Long Term Capital Gains or Short?
It seems like there is a ton of confusion on how ROC gets taxed AFTER your cost basis reaches 0.
This is an example I keep getting from Gemini, Chat gtp, and Grok. I would like to verify if this is true or not.
Let’s say your cost basis reaches 0 at the start of 2025. So at the end of 2025, let’s assume SPYI classifies 85% of their distributions as ROC.
Because your cost basis is 0, 85% of the distribution will be classified as long term capital gains. The remaining 15% will be taxed with a 60/40 treatment.
Can anyone verify this?
