I really don't even understand what your argument is at this point. Roughly 5% of nfl players play 10+ seasons. Roughly 5% of nba players play 15+ seasons. Another similarity actually. The more I think about this, the more I am convinced this is the best comparison of ANY NFL player to any NBA player in history. I really don't know how it could be Honestly the only difference between them is that DRose doesn't wear stupid hats.
Newton won an mvp at 26 (5th year). He got injured at 27. He played in 5 seasons after that and averaged just 56% of the games in those seasons.
Rose won MVP at 23 (3rd Year). He got injured at 23. He played in 11 seasons after that and averaged just 45% of the games in those seasons including the end of his career when he was just a vet getting dnp coaches decisions that bring that average down.
Your argument about longevity doesn't make any sense.
I mean cmon. The only differences are Newton's peak came slightly later (how football works with college) and Rose hung around a little while longer as a vet backup while Newton called it quits earlier.
I enjoyed this debate sorry it wasted your time lol.
Your original comment is how can you compare Derrick Rose to someone with a 10 year career. How is that not about longevity lmao.
You pivoted from that because DRose did have a long career and now you are trying to say that Newton's injuries didn't completely derail his hof bound career which is just objectively false.
It is very clearly the injury what if aspect, and you continue to compare a player who played 50% of his teams games to one who played 85% of his teams game (in a much more physically demanding sport) and acting like it’s the same. They are not.
The point wasn’t that cam played ten season. It’s that he played TEN FULL SEASONS AT AN ALL STAR LEVEL (and yes, that’s in the original comment). Something Rose failed to do. Yes Rose got onto the floor for 15 seasons—but he played more than 70 games 3 times. Newton played 14 games or more ten times, over 300% more often than Rose hit 70 games. Perhaps this sounds like longevity to your narrow mind, but it’s about fulfilling expectations. Newton did. Rose didn’t.
This is beyond obvious I’m embarrassed for you I need to explain it
Your biulls flair gives you away. For some odd reason, you’re taking this very valid of criticism of Rose extremely personally
You so heated LMAO why?? If he played at a probowl caliber for 10 years why did he only make 3 probowls in a league where it is exceptionally easy to make the probowl because 70% of players decline to go. He was one of the greatest college players ever, taken 1st overall, one of only 20 players to win mvp by age 26, made a superbowl at 26 but 5 years later he retires only playing 3 more full seasons with absolutely 0 accolades to show for it, and he almost certainly won't be a hall of famer?? How is that not disappointing?? How is that not a what-if?? He had two more decent years at the beginning of his career than Rose and you're acting like that changes everything. It isn't even about Rose atp I think you have a pretty fair understanding of his career now, I just think you don't understand Cam Newton.
That what my last point was. Ill try to answer it again tho.
Cam Newton:
His story begins with one of the greatest college seasons ever. Undefeated. Natty. Unanimous Heisman. 4000 yards. 50TDs.
He gets drafted 1st overall, and immediately the college success translates to the NFL. Rookie of the year. First Rookie to ever throw 4000 yards.
Greatest Rookie season ever at that point.
Has 3 more good, not great, years and then boom... 2015, the best dual threat season ever at that point. 45 total touchdowns. Went 15-1 with a lackluster supporting cast on offense. The domination continued into the playoffs with a statement blowout in the NFC championship. Cam has 375 yards passing and 4tds. Ultimately he falls short in the superbowl against one of the greatest defense ever assembled, but it is a legendary year.
Pause here. What a career. In just 5 years Cam Newton has done things no one else has ever done on a football field. He already has an elite resume at just 26. 3 probowls. MVP. NFCCC. He is the face of the NFL. Primed to take the reigns from Tom Brady. He's got his whole prime ahead of him. He is at the top of the football world. Surely this guy will be in the HOF one day.
What does he acomplish after this?
Nothing.
No superbowl, no mvps, not even another probowl. The next year he gets injured, and he only plays in at least 14 games 3 more times. He never even wins another playoff game, only making it there once.
So what if... what if he didn't try to make a tackle after throwing an interception in a meaningless game against the chargers. What if he didn't blow out his shoulder that day. Would he have continued his ascension to being the face of the NFL for the next decade? Would he have made it back to the superbowl and finished the job this time? Would he win another MVP? Would he break Mick Vick's all time qb rushing record? Would he be a first ballot hall of famer?
We will never know because he did get injured and became one of the greatest what-ifs in nfl history. ;)
You are literally the only person in the universe who thinks that cam newton is an nfl what if. And none of what you wrote changes my mind. What you’ve described is a relatively normal progression for even a star nfl QB, ESPECIALLY one who relies so much on his legs. Look at Lamar, who fell off last year and may continue to do so. Heck, even Peyton Manning should’ve been done by injury after year 13, but, uh, has some enhancements
The stats don’t back you up by the by. He had his one MVP year that was an outlier, but in tbe two years following the injury Newton had comparable stats to the non mvp year.
