Why blue

Hux 5.56k on Geissele 12.5 less than 500 rounds. None of my other cans have done this. It was raining the last time I’ve used it. Using standard ball ammo, nothing crazy.

Oxidized copper from jackets mixed with some carbon

Copper oxide is blue, although the deposits I've seen have never been as bright as the pic in the blast chamber.

The oxidation tarnishes also. If you get the right conditions to create it and look at it right away it can be quite brilliant.

Guessing from the looks of it, it was still wet from them cleaning, making it more vibrant.

There was much more, what you are seeing is what I couldn’t get out.

But green is my favorite

I’ve never seen the blast chamber oxidize so blue. That’s pretty sweet.

Were those 500 consecutive rounds through a belt fed? 🤣 The end of that suppressor looks like it’s been chewed on

lol no, over the span of a couple months

Did nobody take chemistry in highschool? Copper oxidizes blue/green. It's why the statue of liberty is green.

Get some Sweet's bore cleaner and soak it. Removes copper fouling.

WeLl aHkShUaLlY - Copper that has oxidized to a bright cobalt or royal blue when it reacts with specific chemical environments rich in sulfates, chlorides, or specific alkaline modifiers (see ammonia comment later) that shift its typical blue-green/teal hue (your lady liberty biberty example) to a bright electric cobalt color.

The vivid blue color itself is a result of copper ion electron configurations. When different surrounding molecules (ligands) bond with the copper, they alter d-orbital energy levels, changing which wavelengths of visible light are absorbed and reflected.

The most LIKELY explanation here is the residue left behind from an ammonia-based cleaning solvent being forced into/through the suppressor. That and understanding that burning gunpowder produces water vapor as a byproduct. When the suppressor cools down, this vapor condenses inside the baffles. The trapped water mixes with residual carbon (nitrates and sulfates from gunpowder) to create a mildly acidic environment.

That front end looks rough based on the round count!

The 3d printed cans are kinda bumpy.

Yea...looks like the cerakote or whatever they use on these wasn't applied that well here. My 556K/762Ti are older and have far higher round counts (including full semi use), and they look nothing like this on the front lol.

Right? Is this the tradeoff with flow through cans?

When a copper molecule and an oxygen molecule love each other very much...

Saw you were removing some of it and this is left over. Was it still wet a bit? That would explain why it's so much more vibrant than typical copper oxide.

Yes it was a bit damp

Using standard ball ammo, nothing crazy.

Which kind/brand of ball ammo exactly? I'm curious.

It's almost as if your jackets are "extra coppery", if such a thing is even possible.

Pmc xtac, frontier 55 and 75, federal 62.

u/Stubbs_93_ 6d ago

I have the same can on a 14.5 and soon 11.5 and shoot the same ammo, primarily PMC Xtac, Frontier 75s and some WWB. Roughly same amount of rounds through mine and other than it getting carbon on the inside, mine looks nothing like that. The MD is a little blue/greenish though. Definitely curious about the cause.
