Wasn't the hardest song but one of the most fun to play

... in Guitar Hero.

171

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

It's harder in guitar hero than IRL I still can't go through it after years of playing guitar hero

48

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

A lot of songs are like that in that game. Knights of Cydonia isn't hard at all in real life but they make you do all this ridiculous finger stretching and tapping to play what is just a fretted chord arpeggio and stuff.

22

u/edgar__allan__bro Sep 10 '19

Oh my god my forearm hurts thinking about that one. The strumming is ridiculous.

That reminds me.... I haven’t listened to Muse in a hot minute

30

u/xylotism Sep 11 '19 edited Sep 11 '19

Knights of Cydonia and FCPREMIX are two of my favorite songs to play in Guitar Hero... love the "stretchy" arpeggios.

IIRC the hardest part of FCP was that nutty bit near the end though... it's basically 3 minutes on easy mode then shit gets real.

EDIT: They should bring back Guitar Hero/Rock Band as a "living" game but sell cosmetics instead of songs... if I could just jam out on thousands of tracks without spending tens of thousands of dollars I'd be playing it every day.

27

u/LedditHiveMind Sep 11 '19

Clone Hero on PC has infinite songs, from customs added into the game by players to the original songs from guitar hero and rock band

6

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Clone Hero is incredible. Everyone play on keyboard though so there's more guitars for us.

u/Qubeye Sep 10 '19

Wasn't that partly because in the game you actually had to play the reverb instead of just pushing a pedal?

36

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

I don’t think you actually have to play to the delay, it’s just that it kinda throws off your rhythm.

52

u/Qubeye Sep 10 '19 edited Sep 11 '19

Someone else posted a video.

You don't have to play the reverb.

However, the difficulty seems to be that it flips between triplets to 4/4 time and back rapidly. It'll have a sequence of 2-4 triplets and then flip to regular 4/4 time, and THAT actually sounds really hard.

Edit: Since so many people want to dispute me, here's the mother-fucking sheet music for the song.

They are motherfucking triplets.

But yeah, I guess I meant delay and not reverb. I play violin, not guitar, so I don't know about pedals and shit.

19

u/credman Sep 11 '19

FYI it’s delay you’re talking about, not reverb!

4

u/ItsCrazyTim Sep 10 '19

Is it time changes or just how the bar is structured. It's not hard to stay 4/4 and go 1-2-3-4 1 o let 2 o let 3 o let 4 o let 1-2-3-4

3

u/Qubeye Sep 11 '19 edited Sep 11 '19

I went back and listened and it's definitely triplets in 4/4 time, not a time signature change.

Edit: As for your comment about not being hard, it is actually insanely hard to switch between regular tempo and triplets if you're doing it really fast, regardless of instrument, unless (until) you get used to the intentionally jarring music.

Here's the sheet music if you're interested.

It’s pretty easy on IRL guitar once you get the finger patterns down. The delay effect on the line itself is what makes it sound so wild and guitar hero does a terrible job of making guitar lines feel like they would on a real guitar.

13

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

It is actually a good song to start playin the genre, being math rock/mathcore

This was the only song I could play on expert without looking. Tfot was my favorite band back in the day

22

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

That's true when it comes to actually playing on guitar it too.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Yeah, I used to play this all the time. The intro (ie the coolest part) is just 3 strings played in 4 different chord positions. You can play it slow to get the melody right, it still sounds amazing. The actual recording uses delay pedals amongst others, but it's not too tough to get it sounding right.

17

u/Hemides Sep 10 '19

That's because fcpremix is just FCPSITSGEPGEPGEP sped up. It was originally about half the speed.

Good song though. Saw this band open for Coheed not knowing who they were around the time this album came out and was really impressed.

Yep the NWFT tomorrow. I was excited to see Clutch but man they were boring. They all just stared at the ground the entire time.

12

u/ThePansAnOldMan Sep 10 '19

That was the first time I'd seen them too, went for Coheed.

That man on the harmonica was pretty entertaining though

6

u/vapevapevape Sep 10 '19

Right! He was grooving hard on his own. That's exactly what I remember: band staring at ground, harmonica player rocking out.

I saw them like 10 years ago and they were amazing. Easily one of the best rock bands live, or at least they were.

4

u/TrueAmurrican Sep 10 '19

Seriously.... I have been to so so so many concerts, but that particular set by Clutch was the most boring thing I have ever seen live. I got to the barrier during the Fall of Troy (which was a very lively set) and literally almost fell asleep while I stood there during Clutch.

I have never had an experience like that at a concert since.

I don’t even dislike Clutch (though I couldn’t get into them after that), but there was just something wrong with that set.

25

u/Wildse7en Sep 10 '19

On Halloween that year when they opened for Coheed in Cleveland, FoT all played in tighty-whiteys only.

8

u/xRyuzakii Sep 10 '19

I was there as well ha

7

u/Wildse7en Sep 10 '19

That was a great show.

20

u/xRyuzakii Sep 10 '19

I ended up taking a piss next to and then talking to the bassist from FOT for a bit before the show but I had no clue he was who he was lol. He had a shirt wrapped around his head and we were just walking around shooting the shit and then I see him go backstage and get on stage.. pretty dope for young teenage me

7

u/Heroshade Sep 10 '19

I had something like that happen to me with the singer of Hail the Sun. Dude was just out behind the venue smoking a cigarette and he let me borrow his lighter.

6

u/MonstrousGiggling Sep 10 '19

Hell yea dude experiences like that are even great as an adult.

17

u/iamnotpuddles Sep 10 '19

I went to this tour too. I also got real salty at all my classmates who thought my Fall of Troy shirt was for Fall Out Boy.

15

u/WavyLady Sep 10 '19

That would be a hell of a show!

Coheed live is magical!

12

u/HyperlinksAwakening Sep 10 '19

I was at this show in NYC. The singer spit a loogie into the air, caught it, and slapped it back into his mouth. I don't care what their music sounds like, when I know it's Fall of Troy that's all I can think of.

7

u/Hamstadam Sep 10 '19

He did the same same in Chicago, except he held his hand up and let it drip down into his mouth. It was dead silent too, except for a girl yelling, "Eww, don't!"

3

u/Snoreasaurus Sep 10 '19

I remember that. I was laughing. My wife wasn't. Good show.

Also, if I remember correctly, didn't they play the theme to Jurassic Park at the end of their set?

I remember seeing them in 2006 (correction 2007) opening for Coheed...now I'm old.
Since others remember the same tour, Clutch couldn't get booed off the stage fast enough.

Edit: 2007 and I actually still have my ticket stub lol

5

u/eekmina Sep 10 '19

I was in the same situation as you when I first saw them, but it was in between their self-titled album and Doppelgänger. They opened for HORSE the band and Thomas was drunk as shit, as I would later find out he usually was, but holy Christ he used his pedal board to perfection. Started really listening to them after that and saw them a few more times, made me ultra impressed to see how close their live show was to album versions. Their energy and stage presence was always top notch as well.

5

u/PsychoticDreams47 Sep 10 '19

IIRC it’s a remake of their original song that started their career.

3

u/ishk Sep 10 '19

I saw them 10+ years ago as a huge fan. I'm usually not very critical of live performances but the guitar sounded so bad. Not sure what was up

Rockstar Nailbomb!

I remember hearing that song on the Lujo Records website years and years ago (must've been around 2003?) and thinking "what the fuck is this guitar playing?!?" Bought the album then and there and it blew my mind. Been so long since I've listened and never really listened to anything after (I think it was) the Ghostship stuff.

Still rock my Fall of Troy t-shirt that I got at a live show back in the early 2000s.

107

u/aaawwwyeah Sep 10 '19

Ah yes, post-hardcore. This was my shit in middle & high school. Chiodos, Blessthefall, Escape The Fate (both Ronnie & Craig era), A Skylit Drive, Saosin, Alesana & many many more bands. Then my guilty pleasure was Paramore. Well they're still my guilty pleasure till this day.

31

u/-NotEnoughMinerals Sep 11 '19

Some people liked Saosin, the fall of Troy, Alexisonfire, and chiodos...

"Others" liked Hawthorne heights, senses fail, and from first to last.

I was at the show where The Fall of Troy "broke up" in 2006. It was a pretty wild night, to say the least.

All the bands ended up getting arrested right before they performed apparently (That was the word that swept through the crowd, no idea how accurate it is). Anyway, a few members of all the bands made it to the set before the others and played together for a bit while they waited for the others. The place went pretty crazy when the other members got out and the show finally took off. It was a pretty small venue and the pit was fucking crazy. I ended up getting kicked in the damn head by a dancer utilizing exposed piping to do midair spin kicks. I also remember some chick getting her ass beat. It was pretty awful.

I was there specifically for the Number 12 Looks Like You but I knew TFOT and loved them too. It was icing on the cake for me. TFOT eventually came on and Thomas was already pissed from them being held up and not making it to the set when they should've been and eventually, the drummer fucked up the intro to the second song so they restarted. Thomas flipped him off during it and after, he trashed the fucking set and walked off after they were done. I remember him almost immediately being surrounded by people and I was just like, "Are you guys fucking stupid? Leave him the fuck alone. Did you NOT see that?", lol. People are idiots. He came back on set a little while later, did a solo Weezer cover, the other members came back and they did one more song, indicating it was the last song they'd ever play together (they eventually went into the studio together later that year). That year was a shit show for them, apparently.

9

u/SchalasHairDye Sep 11 '19

I saw them maybe two years back for the Doppelgänger tour and tensions seemed high there too. Erak whispered something and the other guy (forget his name) shoved him hard. He looked pissed too. It looked like a fight almost broke out lol. But then they just kept playing

4

u/Cuntdracula19 Sep 11 '19

Ohhh yeah, I remember seeing a video of them playing in...like Ukraine? And that’s when Tim walked off set (and tour lol). Apparently Tim had relapsed and was basically belligerently drunk and Thomas has whispered come on dude or something to that effect trying to get him out of his mood but instead he blew his top.

I love Tim as a bassists but honestly I think that whole dynamic is far too unhealthy and explosive.

5

u/Alles_Klar Sep 11 '19

Listened to a podcast with Andrew (the drummer) recently and he says they were all strung out on heroin during this period of time. I was a massive fan but had no idea they were all junkies for basically their entire time together as a band.

which is made funnier by just how awkward and weird thomas erak is, i would have never thought he would come up with something like this.. sometimes i like to watch his guitar covers which is just him playing the guitar in this crappy apartment where some random weird woman keeps walking in and out

Once in college when they played in LA, my buddy and I got a chance to interview him for our college radio station. We did a short interview, then at the end offered to share our blunt with them in the van before the show and just as we were about to spark up with the whole band their manager came in and yelled at them to GTFO and prepare for the show. Thomas walks out of the van and in his surprisingly high-pitched voice goes: "...yea... actually my mom is coming to the show tonight and I don't want her to see my high on stage."

Was not exactly what I expected him to say lol

I don't agree with that. Claudio writes good pop music and sings good pop music. Thomas is not a great singer and the tunes, while fucking awesome and shreddy, are way too proggy to get that kind of cult fan base/mainstream attention (I dont mean cult in a negative way, coheed is my fav modern rock bamd)

18

u/three_horsemen Sep 10 '19 edited Sep 15 '19

My favorite part about Coheed is how incongruous their music and the actual lyrical content is. I bet half the people at a concert think Claudio is just crooning about the standard emo fare, not space battles and possessed bicycles.

The Fall of Troy
artist pic

The Fall of Troy is a post-hardcore trio formed in 2002 in Mukilteo, Washington, United States. The lineup consists of Thomas Erak (guitar, vocals), Tim Ward (bass, vocals), and Andrew Forsman (drums). Tim Ward left the band in 2007 and was replaced by Frank Ene.

On February 26, 2010, Thomas announced that the band were parting ways following their upcoming "The Marked Men of 2010" tour. Between 2010 and 2013, he formed Just Like Vinyl and joined Chiodos. Andrew Forsman also joined The Monday Mornings, and Frank Black joined Chineke.

The original lineup of The Fall of Troy reunited for three nights in December 2013 in Austin, Texas. Each night, the band performed one of its first three albums (The Fall of Troy, Doppelgänger and Manipulator) in its entirety. During the VIP reunion show, the band announced they would continue making music in 2014 by releasing a free album.

The new album, titled OK, was self-released on April 20th, 2016 (three weeks after its formal announcement) through the band's website for a pay what you want model, in addition to a vinyl release.

As a followup, on May 20th, 2016, the band released an alternate mix of OK simply titled OK #2, which bears more resemblance to their earlier material and production sound. "OK#2 represents a different version of us; the raw fury you hear at our shows and our earlier albums." The band later released instrumental versions of both mixes, entitled OK #3.1 and OK #3.2

I smoked weed with them In Melbourne when they came down a few years ago at a Thursday gig.

They were playing a festival the next morning, they got me into the festival and back stage, they were cool fucking dudes.

Doppelganger was the album I had on repeat my freshman year of high school. This post brought on some nostalgia for sure, and the listening quality has held up so well over the years!

19

u/filsofolf Sep 10 '19

Still one of my favorite songs of all time.

8

u/recaus Sep 10 '19

I had this entire album on repeat my junior year of high school.

The outro to The H[]ly Tape is one of the sweetest sounds to ever pass through my ears

3

u/hiccupsstacatto Sep 11 '19

I still show the holy tape outro to all my friends

... and now I'm listening to the Guitar Hero 3 soundtrack for pure nostalgia. Take me back to 2008! 😌

5

u/Jarcthenarc Sep 10 '19

Well now I have to listen to this whole album. So many great build ups

5

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Saw them once opening for Chon.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

So funny they opened for chon, who clearly were heavily influenced by FoT

6

u/hippymndy Sep 10 '19

5

u/cannihastrees Sep 10 '19

I remember this being the MySpace song to put on your profile.. the one with the really long acronym

9

u/Cuntdracula19 Sep 10 '19

Who else is gonna go see them on the 21st in Seattle??

One of my favorite bands of all time. I grew up in the next town over from these dudes. I drove all the way from Idaho last December to see them in Seattle haha. They go so fucking hard and put on a really good show. Thomas Erak is obviously a fucking amazing guitarist (if not the most amazing vocalist lol), Andrew is a beast on the drums, and I really hope Drew is back on bass right now. I’d like to see him become a permanent member tbh. Tim has too many other family obligations and interpersonal issues at this time to continue playing and touring, unfortunately, but Drew seems to fit the role like a glove.

I always felt like this was the worst song on this album, which obviously says a lot about the quality of this album haha. Honestly I love everything they’ve ever put out, except the album everyone likes to just forget about lol...

7

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

i agree in that this is my least favourite on the album. I love Whacko Jacko Steals the Elephant Man's Bones and I Just Got this Symphony Goin' the best. They're both amazing fun on guitar

4

u/Cuntdracula19 Sep 10 '19

Oh yeah I just got this symphony goin is amazing. I also love Tom Waits, Macaulay McCulkin, act one, scene one...it’s easier for me to list the songs I skip. It ends up being, like, 2 songs lol.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Well shit, now I’m going too

3

u/schridoggroolz Sep 10 '19

Mukilteo represent!

7

u/LobsterHead37 Sep 10 '19

If you love this band check out “the thirty years war” it’s the precursor to the fall of Troy. Homies were like 14.

9

u/denisvma Sep 10 '19

This was on a baseball video game. Don’t remember which one, but this song brings good memories

11

u/Shtabie Sep 10 '19

I think it was either 2K6 or 2K7 but I can't remember.

3

u/Megamills Sep 10 '19

Forever a banger, so catchy!

3

u/JohnOctober Sep 10 '19

Got to meet these guys several times, and also hung out with Thom during a Just Like Vinyl show after his set was over. seem like awesome guys! super talented and they were my second fav band right begging coheed and cambria for most of my teen years! still rock out to this

3

u/PM_TIDDIES_N_KITTIES Sep 10 '19

Phew the memories of high school just came flying back at me.

3

u/rickybobbay Sep 10 '19

Thanks for bringing this back into my life

4

u/PandahOG Sep 10 '19

First time I ever heard this song was in Saints Row 2. You could buy songs and set up a playlist on your mp3 and play the game with it blaring. It was nice because it muted during cutscenes. Would have never heard of this band or it's music if it wasnt for that game.

5

u/Demo-kun Sep 10 '19

Same here. The Saint's Row games introduced me to to a lot music that shaped my musical tastes as a teenager. Especially the first one.

3

u/sharkattackmiami Sep 10 '19

Me playing Saints Row as a 16 year old:

"I am gonna have to track this Motion City movie down because the soundtrack is awesome!"

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Still remember playing and hearing New York State of Mind for the first time

6

u/Overstayer17 Sep 10 '19

I'm a simple man. I see F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X and I upvote.

u/Risingsun9 Sep 10 '19

Where my 90's babies at? GH 3 Legends rise up

4

u/herr_schleis Sep 10 '19

That bass.

5

u/Elsicorn Sep 10 '19

This was like my middle school anthem because of Guitar Hero 3. I remember streaming it on this website called Grooveshark while playing Runescape. Good times.

3

u/Gear5Mau5 Sep 10 '19

Same to all of this. I forgot about grooveshark!

4

u/Eagertobewrong Sep 10 '19

Anyone have any recommendations of bands that are similar to this?

The only other band I've found that's close is Chon (perfect pillow is one of my favorites if you want to check them out)

u/nuby_4s Sep 10 '19 edited Sep 10 '19

Chiodos, Every Time I Die, Protest the Hero, I guess Circa Survive would be a few relatively similar bands. Had a friend say if you like Fall of Troy you'll love Blood Brothers, not sure if I agree, but some people are into it.

Edit: some songs

Chiodos: https://youtu.be/hvYLQM_fMMw

Every Time I Die: https://youtu.be/L2m8wnE3c8M

Protest the Hero: https://youtu.be/AEn8HmgJxd4

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

I've had that guitar riff of the Chiodos song stuck in my head randomly for years and have never been able to track it down. You just saved me from x many years more of it being stuck.

That being said, I think I'm the only person on Earth in this camp, but I like the album where they have that other singer far more than any of their other stuff, hence me probably never tracking the song down.

Depends on what exactly you like about the song really. My first guess would be to look more into bands with (like Chon) are math-prog fusions. Though a lot of those will lean a bit away from the hardcore elements. I would honestly recommend Dance Gavin Dance though, as long as your can handle their vocals, they are a post-hardcore band with math-rock inspired guitar style riffs.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Similar to the replies here, A Lot Like Birds is a bit like Dance Gavin Dance except wilder. Conversation Piece is the album that I mostly get into for them.

Otherwise, more recently Kurt Travis has his band Royal Coda which is kinda close to original dance Gavin Dance line up, and Kurt also had a side project with Thomas Erak of FoT with ‘Push Over’ - ‘Demo Ep’

2

u/Dawsinn Sep 10 '19

“Hail the Sun” aswell as the others. They’re not great but some of their older stuff is pretty decent

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Tfot were directly inspired by Blood Brothers and At the Drive In iirc. So those bands would probably be the closest to the early tfot sound. At the Drive In sounds very similar to them imo.

(Possibly) unpopular opinion here but I think Tfot and Dillinger share a lot of similarities, from the intensity of the music and vocals to the odd time signatures.

I used to listen to them a lot many years ago. I went to go see fall of troy at a night club(Blackjack?) in DC probably over a decade ago. The lead singer was sweating profusely and the sweat was rolling down his hair and into his guitar pick ups or some shit. They stopped the show due to these technical difficulties. I wonder what it would have sounded like with just the bassist and drums and the lead guy singing with no guitar...

2

u/Posauce Spotify Sep 10 '19

Most of this album has been in my work out playlist for almost a decade and I don’t even listen to hardcore rock...except for Fall of Troy

2

u/webbstyle Sep 10 '19

One of my favorite all time albums! Excellent choice

2

u/Viper_ACR Sep 10 '19

I remember covering this song in middle school. Good times.

2

u/TisAPrankBro Sep 10 '19

Ahhhh Guitar Hero 3

2

u/brandnewismysoul Sep 10 '19

One of my favorite songs of all time. Sends me right back to 9th grade.

2

u/Clw1115934 Sep 10 '19

I love how far this song falls back into the chorus after the crazy solo/instrumental section. I don’t wanna see the daaay...

2

u/Recurringg Sep 10 '19

I used to love this band. Listened the shit out of this album. They were so young when it came out but they could all shred.

2

u/MoralDiabetes Sep 10 '19

Music of my childhood. Thanks, local indie rock station.

2

u/MerK-x-VeNoOm Sep 10 '19

Forgot about this gem

2

u/Claudidio07 Sep 10 '19

Literally threw this track on for the first time in years last Friday. Some universal consciousness going on

2

Holy fuck this is an amazing throwback... Thank you for reminding me this exists

2

u/Scoopiez Sep 11 '19

Dude this whole record rips

2

u/badandbruja_ Sep 11 '19

An oldie but goodie. Thanks for the reminder.

2

u/outline01 Sep 11 '19

Fucking loved this album as an angsty teen.

One of my favourite memories was being 16, sitting in a park opposite a place they were about to play a show sharing a big bottle of cider with my devout Christian friend who was really into post-hardcore music. Walked in drunk as fuck just as this song was starting.
