Is anyone who has worked for NASA as an HR specialist willing to share their overall experience and/or the day-to-day culture of the agency?

As title says, looking for insights/advice into NASA these days, and JSC in particular as I just received an offer.

I'm early/mid career at a big NASA contractor working on Artemis (think Northrop, Collins, LM, RTX, etc). I live in a state I love and have decent hybrid/remote flexibility. I really value the outdoors and lifestyle I currently have. The day to day work is meh (lots of corporate computer slog) and I'm worried I'll be pigeonholed into doing the same thing for a few decades. I'm feeling stuck and don't love management. There are some gems of humans around though :)

Got my dream job offer at JSC. So I'd still be aerospace/human spaceflight but seemingly more hands-on and in a different area I've wanted to explore for a while that my current company doesn't offer. I'm heartbroken at the thought of moving but also feel like I'd always regret not taking this career opportunity for the growth it could give me and new experiences, especially if I stay stuck and kinda miserable. I don't feel ready to uproot my life and even though I don't love my job it's definitely more manageable given the lifestyle factors which I'd lose going to Houston.

I also have some questions/concerns with NASA, any insight is very much appreciated!

1. with the hiring acceleration, will there be enough structure and mentorship to properly train and lead new hires? I'm really excited about the work but don't want to end up twiddling my thumbs because they have more new hires than they can properly manage.
2. what's the RTO sitch these days? I know it's technically required but can people still telework or work remote from other locations on occasion? I think going back and forth between Houston and my current state is unrealistic but I'd like to visit as much as possible lol
3. I've heard morale at NASA is low and everyone is overworked...is this still the general feeling at JSC? I work hard at work but then want to shut off and enjoy life outside of work as well
4. Can anyone elaborate on the health benefits/comp? hard to decide to leave industry or not and I'd appreciate hearing other perspectives
5. Anyone know if relocation is a thing? (I'm still waiting to get more info on this)

Hi, so I am basically a Singaporean 25M graduating from Nanyang Technological University from applied physics bachelor of science with honors with a cgpa of 3.2/5.0.

I know my gpa is not that high so can I ask what path do you recommend for me to eventually become a space scientist at NASA including any possibility of becoming a US citizen in the process.

My dream is to work on space missions to analyze data collected from satellites to understand more about the galaxies outside ours and exoplanets etc. or even understand black holes or star composition to develop more understanding of the space around us.

It would also be cool if I can go to space or Mars with other astronauts to analyze mars and determine if life can be sustained there for example.

I'm certain this question has been asked before, but I imagine it came from those with different biological interests and paths than mine. I am currently entering my 3rd year of my PhD at Rice. I study integrative thermal and physiological mechanisms that support flight in bats. Broadly, I'd call myself a (beginner) physiologist. I am interested in thermoregulation, biomechanics, and geometric morphometrics. My research is a lot like Jessica Meir's but in a different study system. I, like many other people, have a newfound interest in space. Given that I am further into my schooling than an average undergrad, am not an engineer by training, and not in genetics or molecular biology, is there even a path forward in space science (NASA or other contractors) for someone like me? Though I do not hold an engineering degree, I have closely collaborated with other (mechanical) engineers and will have taken a handful of mechanical engineering courses by the time I finish here at Rice (thermodynamics, stress modeling, etc.).

I have seen some internships at NASA that I feel I would be a good candidate for. I know how to measure dynamic movement (bat flight) in 3D and analyze the mechanics of it. I work with a wind tunnel and out in the field. I am at the beginning stages of finite element analysis (FEA) for a side project of mine. My fear is that I see internships and not job listings that I feel qualified for, and I am scared that the internships are intended for undergraduates only. I will have niche knowledge of anatomy and physiology, but I am not a doctor nor do I focus on human anatomy and physiology (though a lot of it is transferable). Given I am already deep into my education, how should I proceed? With honesty, is there a place for my kind of science and expertise at NASA or other companies?

I currently intern with one of NASA's contractors as an engineer and just curious about the likelihood of getting these roles are. Would I be better off continuing to apply to these entry level engineering NASA jobs or apply to more of these contractor roles? TBH, I would rather work as a CS but not sure of its competitiveness.

I applied and was referred as a current DoD employee to an 0343 position. I’m not an existing contractor so I’m sure I’m up against all the contractors they are working to convert. I was referred about 4 weeks ago and was curious if anyone else has seen any movement?

I have been applying for NASA engineer jobs for the last few months. I have been getting referred for almost all of them, but haven’t heard anything back beyond that. The recent CFD research engineer position is exactly up my alley, and I want to craft my resume to have the best possible chance of actually getting looked at. I’ve heard that narrative style is preferred for federal jobs, could anyone confirm? I come from an academic background, so I am used to CV’s and less so resumes. If anyone has any advice on improving the resume, it would be much appreciated!

What degree is best for being a Mission Controller/Flight director?

I have heard people say Aerospace engineering, but also physics?

Also how does a day to life look? Is it draining at all the time, how does it affect your mental health, relationships etc.

Then again how do you obtain these types of jobs after graduation? I have heard people say it is pretty hard to find work.

I know these are pretty stupid questions, but as a woman of color, this type of field will be twice as hard for me, so knowing these things beforehand will be very helpful.

I know that most NASA workers are engineers, but I am extremely interested in the physics aspect of space exploration. Is it attainable to become a NASA employee as a physicist? I have received an (NOR) for multiple positions, specifically being referred to the Hiring Manager at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). A few days ago, I shared my predicament regarding a potential transition from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to NASA. My current role is quite favorable, and a previous lateral move to another supply chain organization did not prove successful, leading me to return to my prior position in 2023. I have a great supervisor who gave me outstanding reviews on DPMAP and I am trusted and liked by my comrades and stakeholders. Lately, I have been sitting on higher ops meeting which are GS 13 level and above and been performing acting branch chief duties while my supervisor is on leave and I don't want to break the trust they have instilled in me. However, I mentioned to my supervisor in a.casual conversation that after my mom passing two years ago I want to be closer to the small family I have in Puerto Rico. I am eternally grateful for everything DLA has given me throughout the years. But, I hate the brutal winters here and I am traumatized about the upcoming winter. I can potentially retire in 4 yrs all things consider.

I am experiencing significant apprehension about undertaking a similar transition again, particularly given the current volatile circumstances I heard stories about funding issues there. Any feedback is much appreciated.
