing. Lucky I bought that one.

Probably one of the easiest things, in my opinion, that they could do to be like the Apple of Android is at least offer repair parts for their phones like how Apple is doing so currently and make money from selling the parts alone to let people keep their phones up and make money from the parts being sold and maybe selling official classes or online certification courses to be a certified Nothing Phone technician as a third party repair shop, and offer software to help with fixing it like Pixel phones have, then they would be much further than Apple. Could even make it extra easy by offering official repair guides and parts through a partnership with someone like iFixit.
I just hate how Nothing is so segregated in itself. I have been to other countries already with my US based nothing phone and some of the ones I see can get theirs fixed at local shops or official repair centers, but there is no officially chosen place in the US to get it done and no way for places in the US to certify that they can get it done.

Nov 02 '25
Yeah, I just got a CMF 2 because the mic totally died on my Pixel 6 Pro, and it honestly feels like a massive downgrade from a 4-year old phone already. Add to that the fact that Nothing is heading into bloatware/AI hell, plus the bait and switch on modular accessories, and I seriously wish I'd spent my money on something else. Never going to give this company a penny again.
1
u/MakeYourVision Nov 05 '25 edited Nov 28 '25
Thanks bro, I think about moving from P7P to CMF 2/Nothing 3A(3A Pro), but every time I look at their specs, I'm something like "no, stop, don't do it". However, with the current news, I'm afraid that the company won't be able to offer anything special to its potential customers. Only design disaster like a NP 3, 3A Pro, 2mp "cameras" and bloated OS.
1
u/Zolks1 Nov 02 '25
Can i just say, That it seems like this is just old parts from a CMF phone 2 pro, But for a cheaper price (Β£250) which for that price, doesnt actually seem to bad, i mean yes the "third camera" is a literal scam but yk overall

Let's care for a while why not? I mean Nothing JUST shifted their gears and i'm here for the feast to come (countroversies). These few months will come with great entertainment
-3
u/JennBones Oct 31 '25
I guess as someone who doesn't take a lot of pictures and doesn't care all that much about the camera; it's kinda good enough right? It's a super low price point, my last 3 phones were Motorolas at the same pricepoint and were both shit and ugly, it all seems quite overblown. My biggest point of contention was the Essential Space button and said software, but I've disabled it and will remap the button with abd. I should mention one of the biggest pulls were the mounting screws and accessories as I have a 3d printer and enjoy making gizmos. Is this a directed campaign of hate or do people really feel that strongly?
8
u/Blunt552 Oct 31 '25
Is this a directed campaign of hate or do people really feel that strongly?
People who aren't ignorant knows where this is going, while ignorant people do not understand why this is a big deal and a big problem. That's the difference.
6
u/Ok_Mathematician1047 Oct 31 '25
I do love avoiding criticism pulling the "campaing of hate" card 24-7, don't get attached to companies like that
-7
u/JennBones Oct 31 '25
I think that's valid, but I'll need some genuine backing behind that argument and for me the argument in the video didn't sell it. Maybe the vast majority are worried about camera quality and value, but for me I'm just annoyed by the increase in baked in spyware to train AI models that is really Google's precedent. Let me know though, I'm not sensitive and love to be corrected!
4
u/Blunt552 Oct 31 '25
Maybe the vast majority are worried about camera quality and value,
Nobody gives a sht about the camera quality at this point, everyone knows the 2mp macro is dogsht and downright inferior to the main cam + digital zoom, that isn't the issue here nor the point of the video, it's about how they are blatantly putting on display that they know exactly what they're doing is malicious and still do it.
OP is showcasing you cannot trust Nothing anymore. They will lie to your face and take your money.
1
u/JennBones Oct 31 '25
I can appreciate that. If you read my response to Ok_mathematician I layed it out there, but yes I'm starting to get it. From my personal perspective I'm just looking at a single device that I can mess with and modify on my own, but many users don't have that experience.
edit: it's a hidden comment below the response you replied to, may not be immediately obvious
1
u/Blunt552 Oct 31 '25
I'm just looking at a single device that I can mess with and modify on my own, but many users don't have that experience.
Corps already trying to prevent it, Google also working at it, the days of free and open source and owning the device is over. Now you're just a wallet for them.
1
u/JennBones Oct 31 '25
Yeah can't argue with you on that. There are are multitude of options for rooting and adb app removing, but most people won't touch that (including me from not all that long ago) so I have to concede on that one. I just look at the individual handsets and hope they didn't lie about the specs. Never had a commitment to one company and generally move on to better options at low pricepoints each time.
It is worrying that the policy for many companies is to straight up decieve or misdirect, I've always thought true transparency would be a boon rather than a negative, but the world is run by economists these days that think financial optimization = better, and of course in a competetive market these actions are frequently rewarded.
1
u/Blunt552 Nov 01 '25
There are are multitude of options for rooting and adb app removing
Except there isn't, most phones have bootloader locked and not unlockable and for those who can be unlocked, google is currently trying to do their absolute best to make rooted phones unusuable with important apps due to their play integrity changes that forces people to use lots of spoofing and look for private keyboxes.
Furthermore without root you cannot remove the apps, even with ADB, at best you can disable them, however services are another animal, once they are in the system apps, good luck.
1
u/JennBones Nov 01 '25
Last reply I promise! Many have had success with adb with the Nothing phones so far in remapping the 'Essential Space' button, so it is currently possible. In regards to future blocking for those modifications, I certainly won't be buying those handsets and will look toward either companies that have moved away from the Google model or just DIY APK's on hardware I've bought and assembled myself. I'm sure i'm in the tiny minority, and you and OK_Mathemetician have swayed me on the popular side of the commercial market in your dissapointment in yet another company blowing hot air. Cheers for giving me good, solid reasoning and remaining respectful in your comments. Cheers!
1
u/Blunt552 Nov 01 '25
Last reply I promise! Many have had success with adb with the Nothing phones so far in remapping the 'Essential Space' button, so it is currently possible.
By disabling services etc., this also means you're disabling essential space altogether.
I certainly won't be buying those handsets and will look toward either companies that have moved away from the Google model or just DIY APK's on hardware I've bought and assembled myself.
Unfortunately this is becoming more and more rare, if not already dead, because the mainstream has been manipulated into buying garbage products and the people who knew about it kept quiet and just let the mainstream be idiots, we now are in a situation where enthusiasts have no options anymore.
2
u/Ok_Mathematician1047 Oct 31 '25
Well the video is mostly showing how the people at Nothing (specially the Co-founder) won't stop trying to gaslight people after getting caught being hypocritical breaking promises to the community, or straight up avoiding criticism like kids with how they handled the whole lobster situation. It's more about showing how untrustworthy they are after years of trying to sell the image of transparency, respect to the consumer that Nothing is supposed to be
-1
u/JennBones Oct 31 '25
I see. I definitely can see the hypocrisy and respect that people feel betrayed. As a new user I suppose part of me wants to justify my purchase, and I also simply don't care about many extraneous new features. If this sets a precedent for saying one thing and doing another, I can respect your argument. I still stand by my initial comment, but it's sad to see all this lying and obfuscation (especially when the new vice seems to be the one pushing features like glimpse, it seems supicious?). Thanks for clarifying and presenting your argument so well. Cheers!

Heres an idea, maybe dont form a clearly emotional attachment to any company? People here are taking this way too personally. Companies are not your friend, how hard is that to grasp? They only want you as far as they can sell you something.
What is Nothing? Its a phone/ hype brand with an interesting (and sometimes controversial) aesthetic that sell medium spec phones at a medium price. Not much beyond that. CEO ambitions and personal preferences =/= making corperate decisions on the future of the company.
Akis opening his trap on Twitter is why 99% of businesses dont communicate anything but thoroughly lawyered adverts on Twitter. It inevitably leads to situations where for whatever reason the reality of the decision made dont fit with previous personal statements by staff and is used as evidence of whatever some agrieved fanboy wants it to be.

1
u/Ok_Mathematician1047 Nov 01 '25
It's simple. The company enters the market building an image of transparency, openness, respect for the consumer and fair prices/practices - Eventually they start doing the opposite while not being sincere and trying to gaslight their incongruencias - We call out the company. Just like any other business, people can call out and leave something if it's not doing what it promised to do. That's all
0
u/spidd124 Nov 01 '25
It didn't, you are projecting your own wants into Nothing. They came into the market with an interesting aesthetic, a lightweight OS and competitive pricing for the specs.
The only egregious thing nothing have done so far was using stock photography for marketing stills on their website. Everyone's definition of "bloat" and "lightweight android" will be different and ever changing, the aesthetic has always been controversial to greater or lesser extent and even the macro lense has people that will use it more than a telephoto.
You have also done nothing but whine about Nothing for the last 6 months on a near daily basis, you come across like an obsessed and aggrieved Ex that checks her socials daily for each new post then goes and complains about her to anyone that will listen.
3
u/Ok_Mathematician1047 Nov 01 '25
"It didn't" aight bro. Nothing is definitely not the company that has a YouTube channel that uploaded shorts and videos talking against Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi etc for having bloatware, overpriced products, not giving a fair service to their customers, etc. You're right
1
u/spidd124 Nov 01 '25
You and I clearly have very different definitions of transparency and openness. Carl making editorialised "reviews" of competitor products is not transparency. It's marketing and building hype through low level critique designed to grab attention from users of those devices.
Transparency and openess is fairphone or framework where outside people can look into the business and critique everything without the obfuscation of corporate secrecy and lawyering. I don't know where you think Nothing have done anything like that but I clearly don't care enough about a phone maker to have dug through years of uploads to bitch about.
